Vol. 6. No. 2 M-1 September 2002 Return to Table of Contents Return to Main Page EFL/ESL Portal Sites An Attempt at a Comparison
Introduction
The abundance of EFL/ESL sites on the Internet may surpass even Internet-savvy teachers' expectationsa search for either "EFL", "ESL", or "English" will provide the user with a number of sites, made by both professionals and amateurs, individuals and institutions, directed at teachers or students, or teachers and students alike. Most probably, it would be an insurmountable task to try and browse all such search results, evaluate the websites, and decide which of them best suit the user's expectations. This work is an attempt at a comparative review of a few "portal" siteswhich, in general, means sites which offer features for both students and teachers, which cater to many aspects of language learning, provide language practice in many language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing), include grammar and vocabulary quizzes and explanations, and which are usually available in a self-study mode. Nine such sites are reviewed with the help of a matrix, with functions listed down the left side and site names across the top, so that readers might get a clear picture of what each site comprises. The features chosen for review are related to the following basic areas: Student-oriented functions, teacher-oriented functions, content, general issues, and help facilities. It is hoped that the features and the matrix will serve as useful guidelines for teachers trying to evaluate major EFL/ESL sites.

Ten Unique Resource Sites for Educators
Those of us who spend a great deal of time online often stumble across valuable Web sites that contain unique resources we think many educators would like to know about. The list below represents nine of those sites; online resources guaranteed to save you time and effort as you search for new ways to integrate technology into your curriculum. Included: Nine Web sites that provide a gold mine of useful education resources. According to the Web Characterization Project , a study done by the Online Computer Library Center, the World Wide Web contained more than 9 million unique Web sites in 2002 representing a 231 percent increase in the number of Web sites since 1998. And experts estimate that thousands of new sites are added to the Web every day. That constant growth makes it nearly impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff, much less to keep track of all the excellent educational sites available at any given time. On The Internet Technology in the Classroom Article TECHNOLOGY ARTICLE Ten Great Web Sites for Young Children The Internet offers many great resources and the preschool and early primary years are not too early to introduce kids to the Net. What's out there? How do people find it? This week, Education World offers ten well-designed sites that will make the classroom "an exciting and vibrant environment." "Good teaching and the Internet forge a powerful combination for learning," Joyce L. Morris, Ed.D., writes. "More than any other tool, technology can do more to transform the classroom into an exciting and vibrant learning environment." Morris teaches technology at the University of Vermont. Learning opportunities on the Internet seem endless. Young children may hunt for hidden letters and color them in, play interactive games or read interactive stories, submit original stories to other sites, and communicate with kids in classrooms around the world. The Web sites below are a small sampling of what the Internet can offer young kids. Any one of the sites might contribute to a lively and exhilarating learning environment.
