The drawing above is by Huaman Poma de Ayala (1534?-1615?), a half-blood historian who gave his version of the Conquest in a complaint to the Spanish king. The 400-some drawings that illustrated his thesis, "The first new chronicle and good government," are among the most evocative in the Inca and Andean culture. His vision of the trauma of the Conquest is dramatically different than those provided by the Conquistadors and the colonial administrators who came later. 20,000 Years in the Shadows of the Andes
The Western World became aware of Peru when the Conquistador Francisco Pizarro confronted the Inca Atahualpa in the mountain town of Cajamarca in 1532. Since that encounter, the challenge has been to figure out what the mixture of cultures has produced. History seems to reside just under the Peruvian top soil. A good strong breeze can wipe away the sand and leave the burial sites and buried treasures exposed. A incident, like the Conquest, can be portrayed in popular consciousness as if it had just happened a few years ago. There are scores of reenactments of this encounter between Atahualpa and Pizarro all across Peru each year.

Mummy bundles of entire families were found in the graves from various eras, built on top of each other, they say. The researchers described the find as "exceptional" as the previously ignored cemetery had not been looted and is completely intact. Pachacamac, south of the capital, Lima, is thought to have been ruled by the Ychsma lords from 900 to 1470. The Incas turned it into a place of pilgrimage and it was abandoned after the Spanish conquest. Today, the sprawling ruins attract many tourists. Seeking cures Peter Eeckhout, who heads the team of archaeologists working there, said the discovery would help to reveal how different cultures used the area. The Incas turned Pachacamac into a place of pilgrimage "We have encountered superimposed burials - so one beneath the other - which represent several different cultures and periods of the site," he said.

"When I came back from Lima, I felt full of warmth. It was like I would remind them of all the ways they were wonderful - and they did the same for me."

International travel to Peru reveals a country of amazing physical beauty, with nearly a tenth of the world's rain forests, a long coast along the South Pacific Ocean, and the Andes Mountains running straight through its center. For years it has been known to international travelers as home to some of the world's greatest ancient wonders, including the Inca ruins of Machu Pichu and the Nasca Lines. The history of the Incas and Peru's many struggles make for a fascinating story. More than fifty distinct indigenous peoples still live in Peru; recently many of them have moved to the cities. This shift of population from rural to urban has enlivened Peruvian cities with a new sense of diversity. Lima Ayacucho Trujillo
Lima
As the capital of Peru, Lima is the focal point of politics, culture and history. Home to more than eight million people and growing rapidly, Lima presents a complex and fascinating view of urban life. The influx of indigenous people has created a city of diverse cultures in which the traditional and modern coexist. Between the major universities, indigenous handicraft markets, and coastal parks, Lima provides you with the chance to engage in every aspect of Peruvian life.

(When I find an Internet connection this will be one of a series of mini historical reports on Peru.)
    Peru is famous
for Cuzco, the capital of the fallen Inca Empire, and Cuzco is famous for Machu Picchu, the incredible and all inspiring "lost city of the Incas!" In this my second visit to Machu Picchu in 29 years (I came here when I was a City College student many years ago) once more I felt the power. Once more, and quite speechless, I was able to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of this majestic place.
"Looking into and around Machu Picchu we see nothing but stones. Stones of all sizes and dimensions."
Moving among tourists from all over the world, I remembered the time I first perused the cultural intricacies of this great city of stone. Through these spaces that knew more glorious times, one is always able to perceive the Inca's fascination with nature, evidenced first by the physical location of the city itself, and second by the magnificent topography of the Machu Picchu environs. With even higher mountains and snow-covered peaks, on is able to perceive volumes spoken to the soul. This was a people that chose to live in total harmony with the dictates of Nature.
"Many ancient cities today are dusty and fallen worlds. Machu Picchu will be there forever."

Peru is one of the most popular destinations in South America, and it is not hard to see why. Amazing natural scenery such as the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon Basin provide some of the most diverse life and landscapes on the continent. Peru's history is evident in the art, architecture, music, and culture of this vibrant nation. The Quecha-speaking descendants of the Incas mingle with the progeny of the Spanish conquistadors as time has intertwined their lives, culture and history. Peru boasts Cuzco, the oldest continually inhabited city on the continent and the Colca Canyon, possibly the world's deepest canyon. Prepare for a mystifying and delightful journey! When the Spanish landed in 1531, Peru's territory was the nucleus of the highly developed Inca civilization. Centered at Cuzco, the Inca Empire extended over a vast region from northern Ecuador to central Chile. In search of Inca wealth, the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, who arrived in the territory after the Incas had fought a debilitating civil war, conquered the weakened people. The Spanish had captured the Incan capital at Cuzco by 1533 and consolidated their control by 1542. Gold and silver from the Andes enriched the conquerors, and Peru became the principal source of Spanish wealth and power in South America.
Pizarro founded Lima in 1535. The viceroyalty established at Lima in 1542 initially had jurisdiction over all of South America except Portuguese Brazil. By the time of the wars of independence (1820-24), Lima had become the most distinguished and aristocratic colonial capital and the chief Spanish stronghold in America.
Peru's independence movement was led by Jose de San Martin of Argentina and Simon Bolivar of Venezuela. San Martin proclaimed Peruvian independence from Spain on July 28, 1821. Emancipation was completed in December 1824, when Gen. Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish troops at Ayacucho, ending Spanish rule in South America. Spain made futile attempts to regain its former colonies, but in 1879 it finally recognized Peru's independence.

    Peru Diaries, Part II
Once again in the absence of anything interesting from me I offer a slice of adventure from one of those places you don't think of very much. This is some quite terrific stuff. My buddy the Latin American correspondent should really get a blog of his own. I'm sure he'd have a big audience in no time. Pedro is a 50 year old taxi driver who has two children in the U.S. He took me from my hotel to the center of town. Pedro: Where are you from?
    Andrew: Canada.
Pedro: Is it true that in New York intersections the traffic lights make you wait 5 minutes?
Andrew: I don't know. I don' t think so, that sounds a bit much.
Pedro: What if it was a really busy highway that crossed a dirt road?
Andrew: Well I suppose then it would be reasonable to have a 5 minute red light.
Pedro. I knew it. Those people in New York are crazy. Peru's history is basically string of bad luck. Earthquakes, tidal waves, storms, mudslides, coup d'etats, auto coup d'etats (when the president shuts down his own Congress), wars, famine and fog (about seven months of it a year). When the Spaniards first arrived in Peru the Inca empire was about at its peak, stretching from central Chile all the way up to Colombia. As luck (bad) would have it the Inca emperor had just died and his two sons squabbled over the empire. Son#1 saw the Spaniards and said "Voila, a good opportunity to conquer my brother." The Spaniards said they would help if he filled a room to the ceiling with gold. Son#1 filled the room with gold and was killed. The Spaniards then went to Cusco, where they were greeted by Son#2 as heros for killing Son#1. The Spaniards then killed Son#2. And that's just about how it all got started. 150 Spaniards took over the biggest empire in the Amricas in a little less than a month.

    Change in Peru
TOPLINE: After a decade of authoritarian rule by Alberto Fujimori, Peruvians will finally select a new president on Sunday. A runoff election pits against each other the two candidates who survived a five-candidate vote in April former President Alan Garcia and opposition leader Alejandro Toledo. IN CONTEXT: Garcia returned from exile in January just after corruption charges against him expired and launched a campaign to regain the Peruvian presidency, a position he held from 1985 until 1990. Garcia left office after his economic policies had driven Peru's annual inflation rate to an astonishing 7,600 percent. The silver-tongued Garcia, once compared to former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, threw himself into a race that most observers expected to boil down to former Congresswoman Lourdes Flores and economist Toledo, an Andean Indian who forced then-President Fujimori who succeeded Garcia into a runoff last year. KEY QUESTIONS KEY PLAYERS BOTTOM LINE PROFILES Alejandro Toledo Alan Garcia ELECTION WATCH Peruvian presidential election Toledo withdrew from the runoff, claiming the election was rigged, and Fujimori, running unopposed, was re-elected.
