What is "ecological engineering"? The term, "ecological engineering," was first coined by Howard T. Odum in 1962. Howard Odum is now professor emeritus at the University of Florida, where his work in systems ecology has flourished. Ecological engineering, he wrote, is "those cases where the energy supplied by man is small relative to the natural sources but sufficient to produce large effects in the resulting patterns and processes." (H.T. Odum, 1962, "Man and Ecosystem" Proceedings, Lockwood Conference on the Suburban Forest and Ecology. Bulletin Connecticut Agric. Station) Another definition that follows from that relates to ecosystem management by human society (Center for Wetlands, University of Florida) : "Ecological engineering is the design of sustainable ecosystems that integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both. It involves the design, construction and management of ecosystems that have value to both humans and the environment. Ecological engineering combines basic and applied science from engineering, ecology, economics, and natural sciences for the restoration and construction of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The field is increasing in breadth and depth as more opportunities to design and use ecosystems as interfaces between technology and environment are explored." Another definition seeks to use the ecological paradigm to construct ecologies to solve vexing world-class problems, such as pollution:

of George. We are an NGO/CBO that has been operating in the Southern Cape
for three years. We have reached over 600 people in courses relevant to
sustainable development and especially agriculture in this time.
Our focus is Permaculture, Nutrition and HIV/AIDS and Primary Health Care
through herbs and nutrition. We also demonstrate natural, low-cost housing
and low-input solutions to sustainability issues at our 2000 square metre
site.
We have elected to host a Sustainable Living Expo to expose the broad public
to sustainability options and secondly, to raise funds to complete our training centre. Our aim is to invite a broad range of exhibitors who can inform all sectors of society on sustainability options ranging from solar power, composting and organic production to recycled craft. We aim for a blend of the technological and the domestic. We are also inviting numerous environmental

Agroforestry Practices
Tim Snell Agroforestry Specialist Kerr Center Publ. F2000 Agroforestry is the deliberate integration, in space or time, of woody perennials with herbaceous crops and/or animals on the same land management unit (Steppler and Nair, 1987, p. 265). This can be simplified to the practice of growing trees with agricultural crops and/or livestock on the same piece of land (Anderson, et al., 1991). For agroforestry practices to be widely accepted and integrated into existing agricultural enterprises, farmers must be able to accomplish them safely, efficiently, and with tools already available on the farm. Agroforestry practices must be friendly to the farmer, budget, and land. Many tree species are used in a variety of shapes, forms, and configurations and produce benefits as agroforestry components to adjacent crops or livestock. Trees provide many benefits including lumber and forest products; shade and wind protection for crops, livestock, and buildings; erosion control; water and nutrient cycling; and wildlife food and habitat.
AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES
Windbreaks
Windbreaks are not a new idea. The planting of windbreaks has a long and successful history in this country. Between 1934 and 1943, as part of a conservation program conceived and vigorously promoted by Franklin D. Roosevelt, about 19,000 miles of windbreaks were planted on 33,000 farms and ranches for soil and water conservation.

B. Agriculture and Food Security i. I ntegrated youth in agric employment programme 60 Youth (30 males and 30 females) from 10 communities will be trained, organised into cooperatives and established in rabbit production, grass cutter production, snail production, mushroom production and vegetable production. The selected trade areas will create employment for the youth, and improve nutrition and food security in the communities. ii. Pilot district bee-keeping project Bee-keeping in the district is almost non existent and people use all sorts of means to harvest honey from the wild, causing bush fires and deforestation. The people expressed the interest in rearing bees for honey and for incomes. 30 selected youth from 10 communities will be trained and established in commercial bee-keeping. They will supply honey at farm gate prices to these communities, contributing to food security in the district. Bees colonize hives quicker during the dry seasons. We therefore expect to conduct the training between March and July to establish the bee colonies before the minor rainy season. iii Pilot community fishpond projects 5 communities in the district will be assisted to establish one community fish pond each to improve their protein intakes. These ponds will be owned and managed by the community and 2 people will be nominated by each community to be trained to maintain the ponds. this is expected to improve food security in the communities since a family size of about 8 members eats only two small fish each day.

Jack bean
From: rnmowbray@worldnet.att.net
Date sent: 19 March 1999 (via New Crops LISTSERV) Jack bean is grown as a cover crop by small farmers in many sustainable agriculture programs. I know of several groups working with Jack bean in Nicaragua and suspect that it is also used in many other Latin American countries as well as Africa and Asia. The Nicaragua groups could not produce enough seed for their own needs when I was last there in 1996, but that situation might have changed by now. I believe that the Nicaragua programs obtained seed from Honduras to get their programs started. I have advised my contact in Nicaragua of your interest just in case they are not on the New Crops LISTSERV. If they have seed available, or know of a source, I suspect that they will contact you directly. Robert N. Mowbray
