The Arctic culture area reaches across present-day northern Alaska and Canada, and includes portions of northeastern Siberia and coastal Greenland. Much of the vast, treeless arctic plains, called tundra , are frozen and snow-covered, with temperatures below -18°C (0°F) for seven or eight months of the year. Winters are long and severe, with few hours of daylight. The Arctic region’s craggy coastline touches upon three oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic, and the Atlantic. The Arctic Ocean freezes over in winter and then breaks up into drift ice during the brief summer thaw. Thousands of islands are found offshore.

At certain periods during the Pleistocene epoch, the temperatures turned cold enough to freeze much of the earth's water into ice. The sea level dropped as much as 90 m (300 ft) and the shallow Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia became a natural land bridge on which grazing animals, and the humans who stalked them, passed. Most anthropologists believe that Native Americans descend from Asian peoples who moved into North America by way of this land bridge.

Indigenous Latin Americans Look Far North for a Model
By Marcela Sanchez Special to washingtonpost.com Thursday, July 21, 2005; 5:12 PM WASHINGTON Some native peoples of the Andes are looking north for a new model of development but farther north than you might think. They are not asking for access to micro-enterprise loans or for ways to migrate to richer lands. They are thinking big and talking big money. They are imagining homegrown, for-profit corporations where indigenous people are shareholders and multinationals are business partners. To be exact, they are talking corporate capitalism according to the Alaskan model. Back in 1971, landmark legislation known as the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) was approved in the U.S. Congress to end a dispute between the state and natives over Alaskan lands, allowing the construction of an 800-mile oil pipeline from the North Slope to the port of Valdez. ANCSA paid native groups nearly $1 billion for lands retained by the state and created 13 regional and more than 170 village for-profit corporations, giving them full rights to 10 percent of the state's lands, including any resources on or below the surface.

of the Southwestern Deserts
Various Apache peoples (including the Navajo) came from the Far North to settle the Plains and Southwest after AD 1000 in three desert regions (Great Basin, Sonoran and Chihuahuan). The word Apache is most likely derived by the Spanish from a Zuni word meaning "enemy." Subsequently, many groups of Southwest peoples were labeled "Apache," resulting in a considerable array (40+) of "Apache" groups, often with tragic consequences. The various groups usually hunted and gathered in the more mountainous regions, but also practiced some gardening or trade for cultivated plant products (CBS). Today, the major Apache groups include the Jicarilla (New Mexico), the Mescalero (New Mexico) and Western Apache (Arizona. 15 reservations). The Chiricahua Apache were removed from their own reservation in 1876 and sent to prison in 1886. Subsequently, some Chiricahua relocated to Oklahoma and some joined the Mescalero Apache in southern New Mexico. Today, Apache groups have been very successful in ranching and recreational facilities; especially ski resorts in some of their beautiful mountain areas.

Over the past five centuries, thousands of American Indians have come to Europe. Although they did not come as conquerors, and often arrived rather as members of conquered peoples, their impact on Europeans goes far beyond the limited scope of their physical transatlantic presence. Stereotypical images of the "Indian," ranging from the noble savage to the savage brute, were created in Europe only in small part on the basis of personal encounters with Native Americans; for the most part they were adapted from classical and medieval views of cultural "otherness" according to their creators' ever-changing needs. American Indian visitors to Europe were more affected by European visions of the "Indian" than they were effective in creating those visions. Columbus was only the first explorer to abduct American Indians and present them in Europe as proof of his transatlantic discoveries and of the potential usefulness of these people to Europeans. In 1501, the king of Portugal was reportedly pleased at the sight of a group of above-average-sized natives of Newfoundland, whom he intended to use as slaves. Hundreds of Native Americans were shipped to Europe for that very purpose in the first decades of the sixteenth century. The practice was largely abandoned when American Indians turned out to be especially susceptible to European diseases, but the trade continued into the seventeenth century. In 1614, for example, the ship captain Thomas Hunt kidnapped twenty-four native New Englanders, including the famous Squanto, and sold them in Málaga to the Spaniards.
