NEWS Bluecoat embarks on major £9.75 million restoration, renovation and expansion scheme: temporary closure of building from February 2005
After almost a century as a thriving venue for the contemporary arts, Bluecoat Arts Centre is about to embark upon a major capital programme that will greatly enhance and expand the building, securing the future of one of Liverpool’s best-loved and most distinctive architectural gems, and strengthening Bluecoat as a leading centre of creativity.
The building closed to the public at the beginning of February so that work could begin on the scheme. One of the building’s tenants, the Bluecoat Display Centre craft gallery and shop, will however stay open, with access from College Lane.
£9.25 million has already been secured, principally from Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund and Northwest Development Agency , as well as local and national trusts, foundations and other organisations.
The project has three main strands:
  • Restore and preserve the fabric of this Grade One listed building , the oldest in the city centre, to make it a unique heritage attraction
Re-organise and improve existing areas , including the foyer, garden, artists’ studios, offices, café and shops, to make the building as accessible as possible to everyone
Create excellent new gallery, performance and workshop spaces

Each of us is responsible for our own destiny As a K to 12 school, Hunter School of the Performing Arts offers a comprehensive curriculum with a performing and related arts speciality for both primary and secondary students. Students come from the Hunter Region, the Central Coast and beyond, and entry into the school is through audition. The school has undergone a major curriculum review and change to accommodate its new direction towards becoming fully performing arts. This means that all incoming students will follow through with at least one performing arts subject through their secondary schooling. It also means that new courses are being developed to accommodate a variety of talents and interests in the performing arts and related areas. There is a Theatre Arts course available to students in Stage 5 (years 9 and 10) and the school has piloted a new Vocational Education course in the Entertainment Industry I Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12.) Modules in areas such as sound and lighting, front of house and stage management are included and lead to accreditation. Provision is now made in the audition process for prospective new students to apply not as performers but as students with talent in related areas such as sound and lighting, set design/construction.

This is our 31st Anniversary! The Lithopolis Area Fine Arts Association (LAFAA) continues to bring a varied cultural program series to the area served by the Wagnalls Memorial Library. LAFAA was founded in 1973 to encourage the development of visual and performing arts in our community. Over the years it has sponsored art exhibitions, art festivals, awards to local artists, films from the classics, the annual Performing Arts Series, and Artists in the Schools workshops. The series programs and workshops have included light and serious drama, dance groups, mime, a puppeteer and a wide variety of musical events ranging from the classical to bluegrass. The Association is administered by a Governing Board of fifteen to twenty-five members elected from within the community. Programs are presented at the Wagnalls Memorial Library . The Board cannot handle all of the work required for all of the programs. Help is needed from as many members of the community as possible.

"Preserving culture, one generation at a time" DRAMA "Artistic ways of knowing the worldfrom poetry and literature to music and dance to the visual artsenable human beings to find meaning and purpose. The arts represent humanity's irrepressible search for significance and worth through the power of the imagination. Steps to College home The Art of Choosing a College:
Tips for Visual and Performing Arts Students Students who wish to study visual or performing arts have some unique challenges and options during their college search. If you're considering a major in music, art, dance, or drama, read on for some advice from the experts. A Difference of Degree
Prospective arts majors have two degree options: a bachelor of arts (BA) degree with a major in the arts and a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) for artists/performers or bachelor of music (BM) for musicians. The BA degree is the typical liberal arts degreestudents who major in English, history, and other humanities majors also earn BA degrees. The BFA or BM degree is more focused and intense. "There is a world of difference between a BA in music and a BM in music," says Anthony Celentano, school counselor/military advisor at Pope John XXIII High School (NJ), who holds a BM and MM (master of music). "A BA in music will be pretty much like any other BA degreelots of courses outside of your major with approximately 12 or so courses in your major. That's not a lot of music for the student who is looking for an intense musical experience. A BM in music essentially is a professional degree. Within my 120+ credits for my BM, only 36 were liberal arts courses. The remainder were music or degree-related courses: private lessons, conducting classes, music history, music theory, etc." Which degree you choose depends on your college and career goals. If you have a high degree of commitment to your art and desire an intense, often competitive college experience, a BFA or BM might be right for you. If you would rather study a variety of subjects along with your arts major, a BA may be the way to go.
