GLENN GOULD, that enigmatic Canadian musical icon, is the subject of dance and theatre productions this year. Ottawa's Great Canadian Theatre Company capped its "Renegade Heroes" season with a run of David Young's Glenn in May. Glenn premiered in 1992 at Toronto's Necessary Angel. The play enjoys a long run this summer at the Stratford Festival - fittingly, since Gould was once music director there. Rod Beattie, Richard McMillan, Paul Dunn and Duncan Ollerenshaw team up to portray the many facets of Gould. Structure is aided by Young's use of Bach's Goldberg Variations which Gould recorded twice - at the beginning and at the end of his career. To Young, the two recordings form natural bookends to Gould's career and to his complexity. "When you listen to them side-by-side, you can hear a whole life in between." Richard Rose directs.

10 Aug 2005
The Orange County Performing Arts Center has posted a surplus for the 19th consecutive year. The surplus for the 2004-05 season was $359,014, up $73,902 from last season, against operating expenses of $41.2 million. Paul F. Folino, who completed his three-year term as board chairman yesterday, said, "These positive year-end figures are extremely encouraging and send a message that the Orange County Performing Arts Center is in a position of strength as it moves into its 20th year and the completion of its new venues. The history of the center is a record of responsible fiscal and artistic planning, one that is enviable in the world of cultural institutions. It is a well-run organization, blessed with a talented board and staff who are dedicated to fulfilling the center's mission. And certainly our greatest asset is the loyal and generous community that supports the center." Ticket revenue for the season was more than $22 million, with performances by London’s Royal Ballet and a production of

... Printer-friendly London Performing-Arts Organizations Report Mostly Steady Attendance After Terrorist Attacks By Emily Quinn
28 Jul 2005
Performing-arts organizations in London are reporting varied impacts on ticket sales and attendance after the terrorist attacks on July 7 and the aborted attack on July 21, the London Guardian reports. The Royal Opera House, according to Chris Millard, director of publicity, has not felt the effects of the attacks in terms of ticket sales, because the season books so far in advance. Attendance does not seem to have been affected either. “Theoretically,” Millard told the Guardian , people who have booked might let us know that they are no longer coming, but we haven’t experienced that.” Millard said that one thing that has been affected by the attacks is security at Covent Garden, which has been heightened. At Sadler’s Wells, according to marketing director Kingsley Jayasekera, ticket sales are down, but they were down before July 7. In fact, Jayasekera said, a recent performance of a collaborative work by choreographer Akram Khan and artist Antony Gormley, sold to a near-full house and half of those tickets were sold after July 7. The BBC Proms concerts are sold out, but director Nicholas Kenyon has noticed a decrease in last-minute sales. “Casual seat sales tend to go to people from out of London,” Kenyon said, “and we’re perceiving a reluctance on the part of that audience to come into the capital and perhaps to travel on its public transport.”

PERFORMING ARTS NETWORK (article first published : 2001-07-23)
What started as an informal discussion in March among a group of individuals concerned with the state of the performing arts in the country, culminated in June in the successful launches of the Performing Arts Network (PANSA) in the country’s three major centres. The main aim of PANSA is to provide a national forum and organisational base for performing arts practitioners, creative artists working within the performing arts field (writers, composers, choreographers, directors, etc), technical and stage workers, designers, administrators, educators, organisations, institutions and service providers. Following a similar format, each launch started with panel discussion on the topic Our vision for the future of the performing arts followed by the adoption of a resolution to establish a regional chapter of PANSA, and the election of a steering committee to co-ordinate the work of PANSA in the region. Jay Pather (dance educator and artistic director of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre) chaired the launch of the KZN chapter of PANSA attended by about 50 people at the Centre for Documentation on June 23. Jerry Pooe (director: Eager Artists), and Mark Hawkins (artistic director Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company), were panellists and the meeting generated much constructive discussion and many concrete suggestions.

PERFORMING ARTS SURVEY (article first published : 2002-10-18)
Over the couple of months, Durban arts practitioners and many members of the public have been offering their input to a survey sponsored by the Bartel Arts Trust which aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the performing arts in Durban. The survey has as its theme "What's Right with the Arts in Durban? What's Wrong with the Arts in Durban? And do we know why?". So far, the public has been approached in various shopping centres and at the Hilton Arts and Awesome Africa festivals The survey is conducted in association with Illa Thompson and Publicity Matters with the support of the KZN branch of the Performing Arts Network of SA (PANSA). The end result of the survey will shed light on many unanswered questions in the industry from the public's perspective. The public questionnaires coupled with information obtained from arts practitioners will be available in a data format for information to all interested people. Questionnaires are now available in many libraries in KZN and those wishing to support the performing arts and offer their opinions are urged to visit their local library and complete a questionnaire.
