Early History and Geography
Butler County, Pennsylvania, was created on March 12, 1800, from a portion of Allegheny County . Like many other western Pennsylvania counties, Butler County was named for a Revolutionary War hero, General Richard Butler. The county seat, the Borough of Butler, was laid out in 1803, and on April 2, 1803, the county was formally organized for judicial purposes. The official boundaries of Butler were defined in 1800 as follows: Beginning at a locust tree on the south side of Buffalo Creek (near Freeport), thence along the Allegheny line due west 23 miles, thence due north 23 miles, then north 35 degrees east 15 miles, then east to the Allegheny River, thence due south to the place of beginning. Thus, the shape of Butler County is a rectangle (33 miles NS by 23 miles EW) with north-western corner removed diagonally. The boundaries of Butler County, in contrast to many other Pennsylvania counties, have remained unchanged from its creation to the present. Butler County is bordered by eight other Pennsylvania counties:
  • Allegheny County on the entire southern border

Interesting Information About Pennsylvania The Geography of Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania's nickname "The Keystone State" is quite apt, as the state forms a geographic bridge both between the Northeastern states and the Southern states, and between the Atlantic seaboard and the Midwest. It is bordered on the north and northeast by New York, on the east, across the Delaware River by New Jersey, on the south by Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia, on the west by Ohio, and on the northwest by Lake Erie. The Delaware, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers are the major rivers of the state. The Youghiogheny River and Oil Creek are smaller rivers which have played an important role in the development of the state. The capital is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is 180 miles (290 km) north to south and 310 miles (500 km) east to west. The total land area is 44,817 square miles (119,283 km²), 739,200 acres (2,990 km²) of which are bodies of water. It is the 33rd largest state in the United States. The highest point of 3,213 feet (979 m) above sea level is at Mount Davis. Its lowest point is at sea level on the Delaware River. Pennsylvania is in the Eastern time zone.

The diverse discipline of geography exposes students to the multitude of ways in which geographers study the world. Geographers study human-environment interactions and their spatially varying expression. Numerous tools and techniques are employed in geographic research including cartography (the art and science of map making and use), geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery and air photo interpretation, surveys, and mathematical modeling and statistical analysis. Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography: Major Tracks

Linguistic Geography of Pennsylvania
The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

Geography is the study of the Earth's surface: where things are and why they are there. Every day there are geographers investigating the physical characteristics of the Earth such as its weather and climate, its landforms and rivers, the soils and vegetation while others are looking at the distributions of human characteristics such as population and settlement, and the patterns of economic and political activity. Still others are planning cities, assessing environmental uses and issues, helping locate stores and factories, preparing maps, and using the latest computer and satellite technology to understand the patterns of our planet.
