By Benny Polacca After the federal government realized that “killing Native Americans was not working,” Relecom said, the Carlisle Indian Boarding School in Pennsylvania opened about 1879. “Educating the Native American children was estimated to cost less than killing them,” she said. But the boarding school students paid a price: “The children no longer had their own culture” or “a place to be,” the result of being removed from reservation life and barred from speaking their Native languages, Relecom said. The four-year-old exhibit in the museum’s East Gallery is called “Remembering Our Indian School Days: The Boarding School Experience” and will run until year’s end. Among many passages and quotes written on the exhibit’s walls are these words describing the goal of the boarding schools: “Assimilating, acculturating and americanizing children by standardizing their experiences of American culture, language and history.” Boarding school students spent mornings on academic learning and afternoons on vocational training, according to an exhibit video. In addition to being penalized for speaking their Native tongue, students were punished for other imperfections, such as not shining their uniform boots, the video said.

Establishing the School Westtown's original building, completed in 1799, in a photograph taken in 1864. Westtown School first opened it doors to students in May, 1799. Twenty boys and twenty girls, most in their teens but some as young as eight years old, entered the school from Quaker families primarily in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. The opening of Westtown School was the result of many years of decision-making, planning and fundraising by members of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Philadelphia Quakers established the boarding school to have a setting where the moral development of their children could be attended to along with their schooling. Land for the school was purchased in Chester County, Pennsylvania, at that time a full day's stage ride from Philadelphia. The distant location was an intentional effort by the Philadelphia Quakers to keep their children away from the influences of the city. The property of six hundred acres provided other advantages for the fledgling school, including clay for making bricks for the new building. To further prepare for the opening, supplies were gathered, and teachers and a superintendent and matron were hired and charged with running the school in a family-like atmosphere. The group of forty students who arrived in 1799 were joined by an additional twenty or so each month until the size of the school reached one hundred boys and one hundred girls.

School Desegregation and Civil Rights Stories:
Girard College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Following the Supreme Courts' Brown v. Board decision ending de jure segregation in all public school systems, Philadelphia moved slowly to carry out the court's ruling. In the public schools, several actions by the School Board including moving Northeast High School out of North Philadelphia, furthered segregation and limited opportunities for African-Americans children. In another public arena, the admissions policy of Girard College became one of the significant tests of school segregation in the City of Philadelphia. In his will dated February 16, 1830, Stephen Girard, a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, stipulated the establishment of a school for white males between six and eighteen years of age. Under the will, Girard having "sincerely at heart the welfare of the City of Philadelphia" left the principal part of his estate to "the Mayor, Alderman and citizens of Philadelphia, their successors and assigns" money for a number of charitable purposes of which the school was one. The purpose of these gifts was to foster "the prosperity of the City, and the health and comfort of its inhabitants." At the time of Girard's death, Philadelphia had fewer than 9,900 black inhabitants, who under then existing law had their citizenship rights decimated by regressive state legislation. In January 1848 the Girard College opened for the education of white male orphans.

Mrs. Borst helps to welcome Andrea and her father. "WHERE DO GRIER GIRLS COME FROM? Where do Grier students come from? Hmmm, very interesting, I would say from, all over the world! We are perhaps one of the few boarding schools around the United States, who have so many girls from all 5 continents in the world! I am originally from Karachi, Pakistan, but I was born and raised in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I went to an American School called Rahima Academy from KG to grade 10. Every year my school hosted a boarding school fair which involved all the different representatives from various states in America. I missed the Grier presentation, and later had to go and meet Mr. Wilson personally with my parents, and he impressed us to the limit, where we immediately chose Grier as my final choice. I always wanted to go to a boarding school, for the very reason that it makes you well aware about certain aspects in life, and also gives the female child living in Saudi an opportunity to grow and excel. One of the many reasons I also chose Grier was because it had an excellent Psychology program, which I intend to pursue through college.

Staying Put
Grier In The News
by Andrew Wilson,
Admissions at the Grier School
Staying Put
It’s 5:20 on this June morning. Birds make the only sounds I hear. I open the French doors to hear them better and feel the cool air on my legs. As I do this, I notice the bookshelf by the door where I keep yearbooks. There are fifteen there now, lined up as a record of my Grier past. When we moved into this house from another faculty apartment, there were only five books. Darcy and I had just been married two years and our baby Emily was barely two months old. I recall clearly our feeling of sitting in this large living room, a young family, thinking how lucky we were to try and fill up the space. The intervening years we have been quite successful at this. Emily is now nine and joined by her younger sisters Hope and Grace. We have furniture now, and clutter. The large room, which surrounded us with its bare expanse of wood back in 1992, now seems small. Or, maybe not small. It seems just right. For that matter, this school seems just right for me. When I arrived as "Senor Andres" to teach Spanish in 1986, my life had been a series of adventures. I freely told all who would listen that I had a case of wanderlust that was inextinguishable. In the ten years prior to arriving here, I had lived in New York, New Hampshire, France, Vermont, Madrid, Connecticut, and Montana. The year immediately preceding my arrival at Grier I hadn’t lived anywhere in a sense because my home had been on a sailing yacht named "Brendan’s Isle" which carried me for 12,000 miles of a sea voyage, stopping at various European countries before making the Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean.
