General Information Although gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and rats belong to the rodent family, each species has its own particular habits and specific needs.
Choosing a Cage Choosing the proper cage will not only increase your enjoyment of the animal but also play an important role in its health. Ask your pet supplies dealer to recommend the type of cage to use, and tell you how to set it up and equip it with the proper accessories. The pet store owner can also recommend a variety of natural, non-toxic, absorbent shavings and other bedding and nesting materials for small animals. Placement of the cage is important. Since rodents are highly susceptible to chilling and overheating, keep the cage in a well-ventilated room but away from drafts, air conditioning vents, radiators, or windows that are hit by direct sunlight. You should also ensure that other pets, specifically cats or dogs, cannot jab their paws or noses in the cage or otherwise gain access it. Return to Top Cleaning the Cage It is extremely important to keep the cage hygienically clean because rodent urine is not only unpleasant smelling but also, and more importantly, a primary source of allergens. Although rodents are naturally clean in the wild, when they are confined to a cage, urine and fecal matter accumulate quickly and cause a strong odor. In addition, certain rodents, particularly males that have matured sexually, emit a strong-smelling odor from their scent glands.

  • Keep your cat inside. If left outdoors cats are at risk of getting lost, being stolen, injured or even killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to fatal infectious diseases, including rabies.
  • During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes choose to sleep under the hoods of cars , where it is warmer. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed in the fan belt. Before starting the engine, bang loudly on the car hood for a few seconds to give a cat a chance to escape.
  • Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice , especially during a snowstorm. Dogs frequently lose their scent in snow and ice and can easily become lost or disoriented. They may also panic in a snowstorm and run away. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season.
  • Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when the animal comes in out of the rain, snow or ice. Salt, antifreeze and other chemicals can hurt your dog if ingested (i.e. liking a paw). Also their sensitive paw pads may bleed from the snow or ice encrusted in them.

Human cancer treatment goes to the dogs
Radiation gives dogs a leg up on cancer cure
Introduction
Dogs are living longer these days because of the advances of modern veterinary and human medicine. Longer life is a boon to pet-owning families, but it also brings old age problems to Fido and Fancy. Cancer — the dreaded “Big C” — can be a trade-off for those extra years with a loved companion. The good news is that treatment and cure of animal cancers is proceeding apace: early detection through imaging technology and a range of treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, improved surgical techniques, gene therapy, radioactive beads, and a special diet for the cancer patient are all in the news. Mixed breed dogs are not immune to hereditary cancers; they can suffer from malignant skin tumors if they inherit a faulty brake gene from one parent. Acquired cancers arise when the cell mechanisms are disrupted by a virus (although rare in dogs), by irradiation (skin cancers on dogs with short coats and pale skin exposed to excessive sunlight), or by an accumulation of toxic chemicals, either from failure of a cell to dispose of its waste byproducts or from natural or man-made chemicals in the environment.
