Peace and friendship go hand in hand. A penpal living in a different country can be a very special kind of friend. The sites below list people from around the world looking for someone to write to. As with any contact with strangers, we recommend parental guidance for minors. acePal - People of all ages. Write A Senior Citizen - Includes many veterans! The origami crane and the white dove have both become powerful symbols for peace. The dove and crane crafts featured at the links below are perfect for classrooms, scout troops or to make as gifts. This project can be even more meaningful if you write your personal wishes for a better world on the wings. Don't forget to save these for holiday decorations!

    • Grade level: Upper or Lower Elementary
    • Subject Area: Language Arts
Brief Description Students will begin communicating over e-mail with students around the world in preparation for future collaborative activities. This lesson can provide a great supplement to traditional language arts activities, such as writing for an audience, reading for editing, and writing a journal, as well as introduce students to different perspectives and points of view. The concept of students as global citizens and appreciation for people of different cultures, societies, and countries are stressed in these types of activities, as students come to know and respect other students outside their local community. A personal connection between two students can help each understand each others' point of view and broaden their thinking on local, national, and global issues of mutual interest.
    Objectives Students will:
    • Learn to communicate using text - reading, writing, editing, etc.

WAYS FOR COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL GROUPS, COLLEGES, LIBRARIES, THE ARMED FORCES, AND RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS TO GET INVOLVED
"If schools are operating at maximum efficiency, they are responsible for about 40 to 50 percent of what a child learns. The other 50 to 60 percent of learning comes from the family and the community. Without close articulation of and involvement with the family and larger community, schools will ultimately fail.
    Ted Sanders
    President, Southern Illinois University

Community, cultural, and religious groups, libraries, members of law enforcement and the armed services, and colleges and universities offer a wealth of talent and support for better schools. These community assets can be instrumental in addressing issues facing educators. On the following pages are some ideas of how groups can solve the seven issues most troublesome to our education system.
