Penn State University Press

Excerpt
The first issue of The Journal of General Education appeared in 1946, although there was a long hiatus in publication before 1961 when The Pennsylvania State University Press took over its publication from the University of Chicago Press. The founding intention was to further the "general education movement," whose "salient features" included "a reaction against specialism and vocationalism; an effort to integrate the subject matter of related disciplines;...[and] an attempt to assist the student in seeing the relationship between learning and life and in using his [ sic ] knowledge and skills in daily living...." It hoped to offer articles concerning the movement in "philosophical and social" thought and provide practical and innovative pedagogical experiences, as well as critical commentary.

PA Organizations General Information Q. What is a Physician Assistant (PA)? A. Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. PAs employed by the federal government are credentialed to practice. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret te sts, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and in virtually all states can write prescriptions. Within the physician-PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. A PA's practice may also include education, research, and administrative services. PAs are trained in intensive education programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) Because of the close working relationship the PAs have with physicians, PAs are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training. Upon graduation, physician assistants take a national certification examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of PAs in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. To maintain their national certification, PAs must log 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and sit for a recertification every six years. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program and passage of the national certifying exam are required for state licensure.

General Education Description The new General Education program was approved by the Faculty Senate on February 28, 1995. It became fully implemented during the 1997-98 academic year. The aim of General Education at Missouri State University is "to develop people capable of making choices that lead to thoughtful, creative and productive lives and to responsible participation in society." The latter statement reflects the institutional commitment to develop persons capable of responsible citizenship, a central focus of the public affairs mission. Two required courses within the General Education program particularly address the public affairs mission. The first, IDS 110 Introduction to University Life , includes units which explore the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society as well as encouraging students to participate in volunteer community service. IDS 110 is mandatory for beginning freshmen. The second course is the General Education capstone course, GEP 397 Public Affairs Issues for the 21st Century , which is open to students who have completed 60 or more hours. An integrative and interdisciplinary experience which addresses public affairs and choices of broad importance from the perspectives and interaction of multiple fields, this multiple-topic course also includes an examination of crucial decisions facing individuals and communities.

About Physician Assistants
Physician assistants are academically and clinically prepared to provide health care services with the direction and responsible supervision of a doctor of medicine or osteopathy. The physician-PA team relationship is fundamental to the PA profession and enhances the delivery of high quality health care. Within the physician-PA relationship, PAs make clinical decisions and provide a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and health maintenance services. The clinical role of Pas includes primary and specialty care in medical and surgical practice settings. PA practice is centered on patient care and may include educational, research, and administrative activities. The American Academy of Family Physicians , the American Academy of Pediatrics , the American Academy of Physician Assistants , the American College of Physicians , the American College of Surgeons , the American Medical Association , and the Association of Physician Assistant Programs all cooperate with the ARC-PA to establish, maintain, and promote appropriate standards of quality for entry level education of physician assistants (Pas) and to provide recognition for educational programs that meet the minimum requirements outlined in these Standards. These Standards are to be used for the development, evaluation, and self-analysis of physician assistant programs.

Jennings Environmental Education Center
Jennings offers a full range of educational programs. A unique attraction at the center is its relict prairie, which includes the spectacular and well-known prairie flower, the blazing star. The relict prairie ecosystem is rare in Pennsylvania. Visitors should try to visit in late July or early August when the pairie is in full bloom. Jennings Environmental Education Center is one of several state parks specifically dedicated to provide environmental education and interpretation to the community. A variety of programs are available for children, teachers, and the general public that increase knowledge and awareness of the beauty and importance of our natural resources. By taking some time to explore Jennings through its trail network or community programs, visitors can enjoy the outdoors while learning the skills needed to be good stewards of Pennsylvania’s outstanding natural resources. Jennings provides a unique combination of prairie and forest, which offers a wide array of resource and education opportunities. One of the park’s main features, the 20-acre prairie ecosystem, is home to distinctive prairie plants and the endangered massasauga rattlesnake. The most noteworthy and spectacular prairie flower is the blazing star. Jennings was the first reserve established in Pennsylvania to protect an individual plant species and remains the only public and protected prairie in the Commonwealth.

Jacobsburg offers environmental education programs from the preschool environmental awareness programs to high school level environmental problem solving programs, historical programs, teacher workshops and public interpretive programs. Once the site where the famous Henry Rifle was made, the Jacobsburg National Historic District lies almost entirely within the park. Henrys Woods offers very scenic hikes and the rest of the center grounds have multi-use trails. The center office is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The center’s main parking area on Belfast Road is open from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week for your enjoyment. The original land for the center was purchased by the Department of Forests and Waters from the City of Easton in 1959. In 1969, additional land was purchased using funds from Project 70. This brought the total land area of the center to its present size of 1,168 acres.

Budget Reconciliation on Hold - for Now
Before Hurricane Katrina roared through Louisiana and Mississippi, Congress was to reconvene in September with an agenda topped by cutting spending in domestic programs. In April, Congress directed House and Senate committees to cut $10 billion from Medicaid and up to $3 billion from the Food Stamp program over the next five years. The committees were to report reconciliation legislation to achieve these cuts by Sept. 16. But now, Congressional leaders have decided to change the reconciliation schedule and cost-cutting plans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has postponed committee action until after Columbus Day recess.
