On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping culture of Peru Wikipedia culture of Peru The culture of Peru was shaped by the relationship between Hispanic and Amerindian cultures. During pre-Columbian times, Peru was one of the major centers of artistic expression in The Americas , where Pre-Inca cultures , such as Chavn Moche Paracas Huari (Wari), Nazca Chimu , and Tiahuanaco developed high-quality pottery textiles jewelry , and sculpture . Drawing upon earlier cultures, the Incas continued to maintain these crafts but made even more impressive achievements in architecture. The mountain town of Machu Picchu and the buildings at Cuzco are excellent examples of Inca architectural design. Peru has passed through various intellectual stagesfrom colonial Hispanic culture to European Romanticism after independence. The early 20th century brought "indigenismo," expressed in a new awareness of Indian culture. Since World War II , Peruvian writers, artists, and intellectuals such as Cesar Vallejo and Jose Maria Arguedas have participated in worldwide intellectual and artistic movements, drawing especially on U.S. and European trends.

Ancient Earth Religions
Medicine Women
by Carolina Carlessi When Carolina Carlessi moved from Peru to Spokane, Washington, she left behind a culture that trusts intuition, superstition and personal healing. She is adjusting to Western culture's reliance on reason and science. But she knows deep inside that modern science owes much to the world's mystical women. I don't call it magic, folk medicine, cosmic energy or superstition. I just live with it It has been with the women of my family for generations, and I have been blessed with its influence since the moment I was born. My life started in Lima, Peru. My father was on a business trip and my young mother was alone in an apartment, about to give birth. Frightened, she shouted loud shouts, hoping they'd pierce the walls and get to somebody's ears. She heard knocking at the door, but couldn't move. After some minutes, a woman, "as big and square as an armoire," broke open the door with her shoulder and flew into the apartment. Mamita Carolina was a healer, a medicine woman who had arrived from her village 300 miles away. The night before, while listening to the waves, she had heard her niece's cries and had boarded the next bus to Lima, not even knowing my mother was pregnant.

Peru's Culture
The Heart of the Inca Empire
The Native American heritage of Peru is one of the richest in South America. Although Spain gave Peru its language, religion, and rulers, the civilization of the Inca has left its traces throughout Peruvian culture. Archaeological excavations have uncovered monumental remains of Native American societies. In contrast to these settlements are the jungles of eastern Peru, where more isolated groups of Native Americans retain lifestyles similar to those of their ancestors. Music
Literature
Art
Peru boasts one of the largest varieties of arts and crafts on Earth. The excellence of Peruvian artisans can be seen in the harmony of the geometric designs in weavings, the minute portraits of peasant farming life on the carved gourds called mates burilados, the cultural mestizaje or blend in the colorful retablo boxed scenes. There are also the finely carved Huamanga stone sculptures, the complex Baroque nature of the wooden carvings, the beauty of gold and silver relics and the many forms that pottery has shaped the clay into pottery.
In addition to the many monumental Inca ruins, many examples of colonial architecture survive, particularly religious and public buildings located mostly in Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco, and Trujillo. In the Andean area the Spaniards often built on top of Inca remains, and in Cuzco one can see both types of construction. In colonial buildings, Spanish and indigenous modes often fuse, blending into what was called the Creole style. Moorish influence, which traveled from Arab North Africa to Spain and then to the Americas, is visible in what is known as the Mudejar style. Lima has many examples of fine modern architecture.

Peru - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Peruvian culture, like the culture of many American countries, is a mix of native and European art forms. That's because Peru was settled by European explorers in the 16th century who brought with them new art forms.
Before the Europeans arrived, Incas ruled the land of Peru. The Incas were a group of natives who had mastered many art forms. In fact, they were so good at many art forms that parts of their culture were more advanced than European culture when they arrived. One of these art forms was pottery.
Pottery is the art of molding clay into shapes and letting it dry and harden. Pottery has been used to create sculptures. It has also been used to create practical things, like pots, cups, and dishes. The art of pottery in Peru was very advanced even before the Incas took control of Peru.
A group of people in the north called the Moche developed the use of the press mold. A press mold is a carved-out form in which wet clay was pressed. As the clay dried, it pulled away from the mold and was removed. The Moche used hard ceramic harder than clay for their press molds. Why would pottery makers use press molds? For two reasons: one, use of a press mold made making pottery quick. It doesn't take much time or skill to press clay into a mold. Two, because of this speed, much more pottery could be made with a press mold than could be by hand.

56. Peru - An Introduction

PERU
Introduction
We can assure your majesty that it is so beautiful and has such fine buildings that it would even be remarkable in Spain.
-Francisco Pizarro, describing Cuzco in a letter to King Charles V of Spain.
P eru is South America's third largest country, covering 1,285,215 sq. km., and can be divided into three distinct geographic regions. The best known of these is the central high sierra of the Andes, with its massive peaks, steep canyons, and extraordinary pre Columbian archaeological sites. The Andes are still one of the world's most unstable mountain ranges, with frequent earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Despite such instability, the Andes are also the site of the most fascinating pre-Columbian cities of South America-like the great city of the clouds, Machu Picchu.
The Andes are by no means the only region to visit in Peru. Also of great interest is Peru's narrow, lowland coastal region, a northern extension of the Atacama Desert. Although the Atacama is generally known as the most arid region on the planet, the climate along Peru's shores is made cooler and less dry by La Garuùa, a dense fog created by the collision of the frigid waters of the Humboldt Current with the heated sands of the Atacama. Lima, Trujillo, and Chiclayo, three of Peru's major population centres, are located along this coastal desert.
Peru's third great region is the dense forest that surrounds the headwaters of the Amazon beneath the eastern slopes of the Andes. This part of the country is so inaccessible that only the most adventurous and intrepid travelers should attempt to penetrate its mysterious emerald depths. In fact, the region's capital of Iquitos, a city of 400,000, is accessible only by air or by boat up the Amazon.

CULTURE, CLASS, AND HIERARCHY IN SOCIETY
Another separate dimension of the "Indian problem" so widely discussed by Peruvian essayists has to do with the natives living in the Selva and high Selva, or Montaña, regions of the country. The tribal peoples have a tenuous and generally unhappy relationship with Peruvians and the state, evolved from long experience along the tropical frontier. The Incas and their predecessors ventured only into the fringes of the region called Antisuyu, and the Spanish followed their pattern. The inhabitants were known collectively as savages ( chunchos ). In documents they are politely referred to as jungle people ( selvícolas or selváticos The tribal peoples of the lower Selva along the major rivers have endured the stress and danger of contact with outside forces longer than those groups located at the upper reaches of the streams. It is in these "refuge areas" that most of the present tribal populations survive (see fig. 6
