Boarding Schools
Beginning in the nineteenth century, boarding schools played a fundamental role in the programs designed by the U.S. government to foster the assimilation of native peoples into the mainstream of American society. Reformers and politicians who favored the policy of reservation allotment also advanced the concept of placing Indian children in residential schools where they would speak English, learn a vocation, and practice farming. Advocates of boarding schools argued that industrial training, in combination with several years of isolation from family, would diminish the influence of tribalism on a new generation of American Indians. For fifty years after the first federally administered residential school was established in 1879 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, thousands of Native American children and youth were sent to live, work, and be educated in the schools. Prior to Carlisle, most American Indians had little experience with the boarding-school concept. Some had attended mission schools, and three unique institutions had developed earlier in the century: the Choctaw Academy and the Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries. The Choctaw Academy in Kentucky, founded in 1825, was a male boarding school that Indian and white children attended. The academy was funded by proceeds from Choctaw land cessions in the Southeast during the 1820s. By 1851, the Cherokees in Oklahoma had opened male and female seminaries near Tahlequah to educate members of their nation. Cherokee students studied a curriculum that was patterned after that of Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts.

The Indian Industrial School at Carlisle PA was founded October 6, 1879 with the arrival of the first Native American Indian children from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux Agencies. Educating Indians was intended to "solve the Indian Problem" through assimilation - very well and frequently expressed sentiment of the policymakers and reformers. The experiment expanded from those first 78 recruits to over 10,700 students before the school was closed in 1918. These children came from over 145 American Indian nations. The brainstorm of Richard Henry Pratt, former Cavalry officer who had worked with Buffalo Soldiers and Indian scouts during the Indian Wars, Carlisle became the first off-reservation boarding school exclusively for Indian children. Pratt's mission is often described as "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" as he likened his assimilationist policies to the analogy of Christian baptism. "In Indian civilization I am a Baptist, because I believe in immersing the Indians in our civilization and when we get them under holding them there until they are thoroughly soaked."

    Boarding School as Last Refuge

    February 11, 1998 RealAudio 2.0 14.4
Governor Carlson's $12 million bonding proposal to fund boarding schools got another hearing at the capitol February 11. The schools would serve "at risk" juveniles who have had no major criminal problems. The proposal for Minnesota may be modeled after the Milton-Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH sparked debate over so-called residential education programs in 1994 when he suggested placing poor children in orphanages. Critics recalled images of mistreated street urchins in the film Oliver Twist while supporters praised the model as portrayed in the film classic Boys Town, about the work of the Reverend Edward J. Flanagan in Nebraska.

Unit Plan Activity 1 - Introduction to Boarding Schools - Time Allotted: 1 Day (90-minutes) The purpose of Native American boarding schools was to remove Native Americans from their home and cultures in order to change their identities and lifestyles to be like the "white man". Native American children were forced to think and act like the dominant white culture and were not allowed to practice their traditional ways. Not only were languages and beliefs changes, but appearances as well. Hair styles, clothing and even names and body languages were changed. The intention was to completely erase the Indian way of life. The first Indian boarding school was founded by Captain R. H. Pratt in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879. Within a few years, dozens were opened across the United States. (For more information on boarding schools, go to related links.) The first boarding school, Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, was founded by Captain Richard Henry Pratt. His belief in the inferiority of Indian ways to those of Whites led to his guiding principle, "kill the Indian and save the man." Between 1880-1890, dozens of other boarding schools opened across the United States, some on reservations, and others hundreds of miles away. Native American children did not receive a warm welcome at boarding school. For the most part, the boarding school experience was a deeply traumatic one. Native languages were forbidden to be spoken. Native clothing was replaced with uniforms. Children's hair was cut short. Indian names were replaced with Christian ones. Harsh punishments were given to those who broke rules. But most devastating, children lost contact with their families and their traditional ways of life, and were taught that their previous lives were inferior.

    http://www.iwchildren.org/reference/boardingbirth.htm
WHERE DID INDIAN MASCOTS COME FROM? In the mid 19th century a movement to retrain Indians in the image of European Americans was started. It was predicated on beliefs that Native Americans could be made human by separating children from their family, culture and heritage at an early age, pressed into training camps and "reeducated" with hard labor and discipline. Central to this philosophy was the belief that Native Americans were not really human beings but could adopt enough outward mannerisms of European Americans that they could function in roles delineated for them by whites. Well known for his supervision of Indian prisons in Florida, Captain Richard Henry Pratt was selected to head the most famous of boarding schools at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He continued the principles he learned while overseeing inmates at his school for children. His motto was, "Kill the Indian, save the man." The cemetery at the school will attest to the results of his methods for some inmates. In the model established by Captain Pratt boarding schools erupted all over the continent. They became a lucrative economic adventure for churches who received free Indian labor, government subsidies and cheap help from young men and women filled with missionary zeal to live and work the boarding schools. Primary to the operating principals of these institutions was to fashion Native children after a model conceived by whites who viewed them as flawed but curious creations. No matter the endeavor new roles were forced upon Indigenous captives fashioned in all manner of vision springing from European Americans who fundamentally believed Native People to be their inferiors. Native children were trained to serve whites, white interests, white society and entertain whites. At worst they were slaves at best they were mascots but they always were subordinated to whites.

Commemorating Survival and Loss at the Carlisle Indian School by Stephanie Anderson
As published in CENTRAL PA magazine, May 2000 In the middle of a bitter night in October 1879, a train puffed slowly across the last few feet of track and eased into Carlisle after a long journey from Dakota Territory. On board were 82 children from the Lakota people, whom most European Americans knew as the Sioux. Hungry and tired, they rose from their seats one by one, pulled their blankets tighter around them and stepped onto the small platform at the station. Their eyes, adjusting to the darkness, met a sea of strangers staring back at them. Just three years after the Battle of the Little Bighorn, hundreds of townspeople gathered with necks craned to glimpse the "exotic" Indian children from what was still regarded as the Wild West. During the next 39 years, American Indian children became a familiar sight in Carlisle. While their arrival was little more than a curiosity to the townspeople, their departure from their homes, families and way of life marked momentous change in the lives of the children, their parents and their tribes. From 1879 to 1918, approximately 12,000 Native-American children attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, on the grounds of Carlisle Barracks, to become educated in the ways of European-American culture. They came from all corners of the United States - some even from Puerto Rico and the Philippines - and from more than 140 tribes. Some came willingly; others did not. And while many survived, some did not.
