    "Harebrained"
Enslaved by Ducks excerpt, June 2004 When Bob Tarte left the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan for the country, he was thinking peace and quiet. He'd write his music reviews in the solitude of his rural home on the outskirts of everything. Then he married Linda. She wanted a rabbit. How much trouble, he thought, could a bunny be? Well, after the bunny chewed his way through the electrical wires and then hid inside the wall, Bob realized that he had been outwitted. But that was just the beginning. There were parrots, more rabbits, then ducks and African geese. The orphaned turkeys stranded on a nearby road. The abandoned starlings. The sad duck for sale for 25 cents. Bob suddenly found himself constructing pens, cages, barriers, buying feed, clearing duck waste, spoonfeeding at mealtime. One day he realized that he no longer had a life of quiet serenity, but that he'd become a servant to a relentlessly demanding family: Stanley Sue, a gender-switching African grey parrot; Hector, a cantankerous shoulder-sitting Muscovy duck; Howard, an amorous ring-neck dove; and a motley crew of others. Somehow, against every instinct in him, Bob had unwittingly become their slave. He read all the classic animal books -

htmlAdWH('93212816', '728', '90'); Main My First Home Page BirdScales We carry a full line of bird scales at reasonable prices. The most important feature of any bird scale is accuracy and consistency. We have tested many digital scales and found that scales that have a load cell weighing mechanism give results that do not change when the weight is moved from one side of the platform to the other.
Why Buy A Scale? Please don't wait for a "crisis" before you order a bird scale. A crisis can be prevented by weighing your birds weekly. The first sign of illness is weight loss. An accurate bird scale is the best health insurance for your birds. If the bird is losing weight you can catch it and get your bird to an Avian Vet, in time for successful treatment. Birds instincitvely hide signs of sickness until they are desperately ill. It's a matter of survival in the wild. PE-5 Scale has a load cell and goes in 2 gram increments up to 2,200 grams. Perch is permanently attached. $79.00 with perch and $69.00 without perch. Optional Acadpter is $7.00 or works with 9 volt battery.

    Infectious Disease of Birds
Infectious Diseases Of Birds There are numerous infectious diseases seen in birds; the following is a summarization of the most common agents of disease seen in pet birds. In most cases, prevention is far preferable over treatment of the disease after it occurs. Good nutrition and husbandry are the most important factors in prevention of disease. Keeping the cage clean and free of excessive fecal material and food is important in controlling bacterial infections; decaying food and feces are an ideal growth medium for bacteria which can then overwhelm the normal protective mechanisms that birds have. A cage should be arranged such that the bird cannot get to the feces to consume them, (a grate on the bottom works in most cases), and the material on the bottom should be easily cleaned on a daily basis, (newspaper, butcher paper, or paper towels are probably the best). Fresh food should be offered to the bird at least once a day, yet should not be left in the cage for longer than 2-3 hours to prevent spoilage. Remember, in the wild, birds live in the trees, so their feces and food drop to the ground below them and they rarely have close contact as they do in cages. Adequate ventilation is also important in preventing infectious diseases which are more of a problem in confined, small spaces. Housing numerous birds in a single room can allow for the rapid transmission of numerous diseases; many of the bacterial, viral, fungal and chlamydial infections seen in birds are airborne.

Compendium of measures to control Chlamydophila psittaci (formerly Chlamydia psittaci ) infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds, 2005 Appendix 2
Treatment options for pet birds with avian chlamydiosis Treatment of avian chlamydiosis can be difficult, and fatalities may occur. Although treatment protocols are usually successful, knowledge is evolving and no protocol ensures safe treatment or complete elimination of infection. Therefore, treatment for avian chlamydiosis should be supervised by a licensed veterinarian after consultation with an experienced avian veterinarian. During treatment, suggestions in the section "Treatment and care for infected birds" should be followed. All birds with avian chlamydiosis should be treated for 45 days, except as noted in the following sections. Sources of dietary calcium (eg, cuttle bone, mineral block, oyster shell, and highly supplemented pellets) should be reduced if tetracycline drugs are orally administered. In hand-fed neonates in which dietary calcium is required, the calcium and tetracycline should be given at least 4 to 6 hours apart. Treatment Using Doxycycline
Doxycycline is presently the drug of choice for treating birds with avian chlamydiosis. It is better absorbed and more slowly eliminated than other tetracyclines. This allows doxycycline to be effective with lower drug doses (improving palatability with food or water-based administration) or administered less frequently (improving ease of treatment). Treated birds should be monitored for signs of doxycycline toxicosis. Toxicosis can cause general signs of illness (signs of depression, inactivity, and decreased appetite), green- or yellow-stained urine, and altered results of hepatic tests (high serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase and high serum concentration of bile acids). If toxicosis occurs, administration should be stopped and supportive care provided until the bird recovers. Treatment with a different regimen or lower doxycycline dose can be started at a later date.

Diseases from Birds Important Tip! Parents and day-care workers should be aware that children under 5 years old should not touch baby chicks and ducklings. These baby birds can pass Salmonella bacteria to children and make them very sick. Although birds can spread germs to people, illness caused by touching or owning birds is rare. To best protect yourself from getting sick, thoroughly wash your hands with running water and soap after contact with birds or their droppings. Different types of birds can carry different diseases. For example, baby chicks and ducklings often carry the bacterium Salmonella . This germ causes salmonellosis (sal-MOhn-el-OH-sis) in people. Parakeets and parrots can carry the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci (kluh-MID-ee-ah si-TACH-ee). This germ causes the disease psittacosis (sit-a-koh-sis). Pigeon droppings can have germs that make people sick.
