Keeping Birds as Pets There are as many different species of birds as there are reasons to have birds as pets these days. Their beauty, intellect, curiosity and charm, work like winged magnets pulling us in closer to them. No one size fits all. Birds range in size from the small socially active zebra finches to the large and colorful macaws. Some of our companion birds make beautiful music as they sing while others talk and imitate us. Birds have unique personalities and many can even outlive us, living anywhere from 5 to 105 years old. It’s no wonder why so many people like having pet birds. In fact, it has been reported that 1 in 8 households has a pet bird today. Birds make excellent companions. They are true wonders, winged angels, and they bring much joy and happiness into many people’s lives. Birds are the only pet that can speak back to you in a human language, and it is believed that some of these birds even understand what they are saying. Birds also work hard to please you when they try to preen your hair and some may even try to feed you! If you are one of those fortunate people who are thinking about getting a bird, or already have a bird I say good for you! There is another side to this though, the bird’s side. Have you ever stopped to think about what your bird's needs are? What keeps them healthy and happy? Maybe you already know, or sometimes you just think you know. Here are some of my helpful tips, if only to offer you confirmation on what you do know. I hope these tips help you understand some of your birds many needs better. We do not foster out our birds, but we are a sanctuary, offering a permanent home for companion birds that are no longer suitable to be pets. Many of our residents have been abused or neglected. Some are elderly and deserve a 'forever' home. Some will be adopted to the perfect family. We never make a determination on any bird until we know that bird well. But waitwhat about the birds? How could we possibly enjoy traveling with nagging worries about our feathered friends left behind? Maybe we could ask a trusted friend to come in and care for them, but what if the birds stop eating? What if the caregiver forgets something? What if a bird becomes ill while we are away? Maybe that trip was not such a good idea after all. Perhaps we should just stay at home and save the worry and the expense of a bird sitter! There is an enjoyable option bring the birds along! After all, if we have the urge to fly the coop, just imagine how exciting a trip could be for our wild friends who were meant to travel the skies daily! Take to the air or hit the road with your feathered flock and enjoy your trip as well as your birds. Here are a few travel ideas to consider. AIRLINE FLYING Most airlines require a health certificate issued within 10 days before the flight. It is important to make arrangements with the airline well in advance of the departure date. Birds should be listed for the flight at the same time as human passengers. International travel requires much more advance planning than travel within the country. Double check the regulations required for animals to enter and leave a foreign country. It is most important to determine whether regulations require the quarantining of birds in either country. Some countries require up to six months quarantine of pets entering the country.
