Penguins in Antarctica

Penguins are unique birds in that they do not fly. Their wings are adapted as swimming flippers by their wing bones being flattened and rather solidly joined so that they are very useful for swimming (up to 30 miles per hour). Penguins often look like they are flying when viewed under water.
Most penguins spend the majority of their life at sea and return to land to reproduce. Getting to and from their reproductive areas (called rookeries) on land can be quite a walk but when there is snow to traverse, they often sled downhill to make quick descents.
On land, penguins walk (often in straight lines) to and from the ocean between their nesting colonies and their feeding grounds in the ocean (left). These trips can be only a few hundred yards over rocky beaches (like the picture above left) or they can be miles inland, often over snow and ice. Penguins tend to follow the same paths to and from the ocean to feed and bathe. When there is snow in their path they leave footprints (right). Most penguin species spend the year at sea without staying with their mate

  • Creature Feature We're here, we're queer, we're penguins The romantic story of Wendell and Cass, tuxedo-clad life partners, as told by their keeper. By Suzy Hansen NEW YORK The 32 African black-footed penguins on display at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn, have been through a lot together. Last year, for instance, stray cats cornered and then threatened to attack the two-foot-tall, tuxedo-clad birds. Aquarium workers hired an exterminator to deal with the problem, and animal-lover chaos ensued. Most enraged in the skirmish were the pro-kitty locals whose hand-outs kept the felines skulking around the boardwalk and the beachfront aquarium. And then there are the tensions that arise among penguins anywhere, tensions that flow from the pursuit of love and, in a penguin sort of way, marriage. Inside this little man-made concrete exhibit designed to simulate the rocky islands off South Africa from which they originate philandering female penguins angle for better nests; jilted lovers pick up and move after a love-interest freezes them out; and love triangles are inevitable, complete with messy fallout and recrimination.

    http://octopus.gma.org/surfing/antarctica/penguin.html
    Penguin Adaptation
Penguins are designed for life in the sea. Some species spend as much as 75% of their lives in the water. (They lay their eggs and to raise their chicks on land.) Heavy, solid bones act like a diver's weight belt, allowing them to stay underwater. Their wings, shaped like flippers, help them "fly" underwater at speeds up to 15 mph. A streamlined body, paddle-like feet, insulating blubber, and watertight feathers all add to their efficiency and comfort underwater. They also have a remarkable deep-diving ability. In addition to blubber for insulating warmth, penguins have stiff, tightly packed feathers (up to 70 per sq. in.) that overlap to provide waterproofing. They coat their feathers with oil from a gland near the tail to increase impermeability. Black and white countershading makes them nearly invisible to predators from above and below. Like most birds, penguins have little or no sense of smell (a boon for those in a crowded penguin rookery!) Like other birds, their sense of taste is also limited. Their vision appears to be better when they are underwater. Scientists suspect they may be nearsighted on land. Penguins are considered to be the most social of birds. Rookeries may contain thousands of individuals. (As many as 24 million penguins visit the Antarctic continent!) Even at sea, they tend to swim and feed in groups.

    Something's coming...
Using blogs and RSS feeds as news sources, with newspapers and television news supplementary to them, gives one a perspective on underlying sociological currents that would be missed if one solely watched TV or read newspapers. Using the Internet to cross-reference and research world events has become something of a past-time for me, and something I do quite regularly.
All of that to say that what I have seen of world events recently is incredibly disturbing. Forget natural disasters for a moment…these will simply be a catalyst for fundamental and world-shattering change.
The War on Terror has allowed the US government to bring about the beginnings of a police state. In New York, subway passengers are routinely searched (something like 1 out of every 5) for their protection. Of course, the belief is that Americans need protecting from external forces (re: islamic terrorists…or whatever the politically-correct terminology is this week). How soon, do you think, will there be a move to begin protecting Americans from more internal threats…and let’s be honest, more tangible?

    Into The Abyss?
    By Les Line
    Facing threats from oil spills,
    overfishing and alien species,
many penguins are living on the edge
WHEN THE CARGO VESSEL Cordigliera sank in heavy seas off the eastern Cape of Good Hope last November with 29 crewmen aboard, a thousand tons of heavy bunker oil gushed from the broken hull and formed a large slick. After the oil drifted along the South African coast for days, capricious winds blew swaths of the gunk into Algoa Bay near Port Elizabeth, home of half of the world's remaining African penguins.
Once known as jackass penguins because they bray like angry donkeys, these birds were already in trouble. Found only along the coast of southern Africa, the species has plunged from 2 million adults at the turn of the century to only 180,000, and the population continues to slide toward extinction at a rate of 15 percent a decade. Historians blame the early decline on several factors, including excessive egg harvests and commercial fishing for sardines and anchovies, the penguins' main prey.
The African penguin's problems in recent years, however, are due largely to oil pollution. In the late 1960s, when many ships grew too large for the Suez Canal, traffic around the Cape surged and oil-smeared penguins began showing up on South African beaches with alarming frequency. Most of the oil comes from routine but illegal tank-washing and bilge-pumping by passing ships. What conservationists fear most, though, is a catastrophic spill at one of the major breeding sites.
