104. Definition, Description, And Prevention Of SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Safe bedding recommendations for SIDS prevention by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the American Academy of pediatrics, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
http://www.all4moms.com/articles/SIDS_prevention.htm
What is SIDS?
SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is defined as the sudden, unexpected and unexplained death of any infant or young child. When surveyed about what they would have appreciated in those chilling moments after the death, SIDS parents responded with several concrete requests they were often too stunned to make at the time (Journal of Emergency Medicine, Sep 1997):
To hold their baby one last time
To have the clothing returned to them
To have a print or mold of their baby's hand
To have a lock of hair.
These poignant requests underline the tragedy of SIDS, the most common cause of infant death in developed countries. SIDS accounts for about half of the deaths that occur between one month and one year of age.
Can SIDS be prevented?
There are already several important preventive measures available. Events that occur even before the baby is born affect the risk of SIDS. Anything that causes less oxygen to get to the baby in the uterus will increase his or her risk. On average, smoking during pregnancy as well as using drugs of abuse such as cocaine or heroine. The media often focus on "crack babies," but tobacco use continues in approximately 25% of all pregnancies in the United States (J Pharmacol Exp Ther, Jun 1998). Nicotine exposure is responsible for many more SIDS deaths than any other drug of abuse, including cocaine. Stopping smoking during pregnancy is the most immediate step we can take to save infants' lives.

Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong Focus on Science Pediatric Divisions ... History of the Department The Department of Pediatrics/ (Strong Memorial Hospital) at the University of Rochester Medical Center is the referral center for all children requiring complex care. We are proud that all community-based pediatricians are members of our clinical faculty. The and the Center for Pediatric Biomedical Research (CPBR the Rochester General Hospital , Highland Hospital, Park Ridge Hospital, and Monroe Community Hospital. The Rochester General Hospital is an important site for faculty and housestaff activities. All neonatal services are coordinated throughout the community and throughout the region as are all other subspecialty services. The training of the next generation of pediatricians and pediatricians/internists is a major priority of our department. Approximately 15-20% of the graduating medical school classes at the University of Rochester enter either Pediatrics or Medicine/Pediatrics for their residencies. Our residency training programs provide an outstanding balance between traditional in-hospital-based and community-based experiences in the offices of the community pediatricians, health centers, and other community-based settings. Unique opportunities for educational enhancements for residents include: The Focus on Science and Pediatric Links to the Community (PLC) . The Focus on Science effort encourages each faculty person and resident to perform substantive investigation about a child health issue through a series of outstanding visiting professorships. The Pediatric Links to the Community (PLC) is a unique program where our trainees learn firsthand about children in the community who live in poverty. The PLC received the 2001 American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award. The program is one of several awarded a multi-million dollar grant from the Dyson Foundation to promote pediatric training in the community.
