Spring weather features fluctuating temperatures, increased rainfall and occasional high winds. Tender vegetation in the landscape may need to be protected when cold weather returns after a warm period. Spring bulbs and flowering shrubs are most susceptible to frost damage. You can protect your tender plants by covering them with a sheet or landscape fabric designed for that purpose. Simply cover the night before and remove in the morning.

Transplanting Perennials
Q. I started my perennial garden last year, and it has outgrown my wildest imagination. Now I must move the plants to accommodate their size. When is the best time for me to do thisnow in the fall or next spring? A. It depends in part on what you're transplanting. Wait until early spring to transplant fall bloomers like asters and sedum. Plants that have begun to show signs of entering dormancybrowning foliagecan be moved in late summer or early fall. In very cold regions, it's best to divide and transplant no later than early fall so the plants have time to get established before the cold weather and snow hits. Don't worry, though. Anything you don't get to this fall can always be transplanted in early spring. Be sure to water new transplants frequently during dry spells, since you'll invariably damage some of the roots during the transplanting process. Congratulations on your success with your first perennial garden!

Gardening with Perennials

Gardens with Style

Whether you want to create a formal flower garden for special events or a causal garden for strolling, there are many perennial flowers that will fit the bill.
shop for perennials

Choosing a garden style is a little like getting dressed. You might choose a "tie and jacket" look for your garden, using formal, symmetrical plantings, sheared hedges, and rows of flowering plants. Or you might be more of a "blue jeans" gardener, opting for an informal layout with rambling plantings. Or maybe you are somewhere in between.

Maintaining a Perennial Garden
National Gardening Association Editors Perennial gardens require less maintenance than lawns, but they do need regular care to look their best and stay healthy. The following tasks are arranged in order of frequency from weekly to annually.
Tools and Materials
  • Scissors or hand pruners Trowel Water source, soaker hose or sprinkler Hoe with small, sharp blade Half-moon edger or garden spade Lawn rake Steel rake Perennial plant fertilizer Organic mulch
Remove spent flowers . Using scissors or hand pruners, snip off flower stems just above a leaf or bud when they finish blooming to prevent them from forming seeds. Pick off damaged leaves. Inspect for pests and problems . Look for leaves with holes or ragged edges; sticky, discolored or spotted leaves; chewed or abnormally growing flowers or buds; or damaged stems. If you discover a problem, take samples of the damaged plant to a garden center with experienced staff or contact cooperative extension service Master Gardeners in your area for identification and advice. Water . Dig into the top 2 to 3 inches of soil with a trowel. If the soil is dry, water until the soil is moist to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Soaker hoses and drip irrigation pipes apply water more efficiently than overhead sprinklers. Avoid wetting plant leaves late in the day to prevent the spread of some plant diseases.

They come in a potpourri of bloom times, plant sizes, leaf textures, and flower colors, so there's a perennial to please every gardener. Best of all, perennials stage an Oscar-worthy garden performance that improves year after year. To get started on your own perennial paradise, see how we transformed turf into troops of blossoms. Then turn to our perennial garden plans on page 98 for ideas on what to plant in your yard. Perennials are an affordable floral luxury that can be grown in any size garden, from the tiniest side yard to the longest border. The perennial garden at right is a 13- by 24-foot raised bed edged with a stone wall. As you plan your perennial garden, decide whether you want your flowers to be a focal point or a backdrop for an outdoor living area. This garden, right, juts out into what was one large grassy area, creating a blooming focal point in a formerly lawn-covered backyard.

http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/perennials/care.html
After Planting Care
Mulching: Mulch provides a number of benefits. They help to make the garden appear neater, conserve soil moisture, retard weed growth and moderate soil temperatures. There are a variety of materials that can be used as mulch. Examples would be bark, dry grass clippings, and hulls of various sorts. Mulch should not be applied right up to the crown of the plant to avoid problems with crown rots. Leave some air space between the mulch and the crown. Watering: Water is a vital part in getting newly planted perennial gardens established. Soak the plants initially after planting and then check regularly to prevent drying out. Mulching helps to cut down on watering frequency. The general rule of thumb of one inch of water per week for established plantings holds true. Less frequent but deep watering encourage perennials to root more deeply and thus become better able to handle drought conditions. The most common and time efficient way to water perennial gardens is to use soaker hoses. Many perennial gardeners will snake a soaker hose through the garden and leave it there all summer. When water is needed they will connect it to a faucet and turn it on. To make the hose invisible, bury it just under the mulch.

Great taste without compromise.
The destruction of beneficial natural enemies in the U.S. costs agriculture more than $500 million each year. - David Pimintell, Ph.D., Cornell University Growing perennials is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of gardening. Contrary to what many gardeners think, gardening with perennials doesn't need to be complex, difficult, or expensive. The following tips should help you on your way.
  • Start your plants in flats or pots at least 8 to 10 weeks before you intend to place them in the garden. Late spring through late summer are good times to transplant perennials. They should have at least four weeks before the first frost to become established in the garden. Work the soil deeply, adding generous amounts of compost and other slow release amendments like greensand and rock dust.
