He climbed back up to his perch. Andy reached out and grabbed one of his toys and smashed at it, flinging it back and forth. He was hungry and there was no seed! He grabbed another toy and really shook it this time! What was this? Something hanging from a toy? It looked familiar. Andy had seen little hard pieces of this in with his seed. He grabbed it with his foot and pulled it towards his beak. It was little pieces of corn all stuck together. It might be ok to try just a little teensy bite. Ugh - it was too mushy! COMMON SKIN AND FEATHER DISORDERS Part I
by Linda Pesek DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Avian)
There are a number of diseases and disorders which can affect birds skin and feathers. Some may be inherited, while others, such as parasites, can be contracted. Knowing which are serious and what to do if they occur can greatly improve a bird's comfort and even save its life. Some of the more common skin and feather disorders are discussed below. Others are covered in Common Skin and Feather Disorders Part II. Feather Cysts Feather cysts appear as oval or elongated swellings involving a single or several feather follicles. Although they may occur anywhere, they most commonly are found involving the primary feathers of the wings. A feather cyst occurs when a growing feather is unable to protrude through the skin and curls within the follicle. As the feather continues to grow, the mass enlarges and a cheesy exudative material composed of keratin accumulates. Although feather cysts may be seen in all species, the highest incidence is in Blue and Gold Macaws and certain breeds of canaries. It is thought these feather cysts may be the result of an inherited predisposition - as in certain species of canaries or acquired as a result of infection or trauma involving the feather follicle.

A good choice is natural branches of hard, safe woods like manzanita and ribbonwood, which are available from many pet shops. Never use sand-paper covered perches, because they can severely damage birds' feet. Click for more tips Those Not-So Severes Macaws Learn about these fascinating birds! About Bird Care Dog Care ... Clients Only Bird Topics: Emergencies Pet Bird Care Budgerigars Canaries ... Emergencies
The ill bird loses body heat very quickly when it stops eating, as the energy reserves are depleted by illness. By re-establishing the normal body temperature and blood sugar levels, most lives are saved. Pet Bird Care
Hand reared parrot birds make the best pets. Parrots have always made excellent pets because of their affectionate and loving nature. As well, their ability to imitate speech and noises has endeared these birds to man since ancient times. Budgerigars
The 4 million years of prolific breeding still remains in the blood (genes) of the modern day budgerigar and can be restored by providing it with exactly the same conditions that made the wild bird so successful. We call this "Good Aviary Management". Canaries
Breeding canaries for competitive exhibition has always been an extremely difficult challenge for seasoned fanciers let alone newcomers to the hobby, largely because the canary of today is so much larger than the original birds.
Backyard and exhibition poultry flocks are at a distinct health advantage because they run free. Free-range poultry are able to select exactly what they need from the yard in terms of trace elements and vitamin-rich green food.

    THE KITCHEN PHYSICIAN V
    Herbal Remedies For Parrots
    by Carolyn Swicegood
Herbal medicine was early man's first line of defense against the many ills and accidents that plagued him. Ancient humans learned from the observation of animals, including birds, how to use leaves, earth, mud and water to make soothing applications. Although the methods were crude, several of today's medicines are based upon sources as simple as those of ancient man. Presently, the use of herbs as self-prescribed medication is growing rapidly in the United States. It is an industry with more than $1.5 billion in annual sales. Medicinal herbs are the same natural plant drugs that have been used since antiquity. They remain the only form of medicine for a large majority of the world's population that lacks access to hospitals and pharmacies. Some of the popular herbal remedies for people are: HERBAL TREATMENTS FOR PARROTS
Years ago, only the most experimental-minded of birdkeepers used herbs, because there were no guidelines for their use, nor had dosages for them been determined. As we realized that the potential for harm to our birds by herbal remedies was somewhat less than that of pharmaceuticals, we began to establish dosages by starting with minute amounts and increasing gradually to the optimal level. When using the milder herbs, one might use the method of establishing the correct dosage for a human infant of about ten pounds, and use one tenth the amount for a parrot weighing approximately one pound.
