Three U.S. dental degreed students are accepted annually through the Postdoctoral Dental School Matching Program. A stipend is offered. An additional highly qualified student who is foreign trained is accepted through an Educational Grant. Training is directed to future Board Certification by the American Board of Periodontology. Board Certified instructors oversee training in three major areas: academics, research, and clinical periodontics. The academic program places emphasis on the biological sciences which are critical to a well- founded rationale for the delivery of periodontal therapy. A thorough knowledge of the periodontal literature, both classic and current, is stressed. A variety of courses in surgical anatomy, bone and connective tissue biology, oral pathology, histopathology, technological assessment, and the biomedical sciences prepare the student to render efficient and comprehensive dental care. Interdisciplinary seminars are offered and students are encouraged to coordinate dental care with other specialties. Academic proficiency is tested through Case Presentations, Oral Literature Examinations, and Mock Board Presentations. An extensive and comprehensive course in Practice Management helps prepare the student for a successful career in periodontics.

Dental Procedure May Reduce Risk of Premature Births
CHICAGO – August 26, 2003 – A non-surgical dental procedure may reduce the risk of preterm birth in pregnant women with periodontal disease, according to new study findings. Nearly 12 percent of babies in this country are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy), which increases their risk of death and lasting disabilities, such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, lung and gastrointestinal problems, and vision and hearing loss.

A Strong Educational Background
"My education is ongoing — especially in the study of the causes and treatment of gum disease. In light of this, I regularly attend continuing-education courses to keep current on the latest procedures. For example, many treatments I focus on are nonsurgical, in which I use a state-of-the-art piece of equipment called the phase-contrast microscope to identify bacteria. I try to resolve as much of the disease as possible by means of the patient's effective oral hygiene measures, thorough cleanings, and by using antibacterial solutions." COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY
Graduate Periodontics Program The Department of Periodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry offers a three-year post-graduate program in periodontics leading to a specialty certificate and an M.S. degree. The primary goal and focus of the program is to produce a relatively small number of highly trained specialists who are not only excellent clinicians, but are also well educated in relevant basic sciences and in principles of scientific research and investigation. Graduate students are required to complete an original research project and thesis. The program is fully accredited and graduates are eligible for examination by the American Board of Periodontology. At the present time, all of the full-time faculty in the Department of Periodontics are diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology. The starting date for the graduate periodontics program is July 1st of each year and encompasses a full-time 36-month course of study. The program provides an integrated course of study that encompasses a variety of clinical, didactic and research experiences. The clinical experiences available in the graduate periodontics include a broad range of periodontal treatment, including the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Residents work closely with the other graduate programs at the College of Dentistry and also assist in the training of dental students and dental hygiene students. Residents spend all three summers in hospital rotations at HCA Presbyterian Hospital, and include experiences in history and physical diagnosis, emergency medicine, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and anesthesiology. Upon graduation, our residents are well prepared for careers in clinical practice and academic dentistry.

      What are periodontal diseases?
The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal diseases, also called gum diseases, are serious bacterial infections that destroy the gums and the surrounding tissues of the mouth. Dental caries, or cavities, in the tooth affect only the tooth. Periodontal disease affects the bones around the tooth, the gums, the coverings of the roots of the teeth, and the membrane of the tooth. A dentist specializing in periodontal disease is called a periodontist. If the inflammation is left untreated, the disease will continue and the underlying bones around the teeth will dissolve and will no longer be able to hold the teeth in place.

Gum Disease
What is gum disease?
Gum disease or periodontal disease, a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue, is the major cause of about 70 percent of adult tooth loss, affecting three out of four persons at some point in their life. What causes gum disease?
Bacterial plaque - a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth - is recognized as the primary cause of gum disease. Specific periodontal diseases may be associated with specific bacterial types. If plaque isn't removed each day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into a rough, porous substance called calculus (also known as tartar). Toxins (poisons) produced and released by bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. These toxins cause the breakdown of the fibers that hold the gums rightly to the teeth, creating periodontal pockets, which fill with even more toxins and bacteria. As the disease progresses, pockets extend deeper and the bacteria moves down until the bone that holds the tooth in place is destroyed. The tooth eventually will fall out or require extraction. Do some factors increase the risk of developing periodontal diseases?

  • I was told a couple of years ago that I have mild to moderate periodontal disease on lower left quadrant...more now I'm sure...but my most immediate question is about an area behind a front bottom tooth (just to my right). Down below the teeth, towards the bottom of the jaw bone I guess but not on the floor of the mouth, is a white, round, sort of flat bump on the gum. It hurts and I just noticed it. Though the pain in the general area has been there off and on, more on lately, daily, and instictively massage my chin/jaw area below the spot to try to relieve. I take pain killers with tylenol in them for unrelated problems and can really tell when it wears off. I know there is no substitute for going in, but wondering if the white smooth, flat, sore spot (nothing comes out) could be the prelude to an abcess or is an abcess and if so, how much time do I have before it gets bad to the point of serious complications....not that I'd wait that long. Visitor from California (answer) I had a severe infection in my jaw bone two years ago. My doctor prescribed antibotics. Since then I have pain in my teeth and thus far have lost 5 teeth. My teeth basically begin raising up out of the gum line and then finally work their way out. The teeth and the roots all in one piece. The teeth look healthy as in there are no cavities or discoloration. I am concerned as to whether a dentist could pull all my teeth for dentures. I see no reason to have a partial plate done at this time and then have more teeth fall out later. Have you heard of this happening and what do you recommend having done. ...Visitor from Oklahoma
