HISTORY OF THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR
Thucydides - Author
Rex Warner - Translator
M. Finley - Introduction Buy now View basket Book: Paperback 'My work is not a piece of writing designed to meet the taste of an immediate public, but was done to last for ever.' Written four hundred years before the birth of Christ, this detailed contemporary account of the long life-and-death struggle between Athens and Sparta stands an excellent chance of fulfilling its author's ambitious claim. Thucydides himself (c.460-400 BC) was an Athenian and achieved the rank of general in the earlier stages of the war. He applied thereafter a passion for accuracy and a contempt for myth and romance in compiling this factual record of a disastrous conflict. 'Arguably the greatest historical work of classical times' Steven Weinberg, University of Texas Translated by Rex Warner with an Introduction and Notes by M. I. Finley

Thucydides famously declared his intention to write the history of the war we now call the Peloponnesian War at its very outset, "in the belief that it was going to be a great war and more worth writing about than any of those which had taken place in the past." History has shared his assessmentin no small measure because of the power of his own masterful telling of the story and the philosophical depth of his commentary on its events. It was, after all, a war that spanned 27 years and in the end destroyed all the major combatants and their civilization. It contains powerful examples of successful and unsuccessful periods of civil-military relations. It demonstrates the "revolutions in military affairs" necessitated by encounters with novel weapons, tactics, and operational concepts. It dramatically shows the relationship of military power to economics, cultural assumptions, and forms of government.

By Donald Kagan
Penguin Books, New York The security of the two classic Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta, depended on alliances and understandings with other regional powers. In retrospect, the jealousies and political passions stirred up by this complicated system of political and military relationships gives the war between Athens and Sparta a sense of inevitability. Donald Kagan, in his exhaustive study of the great classic Greek civil war, does a brilliant job in explaining just how those webs of power and influence unraveled. The Greek conflict with Persia left Athens as the preeminent regional naval power. Athenian triremes, which had destroyed the Persian fleet, guarded an empire based on trade, political and military intimidation and genuine democracy. Oligarchs, the great families and the rich, found their power challenged by Athenian-style democracy.

The History of the Peloponnesian War
by Thucydides
The Peloponnesian War broke out in 431 BC and continued intermittently for twenty-seven years. It pitted an all-powerful land force (Sparta and its allies) against a supremely powerful naval force (Athens). Thucydides actually participated in this conflict, a war which he realized would have a greater influence on the history of Greece than any other war. The History of the Peloponnesian War is true to its title: it is a story of battles and sieges, of alliances hastily made and soon broken, and most importantly, of the behavior of people as the war dragged on and on, and the inevitable "corrosion of the human spirit."

Excerpt from The History of the Peloponnesian War Thucydides recorded the history of the Peloponnesian War, the long-running and intermittent conflict between the two major powers in the 5th-century Greek world—Sparta and Athens. Though Thucydides was an Athenian and fought for his city state—indeed, he endured a 20-year exile for a failure over which he had no control—his work is noticeably objective, sceptical, and rational, having no truck with the widespread contemporary belief in the gods. This excerpt is from the famous funeral oration of Pericles, the leading citizen of Athens, who presided over the golden age of Classical Greek culture, and is a statement of pride in the achievements of the Athenian polis.
