The backstage drama is worthy of an opera: On the heels of its artistically successful 25th anniversary season, the Opéra de Montréal has cancelled the company's much anticipated premiere of Stravinky's Oedipus Rex, which would have run this February. "We ran a deficit of $1.5-million [in 2004-2005]," says OdeM chairman André Laurin. "The budgetary forecast for the fiscal year 2005-2006 with the planned program would have resulted in another large deficit."...The Opéra de Montréal's high standards have consistently ranked it in North America's top 20 opera companies. But Laurin says, "If we could count on grants at the level received by our counterparts, we would have avoided an accumulated deficit in 2004-2005 and there would be no deficit this season." A dance teacher worries over the future of his studio and performing arts center at Park Lane Mall. By Gabriel Doss Tisto Chapman sits in the chairs donated by the Peppermill Hotel Casino.
Tisto Chapman's face lights up when he talks about the Creative Performing Arts Center he opened nine weeks ago. He envisions performances on a stage built in the middle of the room and dance studios around the outside of the stage in his space at Park Lane Mall. But his dream of a performing arts center may not happen. Chapman says that an antique store in Park Lane Mall wants his spot, which would leave him with a studio one-fourth the size. "We are in a little trouble to hold onto the place," Chapman says. But finances are strained for the mall on the corner of South Virginia Street and Plumb Lane. The antique shop owner is reportedly offering much more money than what Chapman now pays for his dance studio, which Chapman says is $2,000 a month. Park Lane Mall Property Manager Vicky Harley says she wants to see Chapman survive but isn't convinced that he can fill a 20,000-square-foot space.

The Performing Arts Program is founded on the premise that the experience, understanding, and appreciation of artistic expression give value, meaning, and enjoyment to people’s lives.
Its mission is to support artistic expression and its enjoyment through grantmaking aimed at the sustainability of high-quality San Francisco Bay Area organizations and to achieve this through the following broad objectives:
  • Stimulating increased access to and participation in the arts
  • Increasing exposure to and understanding of diverse cultural expressions
  • Enhancing opportunities for creative expression for both artists and audiences
  • Promoting long-term organizational health
In order to reach these objectives, the Performing Arts Program has a strategy that includes:
  • Long-term investment through ongoing, multiyear operating support with the shared goal of artistic/programmatic vitality and organizational health
  • Use of mutually agreed upon, individually tailored incentives, when needed, to leverage organizational change such as endowment, capital, cash reserve, and challenge grants to enhance the stability of arts organizations
  • Addressing the challenges and opportunities that a fluctuating, highly competitive Bay Area real estate market has created for arts organizations that need affordable administrative, rehearsal, and performance space
