KEEPING PESTICIDES OUT OF WATER
LOCAL ENVIRONMENT RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PESTICIDES (LERAP)
This document is also available in pdf format
Introduction
Most pesticide users are aware of the need for care in selecting and applying suitable products to their crops. Such action helps to minimise the amount of pesticide reaching ground or surface water by seepage or run-off from sprayed crops. This contributes to our water quality, keeps water treatment costs down and makes further restrictions on pesticide use less likely. Run-off from a crop is not, however, the only way that pesticide can enter our water. Spillage of concentrate or spray falling outside the crop area can also result in significant quantities reaching our water supplies. This booklet gives advice on good practice for handling pesticides before, during and after spraying. It also illustrates the pollution potential for concentrates and thus the importance of operator awareness and care. The EC limit for an individual pesticide in drinking water is 0.1 micrograms per litre (µg/1) - equivalent to one drop of concentrate in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The Pesticide Education Center is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 to educate workers and the public about the hazards of pesticides to human health and the environment. The Pesticide Education Center (PEC) provides critical information on health effects and safer alternative pest control methods to the public. Our mission is to educate consumers to make more informed choices to protect themselves, their families, their pets, their neighbors, and the environment from toxic pesticides. The founder and president of the PEC, Dr. Marion Moses, is a physician specializing in occupational and environmental medicine with many years experience investigating and diagnosing pesticide-related illnesses. The center produces videos and publishes books and other materials.

In Brief
: History
The Story of Silent Spring
How a courageous woman took on the chemical industry and raised important questions about humankind's impact on nature.
Although their role will probably always be less celebrated than wars, marches, riots or stormy political campaigns, it is books that have at times most powerfully influenced social change in American life. Thomas Paine's Common Sense galvanized radical sentiment in the early days of the American revolution; Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe roused Northern antipathy to slavery in the decade leading up to the Civil War; and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring , which in 1962 exposed the hazards of the pesticide DDT, eloquently questioned humanity's faith in technological progress and helped set the stage for the environmental movement. Carson, a renowned nature author and a former marine biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was uniquely equipped to create so startling and inflammatory a book. A native of rural Pennsylvania, she had grown up with an enthusiasm for nature matched only by her love of writing and poetry. The educational brochures she wrote for the Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as her published books and magazine articles, were characterized by meticulous research and a poetic evocation of her subject.

New Methods for Measuring pesticides and their Degradates in the environment.

Measuring Pesticides and How They Transform in the Environment
New and innovative pesticides are being developed and are applied in the environment every year. In many cases, methods to assess the fate of these new pesticides and their degradates in the environment are not available. The Toxic Substances Hydrology (Toxics) Program develops methods to measure a variety of pesticides and their degradates, and assesses their environmental transport. Degradates are the product of environmental transformation of the parent pesticide and can have similar properties. (More information on the significance of degradates in streams and ground water is available.) The methods are effective at low but environmentally significant levels, enabling determination of the potential for, and circumstances of, harmful effects. This information is used for pesticide registration, resource management, and manufacturing decisions. For example:
  • The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed two new water-quality analytical methods for the determination of chloroacetanilide herbicide degradates in water. These methods use solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography – diode array detection (HPAA) and high performance liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LCAA). Both methods measure the concentration of 10 acetanilides herbicide degradates in samples of filtered water. The reporting limits for the HPAA method are 0.2 micrograms per liter (ug/L), while reporting limits for the LCAA method are 0.05 ug/L.

The Pesticides in the Environment group considers all aspects of the environmental impact of pesticides from point and diffuse sources on water resources. The fate of pesticides in the unsaturated subsurface, aquifers and surface water are studied including transport, sorption and degradation. Technological and management issues are also considered. Research is performed nationally and internationally in collaboration with universities, research institutes, environmental authorities and industry. Coordinator: Hans-J¸rgen Albrechtsen The main research topics are: Transport and Sorption of pesticides in unsaturated subsurface and aquifers (sorption, transport and sorption in flow systems, fractured clay)
Degradation
of pesticides in unsaturated subsurface and aquifers (microbial degradation, degradation in flow systems, chalk/limestone, metabolites, immunochemical analysis for pesticides)
