Peru is divided into three large geographical regions. Te Costa (Coast) is properly a large desert strip, flat or undulatind territory adyacent to the ocean, the Sierra (Mountains) is the mountain territory corresponding to the Andean range. The Selva (jungle) is the flat, wooded and rainy region found at the eastern side of the Andean range. However, the ancient Peruvian manmidentified eight natural regions, each one of these regions covers the territory from the North to the South and from west to East, running along with the Andean range. These regions are:
Chala: covers the territory between the sea and 1640 feet as of the western slope of the Andes. Its weather is temperate, due to the ocean incluence, it has occasional light rains and desert landscapes with valleys irrigated by rivers that descend from the Andes. The cities of Piura, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Lima, Ica, Tacna are all within this region. Yunga , the coastal Yunga raises from 1,640 to 7,540 fees at eh western side of the Andes. Ir ia rugged and has a desert landscape, it receives occasional light rains. The fluvial Yunga is found between 7,540 and 3,280 feet at the eastern side of the Andes. Its weather is lesshot, more rainy and the vegetation is denser than the coastal Yunga.

La Costa
, the coastal area, is semi-arid to arid. It stretches the Pacific coastline from north to south. Most parts, except for the entire north, consist of desert ,and rainfall is very low in this area. However, many rivers from the Andesflow through the region towards the Pacific, thus creating fertile rivervalleys. The capital Lima is situated inthe coastal area.

This territory has wide river flood beds. They are covered with rainwater and usually are swamped in summer. In these flood areas there are elevated sectors called "restingas", which always stand out on the Amazonian plain, even in times of the greatest swellings. There are numerous lagoons known as "cochas" and "tipishcas", surrounded by marshy areas with abundant grass vegetation.
Numerous rivers cross Loreto's territory. All of these are a part of the Hydrographical Amazonian System. The majority of them are navigable. The main river crossing the department is the Amazon. It's numerous curves are always changing and sometimes make for a difficult journey. The width between banks of the Amazon sometimes measures a staggering 4 km. The Yavari River runs from Peru to Brazil. The Putumayo River serves as a border with Colombia. The Ucayali and the Marañón Rivers penetrate Loreto after going through the Pongo de Manseriche. Introduction to Medical Geography
Medical geography uses the concepts and techniques of the discipline of geography to investigate health-related topics. One of the predominant concepts of geography as a science is that it examines relationships between peoples and their environments in holistic terms. In the particular subfield of medical geography the focus is upon those interactions that bear specifically upon human health within a variety of cultural systems and a diverse biosphere. Regarding geographic method, the main tool is spatial analysis. Where disease occurs is a matter of importance. The map on the right illustrates the spread of an influenza epidemic in Glasgow. Comparison of disease rates in different places may provide clues to causation or serve as a starting point for further investigation. Maps showing distributional patterns of health-related phenomena with their accompanying associative analyses bring insight and strategy for better public health. A famous example of an old partnership between geography and epidemiology is the work of Dr. John Snow in the middle of the 19th century, who backed up his hunch that cholera was spread by infected water supplies by making a map of victims in a part of 19th century London (shown at right). This was during the days when medical opinion ascribed the disease to 'miasmas' and other emanations from the swamps and mud of the Thames River. His map showed a cluster of cases centered on a public water pump. This spatial association was used to eliminate the source of infection. The causative agent of cholera

A Geography Lesson
The Andes are the dominating feature of Peru. There are few places like it in the world: the Himilayas, the Alps and the Caucasus. This land mass shapes history and the future. Man is challenged to survive in this environment. The Andes rise 6,000 meter or 19,700 feet above sea level, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon jungle basin. From the depths of the Peru-Chile trench just off the Peruvian coast to the Andean peaks is a difference in altitude of more than 40,000 feet within a distance of 50 miles. The chilly currents of the Pacific Ocean that flow out of the Peru-Chile Trench supercharges the coastal air with humidity, inhibiting rainfall. At most, a low, soupy overcasting covers the coast for six months a year. It makes Lima a depressing place. altiplano economy. The Andes comprise about a third of Peru's territory. The extreme variables of altitude, temperature, moisture, sun light and other factors make the Andes a highly risky environment. The highest peak is Nevado Huascaran at 6,768 meters above sea level.
