We are a young profession, and the list of issues that are important to our future is by nature long. On this list at any given time might be issues that currently do not appear urgent, but in fact are. One issue on our profession's current "to do" list is urgent, and failure to take action promptly could have serious negative consequences long into the future.

Secondary Education - General Science
Effective Fall, 2005 Administered by Educational Studies and Secondary Education Requirements for the Major in Secondary Education (7-12) include general education courses, education courses, plus courses specified for various specializations. Some courses which satisfy the university's general education requirement are included in the course listings for the individual areas of specialization under secondary education. Students are required to take six credits of math and six credits of composition and literature as part of their general education requirements. Students should consult their secondary education adviser and area of specialization content adviser to plan a course of study. Admissions, Monitoring and Advisement Students must submit a completed application packet to the faculty advisor. The faculty advisor will review the packet, interview the student, and submit a recommendation to the department chairperson indicating that the student be admitted or not be admitted to the program. Enrollment in upper division Teacher Education coursework (300 and 400 level courses) is contingent upon admission to the Teacher Education program.

General Information
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania needs educators who can meet the challenges of teaching in an age of knowledge explosion, educators who are caring, respected professionals who exercise leadership as learner advocates. The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Teaching (PGST) is designed to meet this need by offering a planned, residential, educational enrichment experience that will help participants learn how to build and use knowledge, match appropriate teaching methods to learners' styles and subject matter and make informed decisions in the best interests of students.
Who May Apply
Academically talented high school students who are current juniors at the time of the application deadline may apply to the Governor's School for Teaching. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate academic achievement, an interest in educational processes and a record of leadership and service activities. The Selection Process
The application has four parts. The applicant completes the Personal Data Form, attaching essays. Next two teachers must complete reference forms. The applicant's guidance counselor completes a recommendation form, attaching the transcript, attendance record and, if available, test scores and class standing.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened: Section 1. Section 10-293 of the general statutes is repealed and the following is substituted in lieu thereof ( Effective October 1, 2004 (a) The Board of Education and Services for the Blind shall consist of seven members , six of whom shall be appointed by the Governor and shall be residents of this state . The Commissioner of Social Services shall be a member, ex officio. The other six members , two of whom shall be blind persons, shall be appointed by the Governor, and each shall be a resident of this state. One of the members appointed by the Governor shall be the parent of a child who receives services provided by the board, and not less than two of the members appointed by the Governor shall be blind persons. The Governor may, for reasonable cause, remove any appointive appointed member and appoint another person to fill the vacancy for the unexpired portion of the term.
