Every state has its own requirements, so your first step should be to talk to your state Board of Education and find out what your state's specific certification requirements are. While requirements vary by state, all states do require:
  • A bachelor's degree Completion of an approved teacher training program A prescribed number of subject and education credits Supervised practice teaching
  • One cool thing about certification: as of 2000, 39 states (plus the District of Columbia) have an agreement that permits certification reciprocity. This means that if you get certified in one of those 39 states, your certification counts for all 39 states. These states include: Alabama
    Arkansas
    Arizona
    California
    Colorado
    Connecticut
    Delaware
Washington DC Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland

Standards and Assessment Student learning standards and assessments, especially at the secondary level In summer 1990, the Michigan Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law Public Act 25 (PA 25), a complex education reform package. Among other provisions, PA 25 called for the Michigan State Board of Education to develop and publish a set of "model core curriculum outcomes" that state what all students should know, know how to do, and be motivated or disposed to do. In keeping with this legislation, the board's model outcomes, published in spring 1991, were based in part on the board's revised set of Essential Goals and Objectives in mathematics (1989) and science (1991). The Essential Goals and Objectives also provide the basis for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), the state's criterion-referenced assessment program (MSSI Grant Proposal, 1991). The MEAP exams are given in grade 4 (reading and mathematics), grade 5 (science), grade 7 (reading and mathematics), grade 8 (science), and grade 10 (reading and mathematics). In September l993, the Michigan Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law the state aid bill for 1993-94 (PA 175, 1993). Section 104a of PA 175 pertains to the state-endorsed diploma the proficiency examination. For a pupil scheduled to graduate in 1994, 1995, or 1996 to be eligible for a state endorsement in one or more of the subject areas of communication arts, mathematics, or science, the pupil must achieve at least one of the following:

    Frequently Asked Questions: Education
What is the field experience and how does it work?
The field experience requires the student to spend 5 days per week for 12 weeks with a cooperating teacher in an appropriate elementary or secondary school classroom. A coordinator of field experiences from Drexel's School of Education will work with you to arrange a school-based, field placement related to your area of certification in the area where you live or work. Usually there are no problems finding a cooperating school, but should you run into problems, Drexel will supply you with recommendation letters. Once you find an acceptable site, Drexel will work with the school's principal and cooperating teacher regarding meeting the course's objectives/goals. You will also videotape yourself teaching and send the Field Experience Coordinator tapes periodically for evaluation.
How does Drexel's certificate reciprocity apply to other states?

Search Hiring 'highly qualified' new teachers for Philadelphia Emergency-certified teachers are on the way out, but a loophole in federal law allows new teachers to have no prior classroom experience. by Paul Socolar The School District of Philadelphia has expanded its teacher recruitment efforts, but will need to do more in order to meet federal requirements regarding "highly qualified" teachers. That is because the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) cracks down on the frequent practice of hiring "emergency-certified" teachers. In Pennsylvania, teachers who are emergency-certified have not passed the state-required Praxis teacher licensure tests in basic skills and/or the content area in which they are teaching. In addition they may not have had classroom teaching experience. Philadelphia's recent hires include some emergency-certified teachers and many others who are considered "highly qualified" under NCLB yet had no classroom experience before starting the job.
