Tell Us Your Story
Since 2000, studies on the impact of school libraries and librarians on academic achievement have been conducted in Colorado and more than a dozen other states. Have you used one or more of these studies as an advocate for school libraries and librarians? If so, we would appreciate hearing from you in a short survey. It's about time we find out what sort of impact this research itself has had. Click here to fill out the School Library Studies Outcomes Survey

... LS 491 Introduction The Department of Library Science offers one undergraduate major, participates in three dual majors, and offers one concentration. The primary focus of the department's undergraduate program is the preparation of students for careers as school library media specialists. In this respect, the department plays a unique role within the Commonwealth: it is one of only three institutions of higher education in Pennsylvania providing undergraduate school library media certification; it is the only such institution in western Pennsylvania; and it is the only institution in Pennsylvania providing both graduate and undergraduate school library media certification programs. Top of Page Library Science B.S.Ed. The B.S.Ed. in Library Science is a 120-credit major that prepares students for Pennsylvania School Library Media Certification, grades K-12. The program emphasizes field experiences and the use of advanced information technology. Pennsylvania School Library Media Certification, K-12, is also valid for initial certification in over 40 other states. The following courses are required:

LS 600 Graduate Program Objectives The graduate program in library science provides professional study encompassing the principles and techniques common to all types of libraries and information centers with the opportunity for advanced work in areas of special interest. The curriculum reflects today's applications of information technology in libraries and information centers. The master's program at Clarion University was initiated in 1967 and has the distinction of being the first graduate library science program offered within the State System of Higher Education. The program has been accredited by the American Library Association since 1976. Proof of the Power: Recent Research on the Impact of School Library Media Programs on the Academic Achievement of U.S. Public School Students. ERIC Digest.
By mid 2001, researchers affiliated with the Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library and the University of Denver had completed four statewide studies on the impact of school library media programs on the academic achievement of U.S. public school students: * Information Empowered: The School Librarian as an Agent of Academic Achievement in Alaska, * Measuring Up to Standards: The Impact of School Library Programs and Information Literacy in Pennsylvania Schools, * How School Librarians Help Kids Achieve Standards, The Second Colorado Study, and * Good Schools Have School Librarians: Oregon School Librarians Collaborate to Improve Academic Achievement.
    BACKGROUND
Philosophically, these studies are rooted in the Information Power model espoused by the American Association of School Librarians and the findings from six decades of research related to the impact of school library media programs on academic achievement.

Imposed information seeking in public libraries and school library media centers: a common behaviour?
    Melissa Gross

    Tallahassee, FL 32306-2100 USA
Abstract The imposed query model provides a new way of thinking about whom the user is in information proving organizations and environments. It does this by making a distinction between questions that are self-generated (internally motivated by personal context) and those that are imposed (thought up by one person then given to someone else to resolve). While the imposed query model represents familiar behaviour, it is a dimension of information seeking that has only recently been explicitly addressed and isolated for study. This article summarizes research on the imposed query in two different information providing contexts: the elementary school and the adult reference desk at the public library. Results reveal whom the imposers and agent users are in these environments and provide an assessment of how common imposed queries are in these contexts.
    Introduction
Many models are available that represent the information seeking process ( Wilson , 1999). The majority of these models assume that individuals seek information and interact with information systems in response to their own, self-generated information needs. While these models do recognize that people go to other people as potential resource when in pursuit of information, the models fail to recognize that the default behaviour, when the person resource doesn't have the answer, doesn't have to be an interaction with information providing objects, organizations, or systems. Instead the person seeking information may ask someone to find the answer for them.
