So how can the prospective buyer of a pet bird be assured that the animal These recommendations will help maintain your pet bird s health for many years

Psittacosis (Chlamydia Psittaci Infections) in Pet Birds
By Eva Wallner-Pendleton, Extension Veterinarian Companion birds continue to increase in popularity as pets in the United States. Birds most frequently kept belong to the family psittacidae, or the parrot family. Although domestic breeding of parrots is becoming more widespread, a large number of birds are still imported from outside the United States. By law, these birds must enter the country through quarantine stations. There they spend at least 30 days and are tested for disease and fed food containing tetracycline, an antibiotic. The antibiotic treatment is to hopefully eliminate infections with Chlamydia psittaci, the bacterium that causes psittacosis. Psittacosis is a complex disease that affects many species of wild birds, and occasionally, humans that are in close contact with birds. The organism is shed in the feces and respiratory secretions of infected birds. Other birds pick up the organism by inhaling contaminated aerosols. Although infected birds may become extremely ill and die, most birds usually become asymptomatic carriers. They carry the organism in their bodies, shed the organism in their feces, but do not become ill, unless severely stressed. Without specific tests, it can be difficult to differentiate a negative from a positive psittacosis carrier. Psittacosis infections in people are usually mild, resulting in non-specific flu-like symptoms. Occasionally, however, severe bacterial pneumonia may occur which may require hospitalization. If untreated, psittacosis infections in humans may rarely result in death. Fortunately, the disease is very responsive to tetracycline therapy.

COMMON CONDITIONS OF PET BIRDS
General Information
Pet birds often become ill. While most diseases of birds can affect every species, there are some species that are more prone to develop certain conditions. By being familiar with the various conditions that commonly affect a certain species, your doctor is able to formulate a diagnostic and treatment protocol that is most likely to result in a correct diagnosis and cure for your bird's illness. While not listing every possible disease that may afflict your bird, the following discussion will make you more familiar with the specific problems your pet is most likely to encounter.
Budgerigars
Budgerigars or budgies are known for developing various solid external tumors as well as internal cancer. A common cancer affecting the kidneys or reproductive organs causes a unilateral (one-sided) lameness that owners often mistake for an injured leg. Knemidokoptic mange is a frequent cause of crusty dermatitis of the cere (area around the nostrils over the beak), face and feet. Thyroid disorders such as goiter and hypothyroidism occur in budgies. While not common in birds, budgerigars can become afflicted with diabetes mellitus. Chlamydiosis is a common cause of respiratory disease in these popular birds. Since many owners incorrectly feed an all seed diet to their budgies, hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) is a problem that often causes death in this species. While reproductive problems are not usually seen in most pet birds, egg binding is seen with some frequency in pet budgerigars, even those housed individually without a mate.

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channels
IRC is the most flexible and powerful way to chat online. It is all text based. As well as chatting, you can send private messages to each other, exchange pictures of your birds and other files, and get fancy by using colors. However, IRC does have it's problems. It is a very public forum. Folks use tricks to mass advertize less than desirable channels and web sites. On many IRC networks, your computer's IP address can be obtained and your computer could be attacked. There are exceptions to this and they are noted below. But, IRC is not all bad. It is still a good way to comunicate. There are a lot of channels availible to chat on. For info on how to get to an IRC network check out my

1. PRE-PURCHASE INFORMATION back
Owning a bird as a pet has been popular since the Victorian era, when the parlor was not considered completely decorated unless it had a canary in a very small brass cage residing on a table in a corner. It has been only recently, however, that the health and management of pet birds has become a real concern of the pet bird breeder, owner and Veterinarian. Pet birds are no longer maintained in overly small, ornate cages that do not allow for social contact. Large bright airy cages, along with improved dietary management, have increased the life-span and reproductive efficiency of most of the pet bird species.
Birds can be purchased from a variety of sources, such as pet shops, breeders, private dealers, or individuals. If you are buying a bird for the first time it is almost essential that you purchase your bird from someone who is in the bird breeding and/or selling business. These individuals usually have a reputation to protect; ask around and find out who in your area is known to deal honestly and fairly with buyers. Many stores today, especially those specializing in birds, have been operated by bird fanciers who have turned their hobby into a business; they usually know and care about their birds. They will have in stock items required for basic care and maintenance of birds, such as play toys, cages, bird feed and general health supplies. Sales personnel will generally offer you more information than you ever thought necessary to get you started, so leave yourself plenty of time to shop!

Egg laying in birds

It often comes as a surprise to the owner of a female bird that their pet can lay eggs without the presence of a male. Such eggs are, of course, infertile and will not hatch even if incubated. This can occur in any breed, but is more common in cockatiels, lovebirds, budgies, canaries and finches. Egg laying can start anytime from 5 months to over 10 years of age. Egg laying is a natural, seasonal process in wild birds, breeding birds and some pets. However, it can also become an obsession that drains the bird of vital nutrients, ruins her pet quality, and predisposes her to life-threatening health problems such as egg binding and yolk peritonitis. A bird in the peak of health on an ideal diet my be able to sustain egg production of up to 10-20 eggs per year without serious harm. Beyond that number, egg laying will have serious consequences sooner or later, no matter how the bird looks. For a bird that eats a seed based diet or has an underlying health problem any egg laying at all is dangerous.

33. Vitamin A Deficiency In Parrots And Other Birds
Describes the most common preventable avian disease, hypovitaminosis A, which particularly affects pet birds that eat only seeds.
http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/vitamina.htm
Dealing With Vitamin A Deficiency in Birds
by Hannis L. Stoddard, III, DVM
Vitamin A deficiency can be disastrous for your bird but it's preventable The most common preventable avian disease that we see at our practice is hypovitaminosis A, or vitamin A deficiency, with or without accompanying secondary infections. Pet birds that eat only seeds (especially sunflower seeds and peanuts) are most prone to this problem because an all-seed diet is low in vitamin A. When vitamin A deficiency occurs, the cells that line the respiratory, reproductive and digestive tracts undergo structural change, making them unable to secrete mucous. Since mucous acts as a protective blanket to prevent invasion from pathogens (disease- causing agents), vitamin A deficiency allows environmental bacteria and other microorganisms to penetrate the mucous membrane barrier and set up "housekeeping" within these tissues. Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency depend on which organ system is affected (for instance the reproductive, digestive, or respiratory tracts) and which microorganism or combination of microorganisms is invading the patient. The respiratory system is the most often affected. Since the mouth and sinus are also lined by the cells that are compromised, you need only look inside the bird's mouth to see the early signs of this deficiency. Initially, you see small white plaques on the roof of the mouth and/or at the base of the tongue. The plaques ultimately become infected, forming large, obvious abscesses. The abscesses can distort the glottis (opening of the windpipe), causing labored breathing and eventually mechanical suffocation. The abscesses can even grow so large that they block the choana (the slit in the roof of the mouth). When this happens, the bird will exhibit profuse nasal discharge and obvious swelling around the eyes. The pain from these pockets of infection will eventually cause the bird to starve. The microorganisms can also spread throughout the bird's body with disastrous consequences.

34. Feeding Pet Birds
Remember Salty foods are acceptable for pet birds as long as they are given in moderation and as long as fresh water or fruit juice is always available.
http://www.ahc.umn.edu/rar/MNAALAS/Brdfd.html
Feeding Caged Birds
Fruit Juice Vs Water Feeding Large Caged Birds Food Items Feeding Small Caged Birds ... Bacterial Contamination The exact nutritional requirements of caged birds are unknown, in spite of claims to the contrary by some product manufacturers, retailers and breeders. Far too much emphasis has been placed on seed and nut diets for caged birds. They represent a relative-ly nonperishable convenience for bird owners but are a miserably deficient diet for pet birds, especially the larger hookbills. Such diets are excessively rich in oils, extremely deficient in certain vitamins (notably vitamin A), and have an unacceptable calcium to phosphorus ratio. Furthermore, recent research has shown that the high oil content of these food items confers an addictive quality on them.
Fruit Juice Vs Water
Whenever possible, fruit juice (apple juice is a good starter) should be substituted for the drinking water. As an alternative, Tang (or its equivalent) can be added to the drinking water. This may not be a practical suggestion for birds that habitually bathe in their drinking water. These additives or fruit juices provide more nutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.) than water alone and they help to mask the taste of other items (vitamins, antibiotics if necessary, etc.) that may be added to the drinking water. Fruit juices that produce stains (for example, grape juice) should not be used. Water to which perishable items have been added or fruit juices must be changed every 12-24 hours and perhaps even more often on especially warm days, to prevent spoilage. Actually, even plain water should be changed with the same frequency for the same reasons.

Home Page Articles Home Page Basic Care Articles Breeding Articles ... of the ACS Showing Your Pet Bird By Pam Thompson, Pet Advisor Calling all Pet Cockatiel Owners! The fall shows are underway. Have you thought about showing your pet cockatiel? If so, I guarantee you will have lots of fun, learn something new about cockatiels, and make a new friend or two that can outlast you in a conversation about birds. In this month's column, I'd like to share with you some of the reasons I heard why pet owners don't show. My bird's wings are clipped: My bird may pick up a disease: Transmission from an airborne disease occurs when droppings from a diseased bird dries, is disturbed, and particles become airborne. At a show, the likelihood of this is rare. The amount of time the birds are in their show cages doesn't really allow enough time for the droppings to dry enough to become brittle or powdery. The rooms that shows are held in are large enough that air isn't concentrated around the birds. Sick birds do not show well and any bird that appears ill is dismissed from the show hall immediately by the Superintendents of each division. Quote from Dr. Al Decoteau: "It seems the disease aspect has been a very poor excuse for not showing. We have hypochondriacs in the bird world as we do in humanity; there are those that are afraid to move their birds anywhere yet they are the ones who wander through pet shops which can be more dangerous than any bird show. Bird show people take great care of their birds. In the 40 years I have exhibited and judged bird shows I have never seen a disease problem either at a show or after a show".

http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/care1.htm
Bird Care Guide Are you thinking of getting a new bird as a pet? Each species is unique and wonderful in its own way but there are some general guidelines that apply to them all. Be sure the bird you choose is healthy. A sick bird is no bargain no matter what the price. By the time a bird shows any symptoms of disease, illness has usually become quite advanced. If a bird appears droopy, ruffled, tired or hides his head under his wing, this is not the bird for you. If he sneezes, sits on the bottom of the cage, has a discharge above his nostrils or droppings stuck to his tail feathers, there may be big problems. If he makes clicking sounds as he breathes or if his tail bobs, the bird may have serious respiratory disease and you should choose another individual. Signs of good health in a bird include bright eyes, clean shiny feathers, good appetite and lots of energy. Healthy birds eat often and are active. To help insure a healthy pet, obtain your bird from a reputable bird store or breeder. Take your new bird to an avian veterinarian for a "well bird check up" immediately. Good pet stores will allow you to return a sick bird. This insures that you get a healthy pet, and lets you meet an avian veterinarian in your area. It also helps the pet store or breeder maintain healthy birds.
