Library Media Services Welcome to the Library Media Centers in our Schools! The Peters Township School District provides a written, articulated and dynamic library media curriculum to all students in grades K-12. The library media centers at each school educate students on using specific online public access catalogs (opac) and various technology literacy skills as outlined in the PA Technology Standards and ISTE NETS Standards for students. The librarians work with the staff in each building to provide curriculum support and activities to enhance the district's reading initiatives. Serving as the schools' academic and research areas, the library media centers are staffed by certified school librarians and support staff. Parent, student and community volunteers provide valuable help in each library.

Staffing School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Strong Libraries Improve Student Achievement From time to time, Education World reposts articles with important messages. This article, originally posted in 2000, makes a point worth revisiting about the importance of school libraries and librarians. Last month, site-based management teams at 11 elementary schools in Kalamazoo, Michigan, chose to cut their budgets for the 2000-2001 school year by eliminating the position of school librarian. Did they make the right decision? A new study indicates that what they made was a big mistake! Included: Results of a recent study show that students at schools with strong media centers scored significantly higher on standardized tests than students at schools with less-well-equipped and staffed libraries. MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
This page contains links to research reports and other documents that show that school libraries make a difference to student achievement; that school libraries have a positive impact on students and on learning. There are documents from a number of countries. There are also links to articles in professional journals and newspapers that are based on these documents. This page is intended to help school librarians to answer the question, "Do school libraries make a difference?".
School Libraries Work!
This is a Research Foundation Paper published by Scholastic Library Publishing; it brings together research findings from almost ten years of school library-related research. The preface notes, "A substantial body of research since 1990 clearly demonstrates the importance of school libraries to students' education. Whether student achievement is measured by standardized reading achievement tests or by global assessments of learning, research shows that a well-stocked library staffed by a certified library media specialist has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community."

BAPS CARE INTERNATIONAL EDISON, NJ
Edison, NJ, USA On February 15, 2005, school children from two elementary schools in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey presented representatives of BAPS Care International with donations to be used towards its tsunami relief efforts. The mayor of the township, Hon. Frank Pelzman, was present and spoke of the hard work of the students as well the work that BAPS Care International undertakes. Many members of the community, including the Township Council, were present. Although the disaster had occurred during their winter vacations, students from Lynn Crest School 22 and Pennsylvania Avenue School 27 came back with an earnest desire to do something for the victims. Through donating their own money and through various fund raisers, the students at Lynn Crest raised $4,238 and those at Pennsylvania collected $2,270.
We at BAPS Care International are deeply touched by such a noble act of care and concern from these students. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors of the tsunami relief efforts.
