The School Song

Primary Music Theory

The school is in need of a song. The class has been working very hard on their music theory in the last few months. As a result, students have reached a point where they are ready to create a complex musical composition. Their task is to compose the school song.
Poetry Pals

Elementary Art / Poetry

Students create the components for a slideshow featuring their own poetry, illustrations, and music. This lesson uses auditory (singing), visual (writing the melody on the board), and kinesthetic (signing and clapping) learning styles.
Instruments of the Orchestra

Elementary School Math

This project introduces math concepts using music and rhyme. Using GarageBand, students compose music for what would otherwise be an abstract concept in their minds. This project is a culmination of a unit on the various instrument families in the orchestra. Keynote presentation also available.

Pen pals meet nine years after first letter

By ANN GORMAN, CORRESPONDENT
Illinois State Journal Register
PETERSBURG - To Molly Schoenherr, strolling with her friend Olena Breyman through Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site last Saturday seemed like nothing short of a miracle. "It's unbelievable," Molly said as she took Olena through the village's reconstructed log cabins and explained what life was like for the pioneers who lived there. Molly, whose family lives at Lake Petersburg, is studying deaf education at MacMurray College in Jacksonville. She began writing Olena, or Helen as the Schoenherrs call her, when she was 10 years old. Molly's mother, Diana, read about the Soviet-American Pen Pal Exchange in a Girl Scout newsletter and signed her up.

ENGL 12 Thematic Course: The Family
The advantage of the "family" theme for English 12 is that, in David Bartholomae and Anothony Petrosky's terms, it allows students throughout the term to "study a single problem, one easily located within the[ir] immediate experience and knowledge ... using the basic methods of university inquiry" ( Facts, Artifacts, and Counterfacts , 1986, pp29-30). This course will explore family-related issues in the Social Sciences, the Humanities, and the Natural Sciences. Throughout the course, students will compose several kinds of academic writing tasks (and some non-academic ones), to challenge them to employ different rhetorical strategies and to engender discussion about various discourse conventions
    Unit I: Social Sciences (Psychology)
This is the unit submitted as part of this Herschel award entry. The goals for this unit are: (1) to familiarize the students with the Social Science discourse community and its disciplinary practices by doing as well as by reading and writing; (2) to introduce students to academic discourse through a subject in which they have the authority of experiential knowledge; and (3) to build cohesion and relations among the group members. In-class writing, discussion, some reading, the two feeders, and "fieldwork" will contribute toward the Unit Paper. That final paper presents the group's method and findings in a limited experiment designed to test a hypothesis about the impact of sibling birth order on personality, by trying to predict birth order when it isn't known.

Assistant Professor- Family Life Specialist Parenting Is Challenging Parenting is a 24-hour-a-day job that presents constant challenges. Yet, most parents have no training. No one can MAKE a child eat, sleep, listen or go potty! Kids are kids. No wonder parents are so often frustrated. These four steps can help you avoid the frustration-to-anger trap. 1. Stop, separate and breathe. This is a crucial first step. Actually saying: "STOP! I’m getting angry!" to yourself and the child can be very effective. Take a few deep breaths or do a mundane chore. Taking your mind off the problem for a few minutes can help you gain control of your emotions.

    Pen Parents
The loss of a child is a terrible, crushing blow to any parent. Whatever the reason, accidental, intentional, or through the actions of others, dealing with the reality that your baby will no longer be there is more than a lot of parents can deal with.
Today's FamSite is one that can help, or try to help, with that grief and sense of loss. It is called Pen Parents, and is a support network of other parents that are going through the same life experience. Through the use of email, communication is established via this site, to give a parent a chance to express their grief about the loss of their child. There is also a pen-pal type of service that helps match up parents who have lost children through similar circumstances. There is a very touching page where you can write to your loved one, and express your feelings.
Dealing with death is never pleasant. My wife and I lost a foster daughter to murder over 10 years ago. The hurt is still there. A site like this may have helped us at that time. It may help you, or someone you know today. Please keep this site in mind.
