The decline of the Chavìn and Sechìn cultures around the 5th century BC gave rise to a number of distinctive regional cultures. Some of these, including the Saliner and the Paracas, are celebrated for artistic and technological advances such as kiln-fired ceramics and sophisticated weaving techniques. From the Paracas arose the Nazca, whose legacy includes the immense and cryptic Nazca Lines. However, the accomplish- ments of these and other early Peruvian civilizations seem today to pale in comparison to the robust pre-Columbian civilization of the Inca.
The most startling feature of the great Inca empire was its brevity. In 1430, the realm of the Inca consisted of little more than the river valley around Cuzco. Less than a century later, through conquest and a canny policy of incorporating the best features of the societies they subjugated, the Incas controlled a vast territory of almost 1 million square kilometersa dominion that extended from northwest Argentina to southern Colombia. The Incan capital, at Qosqo, was undoubtedly the richest city in all of the Americas, with temples literally sheathed in heavy gold plate. Although Qosqo's architecture remains only in fragments and foundations, the architectural accomplishment of the Inca's has survived intact at the astounding ceremonial centre of Machu Picchu.
In 1532, at the height of its power, the Inca empire was driven by a war of succession. In one of the great tragedies of history, it was at precisely this moment that Francisco Pizarro and his band of Spanish conquis- tadors arrived on the scene. Showing an uncanny ability to turn circumstances to his own advantage, Pizarro used deception and guile to gain a personal meeting with Atahualpa, the Inca ruler, whom he coolly assassinated. In the face of fierce resistance, Pizarro and his men seized Cuzco and sacked the city. Although the Incas continued to fight for the next several years, their empire had ended and Spanish rule had begun.

Peru, like many postcolonial nations, reflects diverse cultural identities derived from its rich historical, literary, and artistic formation. From Creole and indigenous literary texts to renowned contemporary works, the written word is deeply referenced in the multivocality of local and ethnic cultures. Textiles are important ritual objects, but also modes of communicating status and identity. The descendants of Inca artists adopted European forms that gave rise to the spectacular Cuzco School of Painting as early as the sixteenth century. More Kipling Road, P.O. Updated 93 days 23 hours 31 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Culture of Peru The culture of Peru was shaped by the relationship between Hispanic and Amerindian cultures. During pre-Columbian times, Peru was one of the major centers of artistic expression in The Americas , where Pre-Inca cultures , such as Moche , Paracas, Huari (Wari), Nazca Chimu , and Tiahuanaco developed high-quality pottery textiles jewelry , and sculpture . Drawing upon earlier cultures, the Incas continued to maintain these crafts but made even more impressive achievements in architecture. The mountain town of Machu Picchu and the buildings at Cuzco are excellent examples of Inca architectural design.

The Andes region expands through much of South America (including Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and North of Chile), and therefore innumerous quantities of rhythms, musical styles and melodies each stemming from particular areas fit under the term: "traditional Andean music." The most familiar of these rhythms, styles or melodies are the: Huayno, Sikuri, San Juanito, Carnavalito, Trote, Saya, Tuntunas, Huaylas, Yaravi, Marinera, Cueca, Pandilla, Llamerada, Cuyahuada, Bailecito, Pasillo, San Juan, Albaso, Diablada, Tondero, Samba, etc. The instruments that the natives use (and/or the different materials with which they make them) are also particular to specific areas, and are directly related to the natural elements at hand for the making of the instruments. While in one area the back of a charango might be made with the carcass of an armadillo, in another it might be made with the shell of a tortoise; while in one area the sikus flute (pan flute) might be made from thin and long bamboo, producing a windy sound, in another area it might be made with thick and wide bamboo, producing a full sound, or, while in one area a dried gourd (the Guiro) might be used for percussion, in another a dried bean pod (the Vaina) might serve instead; etc. Following is a partial list of native and string instruments used in Andean music:

    96. Nazca Lines And Culture
The Nazca Lines are located in the Pampa region of peru, the desolate plain of the Cahuachi is emerging as a treasure trove of the Nazcan culture.
    http://www.crystalinks.com/nazca.html
    NAZCA LINES
Stretching across the Nazca plains like a giant map or blueprint left by ancient astronauts, lie the famous Nazca Lines of Peru. Peru is associated with the Incan Civilization who many link with alien visitors who still interact with local people to this day. The Nazca Lines are an engima. No one has proof who built them or why. Since their discovery, the Nazca Lines have inspired fantastic explanations from ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens, a celestial calendar created by the ancient Nazca civilization putting the creation of the lines between 200 BC and 600 AD, used for rituals probably related to astronomy, to confirm the ayllus or clans who made up the population and to determine through ritual their economic functions held up by reciprocity and redistribution, or a map of underground water supplies. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity, as they were made and remade through out the whole prehispanic period, form the most impressive, as well as enigmatic, archeological group. Location The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the pampa (a large flat area of southern Peru). The desolate plain of the Peruvian coast which comprises the Pampas of San Jose (Jumana), Socos, El Ingenio and others in the province of Nasca, is 400 Km. South of Lima, covers an area of approximately 450 km2, of sandy desert as well as the slopes of the contours of the Andes. They cover nearly 400 square miles of desert. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred figures made of straight lines, geometric shapes most clearly visible from the air.

Located in northwestern South America between Ecuador and Chile, Peru is slightly smaller than the state of Alaska. The mighty Andes Mountains bisect the country, separating the lush Amazon River basin in the east and the coastal plain along the Pacific Ocean. Lima, Peru's largest city, also is its capital. "Peru at a Glance" Capital: Lima Size: 496,225 square miles. Slightly smaller than Alaska. Population: 27 million. Nearly one-third of the country's people live in Lima. System of Government: Constitutional Republic President: Alejandro Toledo (President Elect) Religion: Roman Catholic Languages: Spanish, Quechua, Aymara (unofficial) Life expectancy: 70 years Interesting Fact: 72 percent of Peru's population lives in urban areas. Nearly 500 years ago, the quest for silver and gold brought the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro to present-day Peru. High in the Andes, Pizarro's small army encountered the Inca, a civilization that held the conquistador's coveted treasure. Strong as they were, the Incas could not repel the Europeans, and within 40 years their empire was destroyed. Spanish colonists soon migrated to the coast, where they established their own system of government, law and commerce. After a series of rebellions, Peru declared its independence from Spain in 1824. However, it wasn't until 1879, after a long conflict, that Spain recognized Peru's sovereignty. In 1873, Chile defeated Peru in the War of the Pacific, resulting in a period of economic and political turmoil that continued well into the 20th century.
