Annual/Perennial Garden
The Annual/Perennial Garden is among the most colorful areas at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. It is at its prime when the summer annuals peak, but winter annuals and an assortment of herbaceous perennials create interest throughout the year. The garden includes specialty (theme) collections such as plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies and a traditional perennial border. The All-America Selections Display Garden is located in the Annual/Perennial Garden. New and recent AAS award winners are displayed in this section of the garden. Flowers for drying are grown in an adjacent area, providing materials for workshops on wreath-making and dried flower crafts. A nearby area devoted to children's gardening provides a place for fun hands-on learning. The Garden offers a variety of classes for children on weekends, after school, and during the summer. Children visiting this area will enjoy the colorful displays and unique ways in which plants are grown.

Perennials Creating a flower garden with perennials, selection planting tips.

You can't beat perennials
for glorious color all season long
When you start gardening with perennials, it's easy to think that all you have to do is get your plants into the ground, and with the exception of weeding, watering and cutting back, your garden will be done. But here's what really happens: in the first year your new plants are underwhelming – the clumps small, the flowers sparse. By the second year, your perennials have grown fuller and have more flowers, but in the third season – watch out – your plants look like they're on steroids, and you look like an accomplished gardener. After that, many plants get bigger each season, while the odd one confounds you by doing a disappearing act. Responding to the inevitable change is your challenge as a flower gardener. Veteran gardeners say that
no flower garden is ever truly finished. When I was starting out (at the garden shown here), my husband joked that my plants should have been on wheels because I moved them so much. *It does get better:
I don't move my plants much these days and
that's a relief.*

Gardens with Style
Choosing a garden style is a little like getting dressed. You might choose a "tie and jacket" look for your garden, using formal, symmetrical plantings, sheared hedges, and rows of flowering plants. Or you might be more of a "blue jeans" gardener, opting for an informal layout with rambling plantings. Or maybe you are somewhere in between.
Formal or Casual?
Just like your closet, which may contain formal wear and sweatshirts, and everything in between, you may choose a blend of styles for your gardens. For example, you might like a more formal look for the foundation plantings around your house, where shearing keeps hedges and shrubs inbounds, well-behaved perennials are carefully mulched, and annuals are planted in a symmetrical pattern. Your island bedsthose surrounded by a sea of lawnmight be a little less formal and consist of shrubs and perennials allowed to grow more naturally, with perhaps some annuals tucked into the spaces to add season-long color. Edging and mulching keep the bed looking tidy.

Getting your Perennial Gardens
Ready for Fall and Winter Phyllis Heuerman
Frederick County Master Gardener Program Fall is a very satisfying time of the year for the perennial gardener. We still have a good 6 to 8 weeks of beautiful fall gardens ahead of us. Perennials that drooped and faded in the heat of summer may rebloom and the fall-blooming plants are in their full glory. However, it is time to begin thinking about winter and preparing your perennial beds accordingly. Now is a good time to be dividing perennials that have exceeded their space, have formed tight clumps with diminished bloom, or have developed a dead space in the center of the plant. Although leaves may become damaged or transplants may appear misshapen, all of this will be gone when the plants reappear in the spring. Good candidates for division are hostas, Daylilies (Hermocallis), black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia), Siberian and Japanese iris (Iris sibirica and Iris ensata) and ornamental grasses. Try to do these divisions by about 4 weeks before the fall frost date, which is October 15 in Frederick County. This will give the roots time to reestablish themselves before winter sets in. Fall is also a good time to plant new perennials, particularly bare root plants. By now you should have ordered or be ready to order from your fall plant catalogs. Local nurseries and home stores are also excellent sources of perennials for fall planting. By planting in the fall instead of the spring you are likely to have larger plants with better bloom in the next year. Some plants that lend themselves to fall planting include daylilies, purple or white coneflowers (Echinacea), asiatic and oriental lilies (Lilium), bleeding hearts (Dicentra), lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria) and the biennial foxglove (Digitalis).

107. Tips On Summer Care Of Perennial Gardens

http://www.emmitsburg.net/gardens/articles/frederick/2003/perennial_gardens.htm
Tips on Summer Care of Perennial Gardens Phyllis Heuerman
Frederick County Master Gardener Program Although many people are not aware of this, one of the best things you can do to keep your perennial garden looking well groomed all summer is to prune the plants regularly. This has been especially important this year when many plants grew up to twice their normal size due to all of the rain we had this spring. Pruning can mean anything from deadheading, which is removing the spent flower heads, to cutting plants all the way down to the ground. Pruning can do many things including, extending the bloom period or promoting rebloom, encouraging lush new growth, reducing plant height, keeping plants in their own space and staggering plant heights and bloom times. Many perennials, like geraniums (not the annual Pelargonium that we call geraniums), and Thread-leaf Coreopsis have fine foliage and small flowers. Rather than removing individual flowers, these plants can be deadheaded by shearing off the tops after the first bloom. You can actually remove the foliage of these plants to within 4 to 6 inches of the ground if you want to. This shearing helps keep the plants in their place and promotes rebloom. Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are another perennial that can begin to look straggly in mid summer. Daylilies produce only one cluster of flowers on a stem. You should remove the entire stem once the flowers have finished. On repeat-blooming daylilies like 'Stella d'Oro' this will encourage rebloom. On daylilies that bloom only once, removing spent flower stems simply improves the appearance of the plant. If the foliage of a daylily begins to look really bad, you can cut it of to within 2 or three inches of the ground after bloom. This will promote lush new growth.

Designing a Perennial Garden

Excerpted from Successful Perennial Gardening It may be tempting to choose perennial species for your garden by looks alone. But, as in choosing a spouse, you need to be aware of what is unseen before you take the plunge. The thousands of different perennials vary widely in their growth and blooming habits, and each has different needs that must be met in order to thrive. Read about the plants you'd like to grow, find out if other local gardeners have had success with them, and try to see them bloom at a nursery or neighbor's garden before allotting them space in your own backyard. Starting a Perennial Garden
Some famous gardens include huge beds of perennials, but a few strategically placed plants can do wonders for a small-scale landscape. A perennial garden, like a vegetable plot, is more beautiful, productive, and satisfying when kept to a manageable size. The Chinese have a saying to which all gardeners should pay heed: "Praise large gardens, plant small ones."

Perennial Garden Color By Dr. William C. Welch, Landscape Horticulturist
Landscape Design Possibilities
erennials are versatile plants that offer a variety of creative uses in the garden. Perennials, you will find, offer an infinite number of exciting combinations. From tiny terrace gardens of inner city apartments, to extensive country estates, perennials can add color, form, and texture, often for many years and with a minimum of maintenance. A look at some landscape possibilities should help to stimulate ideas for specific applications. The Perennial Border We inherited from England the perennial border style as we know it today, and it is a version of the cottage gardens that evolved during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The two greatest popularizers of this planting style were Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) and William Robinson (1838-1935), who proposed it as a rebellion against Victorian gardens, landscapes that Robinson once described as “the ugliest gardens ever made.” Typically, the gardens of upper-class Victorians featured rigid, geometric masses of brightly colored annuals, all maintained at a uniform height like tufts in a carpet. This style was known as “bedding out,” and it had gained popularity after 1845 when the British government lifted the tax on glass. By lowering the cost of building greenhouses on residential estates, this measure made it possible to produce annuals economically and in quantity.

has long been the primary source of information for Texas gardeners interested in learning how to garden successfully under hot and dry Southern conditions, using reliable, time-tested garden plants. Only with the special help of a guide written specifically for the Southern region can years of trial and error in the garden be avoided.
Perennial Garden Color provides detailed information on planting and growing over 125 different perennials and their companion plants. Also included are over 100 varieties of old garden roses together with comments on their history and uses. Bill Welch is a popular speaker, well known for the quality of his slides of both garden plants and the design of the gardens and surrounding landscape, as well. He is a member-at-large of the Garden Club of America and the Chairman of the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. four-course Landscape Design series held twice a year in Bryan, Texas, and is responsible for the high quality and range of the invited speakers. Master Gardeners will be quite familiar with his presentations. Readers of this book will find that Dr. Welch goes beyond detailing individual flowers, however, to emphasize their use in landscape design. He shows you how to harmonize the color, texture and shape of perennials, old roses, and companion plants to create an overall effect of grace and elegance. The dozens of photographs of landscape designs offer a wealth of ideas and inspiration. Special attention is focused on the cottage garden, a concept which was brought to the New World from Europe and examples of which can still be found throughout Texas and the South. Dr. Welch presents a history of this traditional design and gives you the information you need to make this lovely European gardening style your own.

"Garden books that describe beautiful plants are thick on the ground, but the majority of them have far too little to say about care of these beauties once you've acquired them. I turn to DiSabato-Aust's really practical reference over and over again when I have a question about whether to cut back in spring or fall, whether a plant can be pinched, and so on."

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Rediscover the charm of perennial foliage in late summer. The key to a successful perennial garden is beautiful foliage. Strategic placement of perennials selected mainly for foliage can provide an attractive interlude between the limited blooming periods of other perennials. While a new spring brings a burst of blooms and an early summer gives way to sun-loving flowers, often by mid- to late-summer most flowers and foliage are exhausted, and the garden starts to show it. That could be because it's easy to tidy up the garden during the early days of summer and easier still at midsummer to let the garden go when the heat becomes too intense. But why do all the work yourself? Perennials selected and planted for continuing summer foliage can do a lot of the work after the first flush of blooms have withered away.

Introduction
Herbaceous perennials are a group of popular ornamental plants. Unlike annuals, perennials come up each spring after dying to the ground each fall. There has been a strong demand for information on selection, garden design, and maintenance of perennials from home gardeners, Master Gardeners, garden center employees, and landscapers. The Southwest Ohio Perennial Flower School is a comprehensive 1-day seminar conducted annually to provide information on perennials to a diverse audience. This program captivated 74 attendees in 1995; 180 in 1996; 260 in 1997; 210 in 1998; 280 in 1999; and 200 in 2000. The Perennial School has also featured local commercial exhibitors each year since 1997.
Targeted Audiences
The targeted audiences of the Perennial School has included home gardeners, Master Gardeners, flower growers, garden center employees, landscapers, garden designers, and Extension professionals. Nearly 40% of the Perennial School attendees have been home gardeners, while 20% have been Master Gardeners. Both home gardeners and Master Gardeners have come to the Perennial School to gain ideas on improving their home landscapes. Master Gardeners also receive advanced training credits for their recertification. Many garden centers, nurseries, and landscaping companies in the Greater Cincinnati Area have adopted this program as their employee-training program. A few Extension professionals have attended the program as well.
