Purpose:
The goal of this work is to understand Zn metabolism, homeostasis and status in a variety of human populations. Research has focused on various populations at possible risk for Zn deficiency, including breastfed infants, children, pregnant and lactating women and communities in many developing countries from Sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America and Asia. Studies have also been conducted in well nourished populations in this country in order to better understand Zn homeostasis. Specialized facilities or techniques: Trace metal analyses of biological samples using Atomic Absoprtion Spectrophotometry (AAS)
Stable isotope analyses of Zn, Ca, and Fe isotopes by ICP-MS

Individuals who have completed residency training may apply for a combined clinical and research fellowship in nutrition. Clinical training consists of 6 to 12 months of clinical service in pediatric nutrition and in related areas in adult medicine as appropriate to the trainee's interests. Content areas include inpatient nutrition support; outpatient assessment and treatment of growth and nutrition problems; breastfeeding assessment and management; and obesity assessment and treatment. Trainees also have rotations with subspecialty clinics for conditions with nutrition-related problems, including cystic fibrosis, short gut syndrome and feeding intolerance, liver disease, diabetes and others.
Support for up to 3 years of research training is also available through a National Institutes of Health-funded Nutrition Training Grant (T32 DK07658-11; PI: Nancy F. Krebs, MD). The objective of this program is to provide research training in the nutritional sciences to both physicians and basic scientists who demonstrate a commitment to a career in nutrition research. Children attended clinic visits twice in which they underwent anthropometric assessment, turned in three-day food records and provided urine and breath pentane samples. Breath pentane is a hydrocarbon gas that is a measure of lipid peroxidation of n-6 fatty acids, a measure of oxidative stress. Urine samples were also used as a measure of oxidative stress. Markers of oxidative stress were not significantly different between the placebo and supplement groups at day 1 or 21. The oxidative stress indicators of the healthy children appeared to be similar to those of healthy adults and were not influenced by antioxidant supplementation. The diet records indicate that the children in the study consumed diets similar to the average for children in the United States.

Introduced by Wilder in 1921, this diet has been shown to decrease the number and severity of seizures for more than two-thirds of children who have tried it. The diet consists of approximately 70% to 90% of energy from fat, with the remaining energy from protein and carbohydrate. There are two main types of the diet. The first is the classic ketogenic diet that produces ketosis by limiting intake of carbohydrate and protein to less than 10% of energy combined. The second type is a medium chain triglyceride diet (MCT), which uses medium-chain triglyceride fat to produce ketosis. The MCT diet allows for a greater percentage of intake from carbohydrate and protein (approximately 29% combined). While the benefits of the diet have been well established, little is known about the nutritional risks of the diet and potential impact upon growth.

2002 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System PedNSS is a nutrition surveillance system developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). PedNSS monitors the general health and nutritional status of low-income U.S. children up to the age of 18 years who participate in federally funded public health programs. The system is intended to characterize trends and patterns in key indicators of nutritional status. This information can be used for program planning and targeting. The indicators monitored by PedNSS include demographics, birth weight, weight, height/length, anemia and breastfeeding. Also included are TV watching and smoking in household (Ohio does not collect data on these indicators). The Ohio Department of Health has participated in the PedNSS system since 1995. Data currently being reported by Ohio to PedNSS are from the Ohio WIC Program. Thus, the Ohio PedNSS system currently includes information only for infants and children up to age 5 years. Information is in .PDF format. The free

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 30, 1998 Most mothers and mothers-to-be are seriously uninformed about five basic infant nutritional practices, according to a national survey conducted by The Institute of Pediatric Nutrition. Most of the 323 women surveyed are uncertain about a range of nutritional issues including: when to introduce cow's milk into the infant's diet, whether fruit juice has any nutritional value, and how to deal with a low milk supply during breastfeeding. Additionally, the survey shows that mothers misinterpret normal spitting up as an allergic reaction and mistakenly believe iron-fortified formula causes constipation misconceptions that can lead to improper feeding decisions. An analysis of survey results shows that only five percent of mothers and mothers-to-be were able to provide accurate answers indicating they understood all of the following: Cow's milk should not be introduced when the baby starts eating solids.
