Gum (Periodontal) Disease
Periodontal disease (infection of the gum tissue and bones surrounding teeth) is an increasing health risk which will not go away by itself, but requires professional treatment. Our Periodontal specialists are dedicated to saving teeth. Please call the Department of Periodontics clinic for information or for an appointment ( What Is It?
Gum (periodontal) disease is an infection that is a major cause of tooth loss in adults . Because gum disease is usually painless and develops slowly, a person may not be aware that the infection exists. Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria (germs) that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can eventually damage the gums and the bone surrounding the teeth. Bleeding Gums Are Not Normal!
In the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, the gums become red, swell, and bleed easily. The disease is still reversible at this stage, and can usually be eliminated by careful daily brushing and flossing. In the more advanced stages of gum disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth become seriously damaged. If the disease is left untreated, it can eventually lead to loss of teeth.
What are the signs of gum disease?

Overview Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis. Some factors increase the risk of developing periodontal disease:
  • Tobacco smoking or chewing Systemic diseases such as diabetes Some types of medication such as steroids, some types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives

Periodontics, Prevention, and Geriatrics includes the disciplines of periodontics, dental hygiene, geriatrics, behavioral sciences, oral health, and community dentistry.
Periodontics is concerned with establishing and maintaining health for the structures that provide support for the teeth. The educational program is designed to help students develop the ability to instruct patients in preventing periodontal diseases, diagnosing and treating patients with gingivitis and moderate periodontitis, and recognizing and refering patients who require specialist care. The dental hygiene program is a component of this department and is concerned with providing a wide range of preventive oral health care services.
Issues related to the special needs of the geriatric dental patient are addressed in a number of courses in the predoctoral curriculum.
