The Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) and the Pregnancy Surveillance System (PNSS) are program-based surveillance systems that monitor the nutritional status of low-income infants, children, and women in federally funded maternal and child health programs.
PedNSS data represent more than 5 million children from birth to age 5. PNSS data represent approximately 750,000 pregnant and postpartum women. These surveillance systems provide data that describe prevalence and trends of nutrition, health, and behavioral indicators for mothers and children. Surveillance data available at this site include national data tables with contributor-specific data on health indicators. Data reports for individual contributors are not available at this site. These surveillance data can be used for program planning, management, and evaluation; for the development of health and nutrition interventions; and to monitor progress toward the

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Specific Diagnoses - Ketogenic Diet
Is the ketogenic diet being used with young children? Has TPN been used for children on the ketogenic diet, and if so what kind of start up is recommended? Has anyone used crackers or cereal to increase variety of textures? A pediatric neurologist has prescribed the ketogenic diet for a 14 month old and a 7 month old. The 14 month old has recently been sick and vomiting, and when the mother called the hospital she was told to add more Polycose and give it some time. The child is already below the 5th percentile for both weight and length. Is the ketogenic diet being used with kids this young? Yes, the ketogenic diet is being used with infants under age 2 years, more now than in the past. There is some literature to support the use of the ketogenic diet for infants (1,2). The ketogenic diet is very complicated to manage successfully and definitely requires a multi-disciplinary approach. There are centers in many parts of the country that have developed programs with guidelines to treat seizures with the ketogenic diet. Infants and children who start the diet are frequently below the 5th percentile for weight and length, often due to the negative impact of the intractable seizures on being able to eat.

Everything a 3rd year medical student needs to know about nutrition"
(At least to get started).
Prepared for the students of SUNY-Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
These NUTRITION NOTES were prepared at the request of Dr. Laurence Finberg, formerly Chairman and Professor of Pediatrics of the Children's Medical Center of SUNY-Health Science Center of Brooklyn. "I think," he said, "you should tell medical students what they need to know about the scientific basis of pediatric nutrition."
The NOTES provide a beginning for understanding
a foundation for learning.
They will help you understand how a problem unfolds and what language should be used to describe the problem, how to develop a preliminary plan of action and obtain more information. Do you need more? Yes, you do. There is an abundant literature in clinical nutrition that is available in the texts cited, other books, and in readily available journals to be found in libraries, and more recently, on the Internet.
The Case Book was developed for pediatric resident education to provide clinical examples of nutrition in practice.

Though Vitamin A was discovered in the early 20th century, the major consequence of dietary deficiency (night blindness) and its cure were recognized in antiquity. Juice from cooked liver was squeezed into the eye and liver was ingested to provide Vitamin A.
Terms
Retinal, retinol, carotenoid, xerosis, and xerophthalmia
Requirements
Vitamin A can be consumed as "all trans" retinol, the active form, or as one of the 50 or more carotenoids that have Vitamin A activity. The prevention of disease can be achieved with 400 ugm of retinol equivalent a day in infancy to 1,000 ugm/day in adults. A retinol equivalent is defined as 1 ug of retinol, 6 ugm of beta carotene or 12 ugm of other carotenoids. Retinol and carotenoids have anti-oxidant effects and are thought to be anti-carcinogenic and anti-atherogenic. These claims, however, remain unproved with potential side effects undetermined. High doses of anti-oxidants may function as super-oxidants. The higher intake under DRI theory has been associated with toxicities including increased fractures in older adults. The RDA for Vitamin A may be reduced in the near future.
Consequences of deficiency
Vitamin A deficiency affects vision in two ways. The first is the light activated isomerization of the 11-cis bond of retinal in rhodopsin in the dark-adapted retina to the all trans form. All trans rhodopsin is unstable and dissociates into all trans retinal and opsin. We sense what follows as "vision." Second, Vitamin A deficiency results in the replacement of mucous-secreting cells by keratin-producing ones throughout the body. In the skin, there is a follicular hyperkeratosis. In the eye, there is a progressive drying known as xerosis.

    Nutrition for Baby

William J. Klish, M.D., is Professor of Pediatrics, Head of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of the Nutrition and Gastroenterology Department at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Dr. Klish has served as chair of the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. klish@yourbabytoday.com . While Dr. Klish cannot respond to each individual inquiry, we will post answers to the most common questions here. Q: The past three or four days my 8-month-old seems uninterested when I try to feed him vegetables. After three or four spoonfuls he turns his head away and refuses to open his mouth. I've tried green and orange veggies. Should I keep trying? Try to disguise them?
A: All infants are suspicious of new foods. They react not only to changes in flavor but also to changes in texture. It's important, however, for mothers to present a wide spectrum of foods to their infants. If your baby rejects a particular food, wait a few days and try it again. Foods should be tried four or five times before giving up on them. Disguising the flavor defeats the purpose of introducing new foods. By being patient, you will do your child a great favor by not only expanding her choices, but by fostering a lifetime enjoyment of foods as well. Past Questions:
