Peru History and Culture
History Evidence of settlement in Peru dates back thousands of years but, except for some scattered ruins, little is known of these early peoples. In about 1250 BC groups such as the Chavín, Chimú, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco migrated into the region from the north. The Chimú built the city of Chan Chan about AD 1000, ruins of which remain today. Culture The Native American heritage of Peru is one of the richest in South America. Although Spain gave Peru its language, religion, and rulers, the civilization of the Inca has left its traces throughout Peruvian culture.

HOME Machu Picchu Nazca and Paracas Lake Titicaca Peru LAND OF THE INCAS Peru in South America is a fascinating country. Geographically, Peru encompasses an arid coastal desert, the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and steamy rainforests that form part of the vast Amazon basin. Historically, the region has seen the development of cultures such as the Inca whose legacies remain to mystify travelers and archaeologists to this day. The Inca culture was the last to arise in Peru before the arrival of adventurers and plunderers from overseas... Rise and fall of the Incas In the fifteenth century, the Inca state began to expand under the rule of the emperor Pachacuti. Other cultures were conquered and assimilated to create the most powerful empire in the New World. At its peak the Inca empire stretched for 5500 kilometers from what is now southern Columbia down through Peru to central Chile. Many descendants of the Incas still live in the Peru highlands. The Incas built the staggering citadel of Machu Picchu in a dramatic mountain setting. Machu Picchu survives as the most famous legacy of the fated Inca empire.

HOME Land of the Incas Nazca and Paracas Lake Titicaca Peru MACHU PICCHU The Lost City of the Incas The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru is one of the world's most spectacular ruins. Houses, temples, staircases and agricultural terraces were built high among rugged and forested mountains with distant snow-covered Andean peaks providing a backdrop. Far below, the rapids of the Urubamba river loop round the site. The mysteries of Machu Picchu Machu Picchu is a mysterious place built in a staggering landscape for reasons forgotten with the passing of the Inca empire. It is believed to have been constructed by the great ruler Pachacuti around the middle of the 15th century. The Spanish conquistadors never found the site, probably because it was abandoned before the conquest. Because the Incas left no written records, historians can only speculate on the purpose of Machu Picchu. Some believe that the dramatic location may have held geographical or astronomical significance to the Incas.
Long after being abandoned by the Incas and overgrown by dense forest, Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by the explorer and historian Hiram Bingham.

To find within themselves their Spirit in harmony with mankind's past and present. Perhaps for a brief moment touch the future in joy with our Earth. Flying over the Andes Mountains has always been more than an exciting experience for me. 4500+ miles of continuous and seemingly endless valleys, deep rock gorges and ice-capped mountain peaks rising from the Caribbean Sea stretching the length of South America to a descent into the Antarctic Regions. The winding rivers and creek beds carve the terrain, headwaters of fuel for the mighty Amazon River. The few and far between roads and paths scar a landscape where ancient civilizations arose and fell. Remote and oasitic stone ruins hide beneath the bromeliads, festering my imagination, driving my curiosity again to visit a land of Cloud Peoples and Mysteries. A journey this day to Chachapoyas

Hepatitis B threatens an entire culture with extinction
A Candoshi girl carrying her sister. LIMA, 13 June 2005 – UNICEF, working with the Peruvian Ministry of Health, has launched a vaccination campaign to stop a Hepatitis B epidemic in the Upper Amazon. The disease, if not controlled, threatens to wipe out two indigenous groups, the Candoshis and the Shapras. Both groups live in relative isolation from the outside world, maintaining a rich and traditional culture. At the time the vaccination campaign was initiated in 2003, the Hepatitis B epidemic had already infiltrated all 49 communities and affected over 3,000 people in Candoshi and Shapra. One of the best ways to stop the outbreak is to vaccinate newborn babies during the first 24 hours of their life, and to supply subsequent doses to children before the age of six months. In order to reach the remote region where these two ethnic groups live, UNICEF staff must travel at least two-and-a-half days from Lima to the town of San Lorenzo, and then they must make an additional journey to reach the Candoshis and Shapras. The campaign is highly complex because nearly all the births take place at home in geographically isolated communities. A Candoshi baby being vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
