Improvised Music for Unusual Instruments The Ill Wind Ensemble uses completely spontaneous improvisation to create an unusual variety of sonic textures, from sparsely ambient to richly dense. The ensemble performs on instruments from western and world music traditions, as well as home-made and "found" instruments, and percussion. A typical performance features clarinets, trumpet, shawms, reedpipes, PVC pipe instruments, garden hose trumpet, windwands, whirling tubes, flutes and whistles, bells, cast-off organ pipes, and numerous other wind and percussion instruments whose origins range from the hardware store to India to Medieval Europe. The ensemble's creative approach to improvisation creates a compelling sound that could be described as "acoustic post-industrial trance music."

Drum Musical Instruments
Drums are probably the world's oldest musical instrument, originating from every country in the world. Drums are considered percussion instruments , but since there are so many varieties of drums, they are presented in their own Drum category which is further broken down by types of drums. Like other musical instruments, many drums can be tuned to produce a specific drum sound. This site also includes drum acessories such as tuners, drum carrying cases, replacement heads for drums and instructional materials which teach you how to play the drum. In addition to being an instrument enjoyed by both children and adults, drums make a beautiful decor item, and some drums have even been made into pieces of furniture as featured in the furniture section.

Significant Points
  • Training requirements include a high school diploma and, in some cases, postsecondary education, coupled with significant on-the-job training.
  • Good opportunities are expected for most types of jobs.
  • Overall employment is expected to grow more slowly than average, but projected growth varies by detailed occupation.
  • About 1 out of 5 is self-employed.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Repairing and maintaining watches, cameras, musical instruments, medical equipment, and other precision instruments requires a high level of skill and attention to detail. For example, some devices contain tiny gears that must be manufactured to within one one-hundredth of a millimeter of design specifications, and other devices contain sophisticated electronic controls. Camera and photographic equipment repairers Camera repairers also repair the increasingly popular digital cameras. Repairs on such cameras are similar to those for most modern cameras, but, because digital cameras have no film to wind, they have fewer moving parts.

Sound production in string instruments
The string bass is often plucked or bowed depending on the genre and piece. In order for a string instrument to produce sound, its string or strings must vibrate. There are three common ways of bringing this about. Instruments such as the guitar and kora are plucked, either by a finger or thumb, or by some other device such as a plectrum . Instruments like the cello and rebec are usually played by drawing a bow across the strings. However, instruments normally bowed are occasionally plucked (this is known as pizzicato ), and instruments normally plucked are sometimes bowed (

M. von Hornbostel has been accorded recognition by both anthropologists and musicologists because it is applicable not only to modern Western instruments but to primitive and exotic instruments as well. This system divides instruments into five main classes: idiophones, membranophones, aerophones, chordophones, and electrophones. Most idiophones, which are instruments made of a sonorous material needing no additional tension, and membranophones, whose sound is produced by the vibrations of a membrane stretched over a hollow resonator, are popularly grouped as percussion instruments ; certain instruments, however, such as the jew's-harp and the glass harmonica (see harmonica ), are idiophones, but are not percussion instruments.
