Introduction The collective suicide of over 900 members of Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana on the 18 th of November 1978 has in many ways become in the public consciousness the archetypal example of the ‘suicide cult’. John Hall, for example, speaks of how the story of what transpired in Jonestown on that day has become ‘infamous as the ultimate “cult” nightmare’; an almost mythical event that ‘drifts on a sea of memory, only loosely tied to the moorings of history’ (Hall et al , 2000:15, 17). The word ‘Jonestown’, in particular, has become a shorthand in the popular consciousness and among various ‘anti-cult’ campaigners for both the dangers posed by ‘cults’ and their ‘manipulative leaders’ to their ‘brainwashed followers’, and also for incidents where it is believed a, typically non-mainstream, religious movement will undertake, or has undertaken, a similar act of collective suicide. Every subsequent case of apparently similar behaviour is thus, for those who hold and promote such a view, ‘another Jonestown’ (Maaga, 1998; Moore, 2002).

The newest addition to the Alternative Considerations website is the archiving of a larger body of work that predates the creation of our own. In 1988, Laurie Efrein Kahalas launched “jonestown.com” as a means to present information which was not part of the general public’s knowledge and understanding of Peoples Temple and the events of 18 November 1978. As a member of the Temple who had never lived in Jonestown, Ms. Kahalas had access to hundreds of documents stateside which investigating agencies never included in any official findings. She also pursued her own ongoing and independent research. After six years in operation and over six million hits, “jonestown.com” was discontinued as a separate entity on the Internet. In the interest of preserving the information from the site for future generations of Jonestown scholars and researchers, the managers of the Alternative Considerations site asked Ms. Kahalas for permission to archive her work in its entirety. The History of Jonestown
In 1978, U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan went to Jonestown to investigate supposed abuses by the People's Temple onto its members. After staying for a day, Ryan tried to leave, taking four of the cult members who had decided to defect. Realizing this, Jones ordered them killed, as was done. Sensing that his utopia in the jungle would surely come to an end after word got back to the states about Ryan; Jones decide to put his suicide plan into action. Telling his subjects that it was a "revolutionary death," he had a large quantity of fruit punch laced with cyanide prepared. After making all 276 children at Jonestown drink the punch, all the adults proceeded. In the end, after Jones apparently killed himself with a gunshot to the head, 914 people had died.

Why the Peoples Temple?
Martin Heidegger theorized that cultural truths are revealed only when specific cultural manifestations cease to work properly. He called this concept "breakdown." The larger meanings of culture itself, according to this understanding, are primarily invisible to those within culture until part of it breaks down. An aberrant occurrence or anomaly, as referred to by Mary Douglas, represents such a breakdown. In turn, the development of new religions and cults exemplify Douglas's idea of anomaly. The Peoples Temple cult, and specifically the mass suicide of so many of its members, represents an anomaly, and therefore a breakdown, in the culture of mid-twentieth century America. An examination of the development and eventual self-destruction of the Peoples Temple should shed light on that culture. The Jonestown cult was born of that culture and in turn reflects back upon it, that is, the Peoples Temple was effected (created) by mainstream American culture of its time and in turn affected that same culture.

At the time, more former members told of beatings and abuse within the People's Temple, and relatives of members insisted that members were being forced to remain there against their will.

[Peoples Temple] Villagers Recall Jonestown Massacre
Peoples Temple ReligionNewsBlog.com Decades After Jonestown Massacre, Villagers Distrustful of New Foreign Influx The Associated Press, Nov. 18, 2002 http://abcnews.go.com/ JONESTOWN, Guyana Nov. 18 — Razor grass, vines and a few wild daisies cover the area where American cult leader Jim Jones urged more than 900 followers to commit mass suicide. Few care to remember the horrors of Nov. 18, 1978. But painful memories are reawakening with a new influx of foreigners U.S. missionaries and wildcat Brazilian gold miners to the remote jungle outpost. "I see strange faces and I feel scared again," said Caroline George, 37, whose three siblings died at Jonestown. "Everything is different in Guyana but it somehow feels the same." Residents of Port Kaituma, the nearest town about six miles away, asked themselves the other day what the business might be of a Nigerian who stopped in at a diner for some fried chicken; and of a Colombian who landed on the airstrip in a private plane.

The Changing Face of Cults
The Jonestown Massacre
February 2001
By Rick Ross
On November 18, 1978 912 followers of American cult leader Jim Jones ("Peoples Temple") died in a remote South American jungle compound called "Jonestown" in British Guyana. Some members were shot, others were forced to drink poison, but most willingly participated in what Jones said was an act of "revolutionary suicide." Jim Jones began his ministry in 1953 as an independent minister in Indianapolis, but was later ordained in 1964 by the Disciples of Christ. By the end of 1971 he had moved his congregation to California eventually establishing two churches there. His main church remained in San Francisco, but a second was also opened in Los Angeles. The Peoples Temple peaked during the 70s to include perhaps as many as 8,000 members. Though racially diverse, most of Jones followers were African Americans. Jim Jones was once a popular community activist in San Francisco who contributed cash and coordinated volunteers to support both causes and political leaders.
Jerry Brown and
Jim Jones
He could turn out thousands for almost any event or effort. During the 70s he appeared with many prominent politicians including then State Assemblyman Willie Brown. In 1976 Mayor George Moscone gave Jones a seat on the San Francisco Housing Authority Commission. Governor Jerry Brown was even seen attending services at the Peoples Temple.

Monterey Peninsula Herald - Nov. 28, 1978, p. 4 Los Angeles Times Service LOS ANGELES When Congressman Leo Ryan and his entourage arrived at Jonestown, Guyana, 10 days ago, only one person a freelance journalist was forbidden to enter by cult leader Jim Jones.
That journalist, Gordon Lindsay of Los Angeles, already knew about the horror of Jonestown, the Peoples Temple and Jim Jones, and had been trying to tell the world for months.
In June, Lindsay wrote a 62-page, hauntingly prophetic account of slave labor conditions at Jonestown, the madness of Jones, mass suicide drills, armed guards and the alleged sexual blackmail of a high-ranking Guyana official by a temple member.
His account charged that U.S. consular officials in Guyana had intimate knowledge of the accusations made against Jonestown, and even were involved in the escape of one temple member. Couldn't Get Published But nobody would publish the story. Not even the National Inquirer, which Lindsay said paid him and photographer Cyril Maitland some $10,000 to investigate Jonestown.
