The Thirty Tyrants

Elsewhere on the Web
When Athens surrendered at the end of the Peloponnesian War, democracy was replaced by the oligarchic rule of the Thirty Tyrants (hoi triakonta). From 404-403 B.C., during the start of the period known as the Spartan hegemony (404-371 B.C.), hundreds of Athenians were killed, thousands exiled, and the number of the citizens was severely reduced. In the end, the Thirty were overthrown by an exiled Athenian general, Thrasybulus. Terms of Athens' Surrender
According to the terms of the surrender of Athens at the end of the Peloponnesian War, the Long Walls and fortifications of the Piraeus were destroyed, the Athenian fleet was lost, exiles were recalled, and Athens was under the leadership of Sparta.

Athens and Sparta were both powerful poli, and each wanted to spread their way of life. Sparta attacked Athens in 431 BC , beginning the brutal 27-year-long Peloponnesian War. Sparta eventually defeated Athens by building blockade around the walls of the city. This is called a siege. The people of Athens could not leave to get supplies or food from the countryside. Faced with starvation, Athens surrendered to Sparta in 404 BC The Peloponnesian robbed Athens of its Golden Age. Great thinkers and teachers lived in Athens during and after the war but the era of support for new ideas and the spirit of democracy had passed. NEXT: Greek Philosophy To cite this page:

Historical Commentary on the Peloponnesian War By Kurt Kuhlmann
BACKGROUND
What is now known as the Peloponnesian War was actually the second war between the Athenian and Spartan coalitions. The conflict between Athens and Sparta had its roots in the Persian Wars earlier in the fifth century B.C. After the Persian expedition led by Xerxes against Greece had been repulsed in 479, the Athenians assumed the leadership of the war against Persia in the Greek coastlands of Asia Minor. The Delian League, formed in 478 as an alliance against Persia, assumed the form of an empire as the Athenians began using force to prevent any of their "allies" from withdrawing from the League. The First Peloponnesian War began in 460 when Megara withdrew from the Spartan alliance and allied itself with Athens. The Athenians built long walls for the Megarans to their port at Nisaea, thereby earning the everlasting enmity of Megara's old rival Corinth. At the height of their success in this war, the Athenians, allied with Megara and Argos, controlled all of Central Greece except for Thebes. Fortune turned against them in 454 when the destruction of a large Athenian force aiding an Egyptian revolt against Persia led to unrest and rebellions throughout the Athenian Empire. In 451 Athens and Sparta signed a "Thirty-Years Peace" in which Athens agreed to abandon its alliance with Argos, while Sparta promised to give up its alliance with Thebes. Athens was finally able to turn its full attention to the Persians, and in 449 Persia recognized the independence of the Greek cities and agreed to peace.

Classical Age
Dr. J's Illustrated Persian Wars The Battle Of Marathon (490 BC) Herodotus assures us that the Greek victory that stunned both sides was the result of a shrewd battleplan: the great Athenian general Miltiades chose not to deploy his troops in the traditional way, with the bulk of his men in the middle of a phalanx of soldiers. Instead, he thinned out the ranks in the center, giving the Persians a false sense of imminent victory. After the Persians easily broke through the ranks, they were swarmed by Greek soldiers attacking from the flanks (Athenians from one side and Plataeans from the other). Herodotus also tells us that for the first time Athenian slaves were freed so that they could fight for the Athenian cause. After the battle, the Athenians built this treasury (photo upper left) at Delphi to hold all their votive offerings to the oracle. The Battle of Marathon spawned legends immediately: witnesses swore that the ghost of Theseus (mythical king of Athens) loomed over the field, giving confidence to his countrymen; the messenger Phidippides is said to have run into the god Pan on his way to ask for help from the Spartans and received the god's help instead (and too, the old story about how he died after running the equivalent of 26 miles to deliver news of the victory at Marathon is not supported by any ancient source...); and some say that the clash of arms can still be heard today on the Plain of Marathon at night.
