In fact many perennials are considered to be short-lived, lasting only 2-3 years. Rose campion is a short lived perennial, but because it self-seeds so readily, it appears to live much longer. Not all plants with the ability to be perennial are hardy in all areas. This is why planting zones are so important. Knowing what zone you garden in will allow you to determine what plants will survive in your area.

Where to use Perennials in the Perennial border
By V. Ries The term perennial border has become a by-word wherever gardening is done. Perennial borders around the edges of the home plot or old-style back yard have done much to get people away from the old type of gardening that consisted of a lawn cluttered up with small flower beds. It is generally realized that today the better effect is obtained by giving the flowers the necessary setting by placing them in a border around the edges of the yard or garden. The lawn then serves as a foreground for the picture. It may have a background hedge or a planting of shrubs; or, if space is lacking, a vine-covered fence may serve and at the same time give the ever essential privacy and seclusion that good taste desires in the modern garden. The perennial border may be fitted to any property, however small, however large. It may be only a foot wide and a few feet long, or ten feet or more wide and several hundred feet long. It may represent the initial expenditure of twenty-five cents for seed or hundreds of dollars for plants.

Whether you're a new gardener planning your first perennial bed, or an experienced gardener hoping to improve your existing plantings, we can help make your garden a success. Firs Let's begin by answering a few common questions about perennials. What does the term perennial mean?
Plants are classified as either annual, biennial, or perennial. Annual plants live for only one growing season, during which they produce seeds and then die. Familiar annual plants include impatiens, zinnias, and sunflowers. Biennial plants, such as some types of foxglove, live for two growing seasons before setting seed and dying. The term

Perennial Gardens for Texas Table of Contents and Excerpt By Julie Ryan A perennial garden is an ever-changing source of delight. Each season brings new colors and textures in flowers and foliage. As the years go by, perennial plantings mature and interweave into forms more beautiful and surprising than a season's growth of annuals can ever give. Best of all, a perennial garden can grow almost anywhere with plants suited to local soils, temperatures, and rainfall. This book is a complete guide to perennial gardening in Texas and similar regions of eastern New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. In Part One, Julie Ryan offers a historical sketch of cottage gardens and perennial borders, with a sampler of some of their modern variations. In Part Two, she defines the major ecological regions of Texas and, with words and color photographs, takes you on a tour of lovely public and private gardens in each region. You'll find all the "how to" information for creating your own garden in Part Three. Ms. Ryan describes and pictures over 300 flowering perennials, bulbs, foliage plants, and old roses suitable for Texas gardens, with lists of companion annuals, vines, shrubs, and small trees. Accompanying charts provide quick reference to each plant's preferred regions and cultivation requirements. In addition, Ms. Ryan discusses how to design a garden and select plants, prepare the beds, and deal with garden pests. She concludes with substantial lists of resources, including mail-order suppliers of perennials, bulbs, and old roses.

Introduction: The Sunny border
by C. Colston Burrell
America is addicted to perennials. Why? Pundits claim that perennial gardening is less work than replanting annuals every season and that perennials are more interesting than traditional low-maintenance shrubs and groundcovers. While this is true, I think the main reason is that people experience pleasure in tending a garden. Sure, we want low maintenance, but we enjoy the act of gardening, not just having a garden. Design and planting are fun enough, but it's the daily or weekly interaction with my plants that I love. Discovering the emerging noses of the first daffodils during spring cleanup or expectantly checking the buds on a favorite peony make gardening so satisfying. Besides, most perennials have something interesting to offer in the way of foliage, flowers, or seed heads throughout the year, whereas annuals produce only blooms at their peak, after which they are yanked out and tossed. By mimicking the structure and functions of a native wetland, you can create a water garden that is beautiful, biodiverse and easy to maintain.

Perennial gardening is so satisfying because the process of growth and change is so dynamic not only week to week and season to season, but year to year. PLANTS THAT GRACE THEIR SPACE
If you are looking for a never-fail perennial garden, seek out never-fail plants. That’s the advice from gardening expert Sydney Eddison. "Start by familiarizing yourself with really sturdy plants for your area. Among those that work well in many parts of North America are day lilies (Hemerocallis), peonies, globe thistles (Echinops), blue star (Amsonia), and boltonia." KNOW YOUR TERMS Perennial : A plant that regrows from the same root year after year. Perennial life spans can vary anywhere from three years to a lifetime. Annual : A plant that lives only one year.

Late Summer Perennial Gardening Tips
Sometimes when we get to the end of a long hot summer, it seems like there is nothing to do but give up. By August, the garden can look tired and tattered. There are some things that can be done now to revive the garden. Mulch can play an important role in the garden at this time. Mulch helps conserve water, keeps root systems cooler and reduces weed problems. During this time of year, inspect your mulch to see if it is still intact or if it has decayed down to a thin layer. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch is a good amount. Less than that may be insufficient to get the job done. If your mulch layer is depleted, go ahead and add some. Deadheading can also improve the look of the late summer garden. Remove spent flowers to keep the garden tidy. You may not want to deadhead everything, especially if you are trying to get plants to naturalize or if you are trying to attract birds. Know what your purpose is and then deadhead select plants. A final task, and the one many gardeners dread, is weeding. Sometimes our late season gardens look bad because the weeds have gained a foothold. Get out and get the weeds out and the garden will begin to look better immediately. Also your perennials will grow better without the competition of the weeds.

Perennial Gardening Flower Tips
My entire gardening website network is all about gardening flower tips. Giving them to you based on my experience – getting them from you and passing them along to others via my blog and my writing. This page links to some of the most useful books I’ve found or have written about perennials. There may be some overlap here and there as some books cover more than a single topic but for the most part, this page is about perennial gardening books and information. Click on each link for tables of contents and pictures from each of the books. Perennials All Season is the book I wrote to tell you:
1) How to have a perennial garden that blooms all summer.
2) Which plants to use.
3) How to combine colors and a simple system to do so.
4) How to maintain them with specific instructions for each plant. Would you like to be able to grow lavender? Then this e-book was written just for you. I've included all the tips I've learned for growing it and overwintering it both in the garden and in containers. Check it out by clicking on the book cover or click here
