PERU
Introduction
We can assure your majesty that it is so beautiful and has such fine buildings that it would even be remarkable in Spain.
-Francisco Pizarro, describing Cuzco in a letter to King Charles V of Spain.
P eru is South America's third largest country, covering 1,285,215 sq. km., and can be divided into three distinct geographic regions. The best known of these is the central high sierra of the Andes, with its massive peaks, steep canyons, and extraordinary pre Columbian archaeological sites. The Andes are still one of the world's most unstable mountain ranges, with frequent earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Despite such instability, the Andes are also the site of the most fascinating pre-Columbian cities of South America-like the great city of the clouds, Machu Picchu.
The Andes are by no means the only region to visit in Peru. Also of great interest is Peru's narrow, lowland coastal region, a northern extension of the Atacama Desert. Although the Atacama is generally known as the most arid region on the planet, the climate along Peru's shores is made cooler and less dry by La Garuùa, a dense fog created by the collision of the frigid waters of the Humboldt Current with the heated sands of the Atacama. Lima, Trujillo, and Chiclayo, three of Peru's major population centres, are located along this coastal desert.
Peru's third great region is the dense forest that surrounds the headwaters of the Amazon beneath the eastern slopes of the Andes. This part of the country is so inaccessible that only the most adventurous and intrepid travelers should attempt to penetrate its mysterious emerald depths. In fact, the region's capital of Iquitos, a city of 400,000, is accessible only by air or by boat up the Amazon.

Peru:
Geography
Peru renowned as the land of the Incas, has an area of 1,285,216 square kms, and it is on the Pacific Coast of north-central South America. It is the third largest country in South America, behind Brazil and Argentina. Peru is considered a tropical country. It has three major regions, a narrow coastal belt, the wide Andean mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. The coastal strip is mostly desert; however the major cities are found in that area which are connected by the Pan-American highway. The rivers running down the steep slopes of the Andes, generate narrow oases (valleys) where most of the agriculture centres seat. Distinctive and exotic plants and animals inhabit these three different regions. From llamas, alpacas, vicunas and condors to piranhas and toucans; Peru is a naturalist's paradise. The Andes rise rapidly from the coastland. Just 100 km inland the Andes reach 6000 meters (19,688 feet.) The Huascaran is the highest mountain with 6768 meters (22,208 feet.) Most of Peru's Andes lie between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, separated by vertiginous canyons.

GEOGRAPHY
By its surface (1 285 215 km2), Peru is the third country of South America after Brazil and Argentina. Located between the Ecuador and the 18th degree of southern latitude, it belongs to the intertropical zone. It cuts out in three great geographical areas: in the west, on the Peaceful coast, a narrow desert tape strewn with urbanized oases, a central mountainous area, the sierra of the Andes (approximately 30 % of the territory), composed of cordilleras culminating with more 6.000m and of a vast plate, Altiplano; finally, in the east, the forest plains and the hills of the Amazonian basin which occupy 60 % of the territory. The mass of the Andes and the currents coastal induce great variations of the atmospheric conditions from one area to another and the words "winter" and "summer" lose their direction somewhat. Actually, the seasons are marked by differences in precipitations. Liméniens, for example, call be December to April, heats and shone upon, and winter the remainder of the year, where the fog settles. In the sierra, the winter is the rain season (from October at May). Although the eternal snow covers the highest tops, the falls of snow are not very frequent in the inhabited areas. In the Amazonian forest, finally, the weather is hot and wet all during the year.

Peru - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Peru is a country in South America. It lies on the west coast of Peru, along the Pacific Ocean. The capital of Peru is a big city named Lima. The land of Peru is very beautiful. But some places in Peru are very dangerous and even a little scary.
There are the Andes Mountains in Peru. These are some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. It is also the longest mountain chain in the world. The Andes stretch 7,000 km from end to end. Many of the Andes Mountains are taller than 4,000 m. They are very rugged mountains. The straight sides of many of these mountains can even look a little scary especially if you are afraid of heights!
High in the Andes Mountains is one of Peru's most famous cities. But this city hasn't been lived in for hundreds of years. Explorers found this ancient city in 1911. It is called Machu Picchu. It is a huge fortress made out of stone. It sits on top of very high places in the Andes Mountains.

    The Research Problem
Early in 1991 a number of cases of Cholera were reported in coastal areas of Peru. Within a few weeks, the disease spread throughout Peru and into other countries in South, Central and North America. The goal of this project is to map the spread of Cholera through Peru during the January 1991 epidemic. We know that Cholera is a disease associated with poverty and that, given adequate sanitation and access to medical care, the disease is not a major health threat.
    Introduction to Medical Geography
Medical geography uses the concepts and techniques of the discipline of geography to investigate health-related topics. One of the predominant concepts of geography as a science is that it examines relationships between peoples and their environments in holistic terms. In the particular subfield of medical geography the focus is upon those interactions that bear specifically upon human health within a variety of cultural systems and a diverse biosphere. Regarding geographic method, the main tool is spatial analysis. Where disease occurs is a matter of importance. The map to the left illustrates the spread of an influenza epidemic in Glasgow. Comparison of disease rates in different places may provide clues to causation or serve as a starting point for further investigation. Maps showing distributional patterns of health-related phenomena with their accompanying associative analyses bring insight and strategy for better public health.

    Geography of Peru
World Facts Index Peru Map of Peru The Costa, Sierra, and Selva (selvajungle), each comprising a different and sharply contrasting environment, form the major terrestrial regions of the country. Each area, however, contains special ecological niches and microclimates generated by ocean currents, the wide range of Andean altitudes, solar angles and slopes, and the configurations of the vast Amazonian area. As a consequence of these complexities, thirty-four ecological subregions have been identified. The development of Andean agriculture started about 9,000 years ago, when inhabitants began experimenting with the rich vegetation they utilized as food gatherers. Each ecological niche, or "floor," begins about 500 to 1,000 meters vertically above the last, forming a minutely graduated and specialized environment for life. The central Andean area is, thus, one of the world's most complex biospheres, which human efforts made into one of the important prehistoric centers of plant domestication. Native domesticated plants number in the hundreds and include many varieties of such important crops as potatoes, maize (corn), lima beans, peppers, yucca or manioc, cotton, squashes and gourds, pineapples, avocado, and coca, which were unknown in the Old World. Dozens of varieties of fruits and other products, despite their attractive qualities, are little known outside the Andean region. The Coastal Region The Andean Highlands The Sierra is the commanding feature of Peru's territory, reaching heights up to 6,768 meters. Hundreds of permanently glaciated and snowcapped peaks tower over the valleys. The steep, desiccated Pacific flank of the Andes supports only a sparse population in villages located at infrequent springs and seepages. In contrast, tropical forests blanket the eastern side of the Andes as high as 2,100 meters. Between these extremes, in the shadows of the great snowpeaks, lie the most populous highland ecological zones: the intermontane valleys (kichwa) and the higher uplands and grassy puna or Altiplano plateaus. Approximately 36 percent of the population lives in thousands of small villages and hamlets that constitute the rural hinterland for the regional capitals and trading centers. Over 15 percent of Peruvians live at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, 20 percent live between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, and 1 percent regularly reside at altitudes over 4,000 meters.
