Chairman's Annual Letter
July 2005
July is always an exciting month in a teaching hospital with the arrival of our new interns, fellows and faculty. It marks the beginning of the new academic year, and is a time of intellectual rebirth. This year our twenty new interns represent fourteen medical schools from all across the country. These enthusiastic, energetic, and dazzlingly intelligent young people represent the future of American medicine. Our responsibility is to assure them of the finest training and the best mentorship imaginable, and turn them into the scientists, teachers and leaders of tomorrow. Patient care, teaching and research: which is the most important? I can never decide. I am proud that we do each of them so well, and am proudest to be able to dedicate our efforts to our new young interns and fellows who put their trust in us just as parents put their trust in our care of their children.

Malnutrition
Malnutrition may be due to inadequate food absorption or inadequate food intake (inadequate supply, increased requirements). The diagnosis of malnutrition is not always apparent as in severe cases. It depends on an accurate dietary history, evaluation of height, weight, head circumference and past rates of growth, measurement of midarm circumference and skinfold thickness and other tests. Acute nutritional disturbances: water and electrolytes. Chronic malnutrition: deficits of more than a single nutrient. There is usually associated immunologic insufficiency (white blood cell count < 1500/mm3 and anergy to skin test antigens).
Marasmus (Infantile Atrophy, Inanition, Athrepsia)
In most cases, marasmus is due to inadequate caloric intake, but may also be due to metabolic abnormalities or congenital malformations. Clinically, there is failure to gain weight followed by weight loss and finally emaciation. Fat is loss last from the cheeks. The abdomen may be flat or distended. There is muscle atrophy and hypotonia. The basal metabolic rate is reduced. The infant may be constipated or have the "starvation type" of diarrhea with mucus.
Protein Malnutrition (Protein-Calorie Malnutrition, Kwashiorkor)

Chicago Pediatricians
Our group of pediatric specialists has served the children of the Chicagoland area for more than 70 years. First and foremost, we are your child's advocate and his/her well-being is our major concern. We are interested in your child's physical, emotional and developmental needs.
All of the pediatricians in our office are board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics. We are faculty members of Northwestern University Medical School and are engaged in clinical research that has helped set policy and standards of care for all children. All of us are active staff members of Children's Memorial Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Evanston Northwestern Hospital. We have a truly outstanding office staff who assist in the care of our patients.
Most children will have approximately 4 illnesses per year, especially if they are in contact with other children. Many of these illnesses are viral in nature. If after examining your child, the pediatrician feels that the illness is viral, suggestions will be given on how to make your child feel more comfortable. Antibiotics will not eradicate viral infections and, in fact, may make them worse. In addition, we only utilize laboratory and radiological services when we feel it's necessary to aid in a diagnosis or treatment plan.
We have developed a network of outstanding hospitals and subspecialists throughout Chicago to help care for your child when such services are warranted. We feel that our office is your child's "medical home" and that all matters concerning care should be coordinated through us. This will insure the best care for your child.
