Peru: General Information
Geography Peru is divided into three regions: The Coast : which features deserts, beautiful beaches and fertile valleys.
Highlands : a mountainous area dominated by the Andes, where Mount Huascaran soars to 6,768 meters.
Jungle :a vast region of tropical vegetation in the Amazon River Basin, home to Peru's largest natural reserves
Although this simple division is a fair portrait of Peru's geography, the reality is much richer and far more complex: in Peru, nature appears to have taken on particular characteristics which have turned its mountains, plains, jungles and valleys into unique habitats.
An extraordinary variety of eco-systems shelters a wide diversity of animals and plants. Surface Area With an area of 1,285,215 square km , Peru is the third-largest country in South America after Brazil and Argentina, ranking it amongst the world's 20 largest nations.
Peru also holds sway over the sea up to 200 miles
from the Peruvian coast and has territorial rights to an area of 60 million hectares in the Antarctic.

HOME Machu Picchu Nazca and Paracas Lake Titicaca Peru LAND OF THE INCAS Peru in South America is a fascinating country. Geographically, Peru encompasses an arid coastal desert, the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and steamy rainforests that form part of the vast Amazon basin. Historically, the region has seen the development of cultures such as the Inca whose legacies remain to mystify travelers and archaeologists to this day. The Inca culture was the last to arise in Peru before the arrival of adventurers and plunderers from overseas... Rise and fall of the Incas In the fifteenth century, the Inca state began to expand under the rule of the emperor Pachacuti. Other cultures were conquered and assimilated to create the most powerful empire in the New World. At its peak the Inca empire stretched for 5500 kilometers from what is now southern Columbia down through Peru to central Chile. Many descendants of the Incas still live in the Peru highlands. The Incas built the staggering citadel of Machu Picchu in a dramatic mountain setting. Machu Picchu survives as the most famous legacy of the fated Inca empire.

The images that immediately spring to mind are Incas and llamas, women wearing skirts with layers of petticoats and incongruous bowler hats, boys herding llamas high in the Andes, rosy faced children in alpaca hats, traditional reed islands on Lake Titicaca, shaman images of the jaguar, caiman and anaconda, the mysterious Nazca lines in the coastal desert, the tropical steamy Amazon rainforest, and the impressive Inca fortresses and towns, such as Macchu Picchu and Cuzco, where traditional festivals to the sun are still practised. Peru's geography and natural history is second to none. Sit on a bus as you travel to the ancient ruins of Kuelap in the cloud forest, and watch the orange sun set as you drive along single track mountain passes with stunning drops of 100s of metres to take your breath away. Or take a river boat on one of the tributaries of the Amazon, which starts its 3000 mile journey in Peru, carrying approximately 20% of the worlds fresh water. It takes under a minute for a piranha to strip you to the bone, but surprisingly two thirds of piranha species are vegetarian! The natural history of Peru is full of astonishing surprises like this, and the rainforest to the east of the country holds fascination to biologists for its immense unspoilt beauty, biodiversity, and being home to animals like the tapir, jaguar, black spider monkeys, capybara, anacondas, caimans and the rare giant river otters. The spine of the country is the spectacular Andean range, which is worth exploring for it's stunning scenery, for it's trekking opportunities and it's immense cultural value, being the homeland if the Incas. To the west is the desert coastal strip, one of the driest places on earth, with the mysterious Nazca lines scored into the earth and seen only from the sky, depicting the animals sacred to former cultural horizons.

Destination: Peru Introduction to Peru Peru is drama. From the rugged terrain of the Andes mountains, to the colorful festivals of the descendants of the Inca, to the overwhelming variety of flora and fauna, Peru demands a visitor's full attention. The Spanish may have conquered Peru in the 1500's, but the traditions and beliefs of its proud people, dating back thousands of years, continue to
    exist today. Geography
'Extreme geography' - this would be an appropriate term for Peru's wildly varied and sometimes very harsh terrain. From coastal desert stretching north and south from Lima, to ice covered, inhospitable peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, to steamy Amazonian jungles, Peru has it all! Cusco and the surrounding sacred valley, where CULTURE XPLORERS groups will spend most of our time, has an altitude of roughly 11,000 - 12,000 feet, making it moderate to warm during the day, cold at night and changeable at any time!

March 11, 2004 Dozens of exquisitely preserved Inca mummies are being recovered from a barren hillside on the outskirts of Peru's bustling capital city, Lima. In a matter of months a highway will roar past the ancient cemetery. "By now we have over 40 [mummy bundles] and the number increases every day," said Guillermo Cock, a Lima-based archaeologist. Cock and his team were contracted by the city government to comb the hillside for any unknown archaeological remains prior to construction of the road, which is the final phase of a project to ease traffic congestion in Lima. "Given the proximity to the city and the tradition of looting in the area, we are really surprised that this is mostly undisturbed, mostly intact, mostly unlooted. Only a few bundles have suffered damage by human action," Cock said. The newfound site is on the northwestern edge the largest Inca cemetery ever excavated, Puruchuco-Huaquerones. With the support of the National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration, Cock recovered thousands of mummies and artifacts at Puruchuco-Huaquerones between 1999 and 2001.

July 22, 2004 As the sun's first rays slant into the depths of Colca Canyon in southern Peru, Andean condors begin to ascend, riding morning thermals on outstretched wings as they scour the landscape for a meal of carrion. A gaggle of tourists crowd the Cruz del Condor, or Condor Cross, canyon overlook, hoping to snap a keepsake image of the majestic birds. The species is listed by the World Conservation Union as "vulnerable." One of the world's largest flying birds, the condor soars on ten-foot (three-meter) wingspans and can weigh up to 33 pounds (15 kilograms). When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in South America in the 16th century, the giant vulture (Vultur gryphus) was a common sight. The bird flourished throughout its range from the northern tip of Venezuela down the spine of the Andes to the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina.
