William J. Klish, M.D., is Professor of Pediatrics, Head of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of the Nutrition and Gastroenterology Department at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Dr. Klish has served as chair of the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. klish@yourbabytoday.com . While Dr. Klish cannot respond to each individual inquiry, we will post answers to the most common questions here. Q: The past three or four days my 8-month-old seems uninterested when I try to feed him vegetables. After three or four spoonfuls he turns his head away and refuses to open his mouth. I've tried green and orange veggies. Should I keep trying? Try to disguise them?
A: All infants are suspicious of new foods. They react not only to changes in flavor but also to changes in texture. It's important, however, for mothers to present a wide spectrum of foods to their infants. If your baby rejects a particular food, wait a few days and try it again. Foods should be tried four or five times before giving up on them. Disguising the flavor defeats the purpose of introducing new foods. By being patient, you will do your child a great favor by not only expanding her choices, but by fostering a lifetime enjoyment of foods as well. Past Questions:

Acne, Antibiotics, and the Common Cold People who use either oral OR topical antibiotics to treat their acne are more than twice as likely to catch colds, according to a study in the Sept. 2005 Archives of Dermatology . If the results of this study hold up to further investigation, it may change the way acne is treated. Here, the researchers analyzed the experi- ence of over 100,000 people with acne over a fifteen year period. About ¾ of them were treated with anti- biotics such as topical erythromycin or clindamycin and/or oral minocycline, doxycycline, or tetracycline. Those who received any of the antibiotics for at least 6 weeks had more than double the chance of catching colds during the entire following year. The common cold is a virus -not directly affected by antibiotics. But antibiotics, in addition to taking care of harmful bacte- ria, also attack beneficial bacteria that are part of our body's defense system, apparently resulting in the increased frequency of viral infections . It surprises me that ... continued Yesterday's Daily Dose of Dr. Greene

INTRODUCTION. Because children are growing and developing bones, teeth, muscles and blood, they need more nutritious food in proportion to their weight in comparison to an adult. Malnutrition, hence becomes very common when they have a prolonged poor appetite, or are fed with a limited number of foods which may be nutritionally poor foods.
