Percussion instruments are a very important part of a song. Without drums a song would have no beat. What's a song without a beat? Lame - that's what. Drums aren't the only way to add beats and rhythms to your tune though. There are a lot of neat percussion instruments that'll spice up your songs. Here are a few to shake things up.
Percussion Instrument - Guiro
The guiro is a hand-held hollow percussion instrument made out of wood or from a gourd . It originated in Latin America and comes in a variety of long shapes . One of the shapes looks like a fish so the instrument is often referred to as "the fish." To play the fish you simply scrape a wood stick back and forth across the ridges on the body. The tempo (or speed) is up to you. It makes that famous "cha-cha" sound and is very common in Latin American pop music like Ricky Martin.
Percussion Instrument - The Cowbell
The cowbell (also called the square hand bell ) got its name cuz it looks like something your cow Bessie would sport around her neck. The cowbell is made out of

Musical Instruments The great majority of musical instruments fall readily into one of six major categories: bowed strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, and the guitar family, the first four of which form the basis of the modern symphony orchestra.
Bowed Strings
The four principle orchestral string instruments are (in descending order of overall pitch) the violins (usually divided into two sections, playing individual parts), the violas, the cellos and the double basses......
Woodwind
The four principle woodwind instruments of the orchestra all work by means of a system of keys (usually silver-plated) which when variously depressed and released allow air to pass through differing amounts of the instrument resulting in notes of different pitch......
Brass Instruments
Brass instruments are also activated by blowing into them, although instead of using a form of reed over which the mouth is placed, the lips are placed against or inside the cup of a metal mouthpiece, and made to vibrate against its inner rim......
Percussion instruments
A percussion instrument is probably best defined as one where a resonating surface is struck by the player, either by hand or by some form of stick......

Musical instruments
Egyptian musical instruments were well developed and varied. They included string instruments such as harps, lyres, lutes, percussion instruments like drums, rattles, tambourines, bells (first used during the Late Period) and cymbals (Roman Period), wind instruments like flutes, clarinets, double pipes, trumpets, and oboes.
Wind instruments
Flutes were among the first musical instruments used. Double flutes were at first made of two parallel pipes, but later the two pipes were separated and set at an acute angle. They are still used in Egypt today.
Double oboes were known since about 2800 BCE. They had two pipes of unequal length, the longer was used as a drone or to play notes that the shorter pipe couldn't hit.
In the second century BCE the Alexandrian Ctesibios invented the hydraulic organ which used water pressure to deliver air to the organ-pipes.

The Hornbostel-Sachs system of classification for musical instruments Today, the most widely used system of classification for musical instruments in the museum world is the Hornbostel-Sachs system, developed during the 1910s. This was the first system that could be applied to instruments the world over. In this system, there are five families established according to the component that vibrates to produce a sound:
  • The drum family or membranophones The stringed instruments or chordophones The wind instruments or aerophones The percussion instruments or idiophones The electrophones

  • 1) The drum family, or membranophones The family of membranophones is made up of instruments, like the drum, whose vibrating element consists in a membrane. Drums all have a skin or membrane that is struck either with a stick or the hands or a combination of stick and hand. They can be single-headed i.e. have a single membrane at one end of their body. Drums can also be double headed i.e. have a membrane at either end.

        Families of Musical Instruments
Musical instruments are grouped into families based on how they make sounds. In an orchestra, musicians sit together in these family groupings. But not every instrument fits neatly into a group. For example, the piano has strings that vibrate, and hammers that strike. Is it a string instrument or a percussion instrument? Some say it is both!
        Brass
Brass instruments are made of brass or some other metal and make sound when air is blown inside. The musician's lips must buzz, as though making a "raspberry" noise against the mouthpiece. Air then vibrates inside the instrument, which produces a sound. Brass instruments include trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, cornet, and bugle.

    History
The first type of percussion instrument was simply anything hit together to produce sound. Drums evolved from this and are known to have existed from around 6000 BC. They were used by all major civilizations throughout the world. Percussion instruments have strong ceremonial, sacred, or symbolic associations almost everywhere. Certain drums symbolize and protect tribal royalty in much of Africa. They were also used to transmit messages over long distances. They also played a major role in medieval and Renaissance Europe. The snare drum and its relatives were used in the infantry to send coded instructions to the soldiers. The development the individual instruments is discussed in its section.
    Description
A percussion instrument is defined as instruments made of sonorous material. A vibration produces sounds of definite or indefinite pitch when shaken or struck. The pitch is determined in many different ways. It is done through the tautness of the stretched material for indefinite pitch instruments. The pitch is determined by the size of the objects in definite pitch instruments. Notes are produced by striking the instrument in certain places.
