They would learn how to handle conflict in a way that would fit their age level. In the all-school level, I would establish a program that would speak to grades 1 through 12, depending on your school. This program would include teaching the children how to mediate with their peers. Then I would teach the teachers about Mediation and how they can man the program themselves without my assistance. My experience has taught me that this is usually a three year program. PEER (SCHOOL) MEDIATION MY TRAINING IN THIS AREA Basic 40-hour training at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN MY EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA As Executive Director of Nueces County Dispute Resolution Services, I established a multi-year contract with the Corpus Christi Independent School District which is still in place. First, conflict management skills were taught in all classes. Then students were elected in each class to be Mediators. We then taught the elected children in each school how to mediate their peer's conflicts. This was a 9 to 12 hour process. Next, we held a 36-hour Training of Trainers where we taught the teachers how to teach the children these skills. Our intent with the teachers was to teach them this program so it could be firmly established in their school. They, then, would no longer need us, thus allowing them autonomy.

In this way she builds the self-confidence of her students and they listen better and complete their work. Extrinsic motivators include a good behavior point system and rewards of special treats for those that follow directions or complete their "seatwork". These methods of motivation set the standard for what the teacher expects of the students in a simple way in which they can understand. The students know in advance that if they do what they're supposed to do, whether it is good behavior or completing their work, they'll be rewarded as a result. Thus, the students are motivated to take care of their business.

Mediation in the Schools. ERIC Digest. Concern about violence in the schools has made the study of conflict and conflict management an urgent matter for educators today. Mediation is one form of conflict management that is getting widespread attention in schools across America. Mediation involves a neutral third person, called a mediator, who assists the disputants in resolving their problem with the consent of all parties. It offers a risk free way to settle disputes for the parties involved in the dispute. No agreement, no deal. HOW SHOULD SCHOOLS ADDRESS THE PROBLEM OF VIOLENCE? Conflict is a normal, natural part of everyday life. The word conflict has its roots in the Latin word conflictus, meaning "striking together." Despite the violent overtones of its Latin translation, conflict and violence are not synonymous. However, unresolved and lingering conflict frequently leads to violence, interfering with productivity and the quality of life in schools and the community. Extensive data illustrate that instances of violence, including bias-related violence and disciplinary problems in schools around the country, are severely interfering with the learning environment of students.
