History
The first inhabitants of Peru were nomadic hunter-gatherers who lived in caves in Peru's coastal regions. The oldest site, Pikimachay cave, dates from 12,000 BC. Crops such as cotton, beans, squash and pepper chillis were planted around 4000 BC; later, advanced cultures such as the Chavín introduced weaving, agriculture and religion to the country. Around 300 BC, the Chavín inexplicably disappeared, but over the centuries several other cultures - including the Salinar, Nazca, Paracas Necropolis and Wari (Huari) - became locally important. By the early 15th century, the Inca empire had control of much of the area, even extending its influence into Colombia and Chile. Between 1526-28, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro explored Peru's coastal regions and, drawn by the riches of the Inca empire, returned to Spain to raise money and recruit men for another expedition to the country. Return he did, marching into Cajamarca, in northern Peru, before capturing, ransoming and executing the Inca emperor Atahualpa in 1533. Pizarro subsequently founded the city of Lima in 1535 but was assassinated six years later. The rebellion of the last Inca leader, Manco Inca, ended ingloriously with his beheading in 1572.

Machu Picchu "the lost city of the Incas" discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, is reached by a fascinating train journey from Cusco. The ruins continue to enchant visitors with their exquisite stonework, perched on precipitous slopes overlooking the Urubamba Valley.
The Nazca Lines are located in the Pampa region of Peru, the desolate plain of the Peruvian coast 400 Km. South of Lima, covering an area of approximately nearly 400 square miles of desert. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred figures are made of straight lines and geometric shapes most clearly visible from the air. They were supposedly built by an ancient civilization called the Nazca.

Translated by Katya Andrusz
"A truly amazing book, much more ambitious than its title would suggest. . . . Pathbreaking. . . . The best political analysis of nineteenth-century politics I have seen." Erick D. Langer, H-Net Reviews "Sparkling with fresh and sensible analyses. . . . New insights on topics that we thought we knew well already." Americas "Filled with previously untouched archival material and challenging interpretations. . . . One of the most important books written on the political history of nineteenth-century Peru in recent years." Hispanic American Historical Review In the mid-nineteenth-century, Peru underwent a profound transformation. As the world economy became increasingly integrated, a new trade-based ruling class emerged. Elections led to political mobilization, and those in positions of national authority found themselves forced to negotiate with regional power brokers and lower social classes. Central to this transformation was the creation of the Partido Civil, the country's first modern political party. Tracing its development, Ulrich Muecke revisits virtually every aspect of nineteenth-century Peruvian society.

BACKGROUND introducing the area
culture and customs
quotes about culture and customs key testimonies featuring culture and customs Anyone reading these interviews is left with a sense of a still vibrant culture. While many narrators emphasise the declining importance of tradition to recent generations, young and old alike describe with enthusiasm games, dances, songs, special foods, festivals, and other celebrations. Some are not as lavish as they used to be; others have been affected by the changes in the social and physical landscape. Modification is not new: several point out how the influx of outsiders who came to work in the mines brought new customs and music which were gradually absorbed into the local culture. One felt this was enriching; another that local custom lost out to "foreign" influence. Some customs date back to the Spanish colonial era; others are more purely Andean. Many festivities are connected to religion; others celebrate age-old aspects of rural life. And some combine the different elements. Despite the pollution of the land, the loss of livestock, and the decline of herding as a way of life, for example, people still celebrate their connection with the mountain: "Grandfather" or "the Great Shepherd". "The animals' feast is celebrated with Carnival in February and March. We begin with the first ritual which is taking a table up the mountain with an offering of coca, liquor, fruit and sweets. We take this offering to the mountain, the patron of the animals, because the mountain looks after the animals and all livestock-owners have absolute faith in him..." (Peru 30)

Kuntur Wasi Kuntur Wasi is located in northern Peru. It is the site of a ceremonial centre of the formative period (1200-50 BC) of ancient Andean civilization with an architectural complex and stone sculptures. Its importance was recognized in 1946 when Peruvian archaeologists found a dozen stone sculptures of the so-called Chavin style. In 1978, the Committee for the Defence of Kuntur Wasi Monument was formed in the village of Pueblo Nuevo. Thanks to the aid of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture of Japan, the Archaeological Mission of the University of Tokyo has been carrying out excavations and researches since 1988. They have found eight tombs associated with the most ancient gold art in the American continents and established a chronology of the site. The discovery of gold objects in 1989 led to the idea to constructing a museum in the village. The museum was built thanks to Japanese fundings and inaugurated in 1994. The site and the museum are managed by the villagers whose co-operation helped to protect the site against clandestine looting.

Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 1995. 531pp. This is an anthology in which the editors seek to present the "voices" of Peruvians regarding their country, as well as the analyses of outsiders who have studied Peru. The result is, as they put it, "a mixedfield, cross-disciplinary anthology" (p. 5) that spans a spectrum of epochs and topics. The volume provides an enhanced picture of Peruvian ethnohistory as it explores the complex interactions of power and culture over time. Consequently, the volume covers a lot of ground, from the pre-Inca civilizations, the Conquest and colonial rule, the republican period, advent of modem politics, and, finally, the break-up of the old order after 1968, which led, in turn, to the civil strife inspired by the Shining Path and ensuing terrorism of the past 15 years.

(February 15, 2001) Archaeologists have unearthed a series of tombs rich with treasures of an extinct Peruvian culture. The 1,500-year-old graves held five unusually tall young men surrounded by textiles, ceramics, llama skeletons, and decorative metal works. The remains are Moche, a culture that thrived on the desert-like coast of northern Peru between A.D. 100 and 800. A farming and fishing community, they constructed irrigation canals, pyramids, palaces, and temples. The origins of the Moche remain unknown, according to lead archaeologist Christopher Donnan. The skeletons, found during a 1997-99 National Geographic-funded expedition, may yield clues to their culture.

2005 award - major research project
This project aims to build on a previous project to locate archives and collections of sound materials on expressive culture (music, dance, festivals and oral traditions). The previous project only aimed to locate sound materials. It was later learned that numerous folklore scholars maintained large collections of old photographs and super 8 films. No one else is trying to locate and preserve these audiovisual collections. If there is no speedy action, these materials will be lost for good. There are numerous collections of audio tapes, video tapes, Super 8 film and photographs in danger, deteriorating, getting lost, or just being thrown away by the uninformed heirs of these collectors. Research trips have confirmed this, and a project aiming at the preservation of these collections is urgently needed. They remain stored in family homes in several regions of Peru, mostly in the capital city, Lima. Some of them are deposited in small provincial institutional archives without adequate conservation facilities and environment. for being surrounded by two mountain chains, the north coast, and the region of Cajamarca, frontier to Ecuador.

Brief, tothe-point information about the people, regions, culture and history. peru has a rich ethnic diversity. About 45% of the population is Indian.

The people of Peru
Marcel Stigter
Peru has a rich ethnic diversity. About 45% of the population is Indian. Most of these Indians are Quechua (descendants of the Inca's). The Quechua populate the highlands of the Sierra . A smaller group of Indians speak Aymara or Aymara-related languages. These people can be found in the Selva (the Amazon rainforests) and around Lake Titicaca . Although Spanish is the official language of Peru, Quechua is an official recognised second language.
Marcel Stigter

The second group are the mestizos. Mestizo is a mix between white and Indian, and they make out 42% of Peru's population. The mestizos live everywhere in the country, but are concentrated along the coastline and in the big Andean cities.
Train conductor using an old portable telephone to get orders. His radio cannot receive
signals in the deep valley between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Heinz Buehler
About 10% is white, mostly from Spanish descendants and concentrated along the coastline . Black and Asian make out 3% of the population; they too are concentrated in the coastal regions. Most blacks are descendants of African slaves. Asians (mainly Japanese and Chinese) are immigrants who came to Peru at the first half of the 19th century.
Every group has its own lifestyle. Along the coast and in the highland cities, the whites and mestizos live in a modern Western style. In vivid contrast to these settlements are the jungles of eastern Peru, the home of Indian tribes so isolated that their life-style resembles that of their ancestors 500 years ago. The Quechua Indians from the Sierra also have strong traditions which go back to the Inca times.

CULTURE
Since pre-Columbian times Peruvians have been divided by nature. From the arid deserts of the coast, the Andean Sierra rises up to 19,700 feet. The highlands comprise about a quarter of Peru's territory, but are home to about half of Peru's population. This mountain mass poses major problems for development and integration into a single society. The result is dramatic regional diversity, and considerable inequalities in services and living standards. Health, education and law enforcement programs are unevenly distributed across Peru.
