Pesticides are an important management tool in agricultural production. They increase yields and reduce the presence of foreign materials in some commodities. This brochure is designed to explain what action the Illinois Department of Agriculture takes when misuse occurs and to help producers use pesticides responsibly. In 1966, Illinois became one of the first states to regulate pesticides. The state still has one of the most thorough licensing and enforcement programs, surpassing even federal guidelines. Proper use of pesticides is important since pesticide drift can harm susceptible vegetation, wildlife and water supplies. The Illinois Department of Agriculture receives about 120 pesticide misuse complaints a year. About 60 percent of those complaints involve drift.

Introduction
Pesticides are designed to stop or limit pest occurrence. Insecticides kill insects, while herbicides kill weeds and fungicides suppress or kill fungi. All of these products are pesticides. Most of us recognize that pesticides allow agricultural producers to improve the quality, quantity and diversity of our food supply. In addition, pesticides are used in the timber, turf, horticulture, aquatic and structural pest control (exterminating) industries to protect the places where we live, work and play. Many homeowners and home gardeners also apply pesticides to their houses, yards and animals. It is important to understand the fate of a pesticide once it is applied, as this allows applicators to select the most effective and environmentally safe product. This publication provides a general overview of how pesticides interact with the environment.

EPA and Mosquito Control
Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire Mosquito-borne diseases affect millions of people worldwide each year. In the United States, some species of mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as encephalitis, dengue fever, and malaria to humans, and a variety of diseases to wildlife and domestic animals. To combat mosquitoes and the public health hazards they present, many states and localities have established mosquito control programs. These programs, which are based on surveillance, can include nonchemical forms of prevention and control as well as ground and aerial application of chemical and biological pesticides. The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to protect human health and the environment. EPA reviews and approves pesticides and their labeling to ensure that the pesticides used to protect public health are applied by methods which minimize the risk of human exposure and adverse health and environmental effects. In relation to mosquito control, the Agency also serves as a source of information about pesticide and non-pesticide controls to address the concerns of the general public, news media, and the state and local agencies dealing with outbreaks of infectious diseases or heavy infestations of mosquitoes. The following documents provide some basic information on mosquito control, safety precautions, and information on insecticides used for mosquito control programs.

Before a pesticide can be marketed and used in the United States, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) requires that EPA evaluate the proposed pesticide to assure that its use will not pose unreasonable risks of harm to human health and the environment. This regulation involves an extensive review of health and safety information.

However, these data are not readily available or organized in a manner that is usable to the IPM practitioner. Therefore, the purpose of this bulletin is to organize the published environmental impact information of pesticides into a usable form to help growers and other IPM practitioners make more environmentally sound pesticide choices. This bulletin presents a method to calculate the environmental impact of most common fruit and vegetable pesticides (insecticides, acaricides, fungicides and herbicides) used in commercial agriculture. The values obtained from these calculations can be used to compare different pesticides and pest management programs to ultimately determine which program or pesticide is likely to have the lower environmental impact. Executive Summary
A benchmark investigation of industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides in umbilical cord blood Environmental Working Group, July 14, 2005
Summary. In the month leading up to a baby's birth, the umbilical cord pulses with the equivalent of at least 300 quarts of blood each day, pumped back and forth from the nutrient- and oxygen-rich placenta to the rapidly growing child cradled in a sac of amniotic fluid. This cord is a lifeline between mother and baby, bearing nutrients that sustain life and propel growth. In a study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in collaboration with Commonweal, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals. Tests revealed a total of 287 chemicals in the group. The umbilical cord blood of these 10 children, collected by Red Cross after the cord was cut, harbored pesticides, consumer product ingredients, and wastes from burning coal, gasoline, and garbage.

Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce
When you're grocery shopping, it's easy to find labels and pick foods that help you reduce cholesterol and saturated fat, avoid antibiotics, or steer clear of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners. But when it comes to pesticides, consumers have been left in the dark. Now there's help. The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce lists the 12 popular fresh fruits and vegetables that are consistently the most contaminated with pesticides and those 12 fruits and vegetables that consistently have low levels of pesticides. If you are concerned about pesticides in your diet, the handy wallet card can help you choose produce that lowers exposure to pesticides for you and your family. For the most contaminated items, we suggest substituting organically grown produce whenever possible. When this is not an option, we still recommend eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables but use this guide to buy those that typically have fewer pesticides.

). Pesticides were identified as one of the 15 leading causes of impairment for streams included on States' Clean Water Act section 303(d) lists of impaired waters. Pesticides have also been identified as a potential cause of amphibian declines and deformities and as one of a number of potential causes of pollinator species' declines and declines of other beneficial insects. By their very nature, most pesticides pose some risk of harm to humans, animals or the environment because they are designed to kill or adversely affect living organisms. Significant fish and bird kills have resulted from the legal application of pesticides, such as the 1991 death of more than one million fish in Louisiana ( Williams, Ted

ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS INTRODUCTION Chemicals released into the environment may have a variety of adverse ecological effects. Ranging from fish and wildlife kills to forest decline, ecological effects can be long-term or short-lived changes in the normal functioning of an ecosystem, resulting in economic, social, and aesthetic losses. These potential effects are an important reason for regulation of pesticides, toxic substances, and other sources of pollution. WHAT IS AN ECOSYSTEM?

In fact, according to a Health Canada poll, more than half of Canadians believe that environmental contamination has already hurt their health. Cancer rates are rising. Asthma is an epidemic and toxic waste sites, like the Sydney Tar Ponds, languish while neighbours fall ill.
Childhood cancers have increased by 26 percent overall, while the incidence of particular cancers has increased still more. Since 1971 acute lymphocytic leukemia has increased 62 percent, brain cancer by 50 percent, and the incidence of bone cancer by 40 percent. Testicular cancer, primarily in young men, has increased 300 percent. Breast cancer rates are an epidemic, with the lifetime risk for Canadian women rising to one in nine today.
After 30 years, one is entitled to ask why we are losing the war against cancer. The answer is likely that we have focused our resources on only part of the problem. In fact, the funding has been directed nearly entirely to the lab coat work of finding a cure. (Read more about this issue here
Sierra Club of Canada works to deliver a healthier environment for a healthy population by encouraging bans on toxic pesticide use for frivolous purposes, the clean up of toxic sites, reduction at source of dangerous substances and promoting both safe and sustainable agriculture.
