"I think of The Yard as my artistic nurturing ground... The design of the residency is perfect for the full use of an artist's creative talents."
David Dorfman
- Choreographer
Photo by Betsy Corsiglia The Yard is a performing artists' colony tucked between hills and meadows in Chilmark, on the island of Martha's Vineyard . Its' setting is simple - three houses and a barn, now converted to a studio and a theater, surrounded by grass, woods and stone walls. When The Yard was founded in 1973 by dancer and choreographer, Patricia N. Nanon, her vision was to create a space for contemporary dance artists to develop new works in a supportive environment. The Yard's mission is to support the creation of new work by providing choreographers and dancers with housing, stipends, rehearsal space, public performance, artistic guidance when needed, and the greatest luxury of all - uninterrupted time to explore and experiment. DiAnn Ray, Executive Director

Early Piano Practice Gets Brain on Course
A study reports that practicing the piano in early childhood boosts the brain. "Childhood is the best time in life to boost the brain's so-called white matter, according to the study, and boost the pyramidal tract, which is a major pathway of the central nervous system, transmitting signals between the brain and the pianist's fingers. The scientists, who investigated the brains of eight concert pianists in their 30s who started practicing as young children, found that the pyramidal tract is more structured in pianists than in non-musicians."
    Sim Civics

Today, thanks to ever more sophisticated software, urban planning itself has increasingly come to resemble a SimCity-style public-policy game. Since the game's debut, the maturing technology known as Geographical Information Systems (GIS)software for synthesizing database, mapping, and modeling datahas supplanted the paper blueprint roll as the urban planner's dominant tool, enabling planners to map over a geographic region everything from gas lines to transit systems to weather patterns. But it's not just professionals who have their hands on the technology."
