A large array of percussion instruments made of metal and wood are housed in the Horniman Museum. Many are used in the context of religious ritual, notably the examples from the collections of rattles and over 500 bells.
Specific examples of tuned percussion instruments include a gamelan with iron keys dating from the 19th century. It was collected from the Anglo-Dutch estate Muara and Ciasem near Subang, and originated in Sunda, or West Java, in Indonesia.
There are over 75 examples of the mbira . These instruments that are classified as 'lamellaphones', with plucked keys of metal or cane, and are played all over sub-Saharan Africa. The raw and recycled materials used in a modern mbira dza vadzimu from Zimbabwe form part of the museum's collection of objects associated with the technology of manufacturing musical instruments.

Percussion
Did you know? Until 1970 is was illegal to play the drums in Oman, which is in the Middle East. Percussion Pictures Did you know? People in the Middle East used to put drums on either side of their camels. The drummer sat on top and played them. Asia Minor is where most of the percussion instruments that we see in the orchestra first came from. In the 15th century when people began moving east they brought with them many instruments. Our percussion instruments got their beginnings there. During the Crusades the Crusaders brought back the drums that they found in the Middle East. The percussion section has many different instruments in it. It is usually in the back of the orchestra; sometimes it is right behind the brass section. The percussion section is made up of instruments that use a hammer, mallet or other device, or sounder, to strike the instrument and make the sound. The kettle drums, bells, glockenspiel, xylophone, and celesta are the only ones in this section that have a definite pitch. So most instruments in this section don't have a definite pitch. The drums that are in the percussion section are the snare drum, kettle drum, bass drum, and the side drum. Some of the other instruments in this section are tubular bells, xylophone, cymbals, glockenspiel, gong, tambourines, Chinese gong, triangle, castanets, celesta, vibraphone, tamtam, wood block, and bells.

Featuring unusual, hand-made mallet percussion by Jim Doble For the last twelve years I've devoted a good amount of time to creating new percussion instruments with new sounds. I make a "line" of mallet percussion as well as custom, experimental, and one of a kind marimbas and musical instruments. I sell to professionals, schools, science and children's museums, music therapy centers, and to total novices. All musical instruments are well built for years of playing. They're available in pentatonic, diatonic, and chromatic tunings (see "About Tunings" ) as well as custom and experimental tunings. I also sell West African drums and Nigerian made drums, small percussion and related books and recordings.
I'm constantly updating this site and adding new instruments. Recently, I've added playable virtual instruments of glass stone , and metal as well as expanding my page of instruments specifically suited for children's museums and playgrounds . Also new are 3 octave instruments of glass and stone.
I now accept Paypal as well as checks and credit cards. Soon I'll be expanding my "do it yourself"

Main History Make-up Costumes ... Percussion Percussion Instrument There are many members in the family of percussion instruments, all of which possess distinguished features. Though their tone colors are simple, some of them cannot even be regarded as musical sounds. They play a vital role in enhancing the atmosphere of the music. The percussion instruments produce sounds through striking, rubbing, or shaking. Some of them can be used as melody instruments. There is a great variety of percussion instruments in China, with playing skills that are rich and have distinctive ethnical styles. With their ways of producing sounds, they can be divided into several sub-categories: 1) brass group , such as the dalo, xiaolo, yunlo, small and big cymbals, etc.; 2) wood group , such as the ban, bagzi, and muyu, etc.; 3)

More Than Drums The family of instruments called percussion instruments is large. It includes instruments that are sounded by striking, shaking, plucking or scraping. All instruments such as drums and bells fall into this category. Percussion instruments may be further divided into those instruments that produce a definite pitch and those that do not. Some whistles (aerophones) are also included in this category because they are considered to be 'sound effects'. Some members of the percussion family may well be considered the oldest of all instruments. Rhythms beaten out on primitive surfaces or makeshift instruments have served to express sentiments and feelings throughout the ages. Generally, percussion instruments are objects that are activated by striking other objects or by shaking. The resulting sound can not only articulate the rhythm but also add color, tonal complexion, and dynamic impact to the vocal or instrumental music of which they are a part.
Drums consist essentially of skins and "shells". The drumskins are normally of calfskin or "vellums." The shell is a hollow cylinder or a bowl, more rarely a frame of some other shape, across which the skin is stretched.

Cuban Orisha Percussion are ritually consecrated and are particularly pleasing to the orishas. In ceremonies where there is a less rigorous protocol, other instruments can be used, such as (large gourd rattles that are strung with beads or seeds), conga drums and a guataca (a hoe blade or cowbell played with a striker). Orisha percussion generally accompanies singing in which deities are praised and invited to descend upon their devotees. Though most Orisha percussionists play mainly for religious ceremonies, some occasionally appear in nightclub shows, museum programs or similar settings. Orisha percussionists believe that, when they perform in secular contexts, they help audiences gain a new perspective on a religion that is often misunderstood.
